"This is my first direct exposure to Goethe's Faust and while I'm only in Act I, page 30, I already feel fairly comfortable thanks to the extended readings in the Interpretive Notes and other rich supplemental reading provided by the Norton Critical Edition. I struck gold finding this used book at Half Priced Books!" — Nov 23, 2013 01:02AM

"I began reading this at "Psychology of the Transference". Jung describes transference in terms of alchemy. An appropriate parallel as both operate heavily in the psychology of projection. Jung does a great job in receiving alchemy in the process. A must read if you wish to understand Jung's understanding of alchemy. I'm working my way up to Mysterium Coniunctionis." — May 03, 2014 11:32PM

“The sad truth is that man's real life consists of a complex of inexorable opposites—day and night, birth and death, happiness and misery, good and evil. We are not even sure that one will prevail against the other, that good will overcome evil, or joy defeat pain. Life is a battleground. It always has been and always will be; and if it were not so, existence would come to an end.”

“The unrealistic nature of these tales (which narrowminded rationalists object to) is an important device, because it makes obvious that the fairy tales’ concern is not useful information about the external world, but the inner process taking place in an individual.”
