Have You Read?
HNR.HYR The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman
?I've read about a third of it and I'm really enjoying it.
HNR It sounds too sad for me to want to read it.
HYR Rex Rising (Elei's Chronicles, Book 1) by Chrystalla Thoma
HYR Rex Rising (Elei's Chronicles, Book 1) by Chrystalla Thoma
The Light Between Oceans is all about grief, loss and loneliness. It's not for everyone. But it's set at a time when everyone grieved.HNR, but looks interesting.
HYR Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews
? It's a hoot, but it's # 6 (or whatever) in the series...
HNR I read the first four books in the Kate Daniels series. Can't remember why I stopped.
HYR Buried* (Goth Girl Mystery, Book 1) by Linda Joy Singleton
?
*Spinoff series featuring the Thorn character from the Seer series also by Linda Joy Singleton. Since I enjoyed the Seer series, this one is on my TBR list.

HNR, but looks like something I'd like.HYR Finder by Emma Bull
? The main characters sound similar in each book, but this one is set in a shared universe called the Borderlands between the land of Faery & humans, where neither magic or technology work reliably. Mostly it's short stories, but this one of the few novels set there.
No, but I have heard about the Borderlands series. Finally read War for the Oaks also by Emma Bull. Thanks for the recommendation. Considering that it was written in 1987, it was ground breaking. So, I gave it four stars. If it was a new release today, I would have most likely rated it a solid three stars. I will put Finder on my tbr list.
HYR The Goose Girl (The Books of Bayern, Book 1) by Shannon Hale

Have not read, have heard of the movie. May Netflix the movie. The Goose Girl is on my tbr list. Someone else recommended it to me.
HYR The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (Fairyland, Book 1) by Catherynne M. Valente

I don't read many Mysteries or Romance, with capital letters. When I do, it's also science fiction, or fantasy, or time travel, or alternate history, and character- driven...No I haven't, but I have read Kushiel's Dart, all the other books about Phedre and her nephew.
HYR Crank by Ellen Hopkins
? Or any of her other often- banned novels in verse?
Julia wrote: "I don't read many Mysteries or Romance, ... When I do, it's also science fiction, or fantasy, or time travel, or alternate history, and character- driven..."
The In Death series is mystery (always starts with a murder), romance (the relationship between Roark and Eve continues to evolve in each book), futuristic (not enough science to call it scifi, but definitely set in the future), and most assuredly character-driven. I would recommend reading at least Naked in Death, Book 1, and Glory in Death, Book 2, before deciding to not continue with the series.
HNR The Crank series is in my school library (popular and definitely not banned) and last year one of my student read and reported on Crank for his bookshare, but I have not read this book. He also recommend it to the rest of us.
HYR Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, Book 1) by Susan Beth Pfeffer
? A different student read and reported on this book for his bookshare just today. A whole bunch of us wanted to read it when he was done.

You are reading them in the correct order, I already added the whole series to my tbr page here on Goodreads and The Dead and the Gone is the second book.
HNR
HYR This Is Not a Drill* by Beck McDowell
*The student who presented this one gave the best bookshare of the day.

( I take all that back about Life As We Knew It. I'm pretty sure I haven't read it. I confused it with How I Live Now...)This Is Not a Drill sounds amazing, thank you Kathleen's student! HNR, but now want to!
HYR Flight by Sherman Alexie
?
HNR It sounds wonderful. I have added it to my tbr page.
HYR Cloud Atlas* by David Mitchell
I enjoyed the movie, but have not read the book.

HYR Frankenstein* by Mary Shelley
We are currently reading this novel inn our English 10 classes and it remains a classic cautionary tale of science going too far.

HYR War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
?
I don't believe I've ever read a Hercule Poirot novel, so no, HNR.HYR The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov
? It's classic sf mystery, about a robot & human-ish cop working together.
HNR but I really want to start Isaac AsimovHYR Girls In Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood by Ann Brashares
I haven't yet watched "Almost Human," but it seems like they ought to be paying Isaac Asimov's estate for this idea...Nope, I've only read the first book in the series.
HYR A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.
?
Don't get the connection of the angsty soap opera of a vampire, werewolf, and ghost living together on Almost Human and Asimov. And I did watch the first few episodes of Almost Human before I decided that I was wasting my time.
HNR A Canticle for Leibowitz May read it someday. Just have never gotten to it.
HYR Double Helix* by Nancy Werlin
*Goodreads said that based on my reading habits I would like this book.

Kathleen wrote: Don't get the connection of the angsty soap opera of a vampire, werewolf, and ghost living together on "Almost Human" and Asimov. You watched a few episodes of "Being Human," which had/ have both a UK and Canadian versions. If you watched it on BBC it was the UK one; if you watched on SyFy Channel, it's Canadian. If you watched it on the computer, I couldn't tell you. "Almost Human" is a new detective show on Fox, with two cops: one has cybernetic implants, the other is a robot. It sounds to me a lot like The Caves of Steel series.
Yes, I have read Oedipus Rex!

:( Sorry, you are correct. It was Being Human not Almost Human that I watched. Hadn't heard of Almost Human, but it does sound like Asimov's The Caves of Steel based on your description.
Tried reading the first book in the Fairyland series, but never made it through it.
HYR Thirteenth Child (Frontier Magic, Book 1) by Patricia C. Wrede

HYR The Accidental Sorcerer (Rogue Agent, Book 1) by K.E. Mills
I read this one, but couldn't seem to get interested in the second book in the series and never returned to it. I know there are now four books, but don't know if they are worth continuing.
