Anyhoo, I picked it up and subsequently couldn't put it down.
The novel opens with Claude, an night shift orderly in a psychiatric institute who is charged with watching the patients on the danger ward (that is the wing for people whose problems went beyond a certain fondness for pills and alcohol.) He develops a curiosity about one patient, the name on her file reads "Blue, S." who was dragged in one night, wrapped in chains, by several men. After she escapes, his curiosity is subsequently rewarded by being fired and almost killed. He is rescued by the object of his interest - Sonja Blue. And thus is Claude introduced into the secret world of the Pretenders - creatures of myth and legend who hide among the human herd. Sonja is herself a vampire with some certain unique qualities, who wanders the world hunting for the monster that created her. Her path brings her back to her own origins and the machinations of a corrupt televangelist.
As I said, I loved this book back in 1992. Collins take on the hidden world of monsters was unique then and felt like a fresh alternative to Anne Rice's vampires. It became equally influential, inspiring elements in other properties like "Vampire:the Masquerade" and the "Underworld" films. It added a gritty punk edge to the vampire scene which was starting to expand beyond it's Rice roots.
A side note: according to other reviews, modern copies of the novel have updated the novel with references to 9-11 and iPhones. I'm not sure that this is necessary. I am reviewing my original dogeared copy from 1992 and my memories of it. So it might be worth it to track down a vintage copy. I'd also recommend the comics adaption that was published by Glenn Danzig's Verotik label. That said though, I like the new cover better than the old. ...more "
