If you like stories driven by characters you'll love in a world you'll want to return to over and over again, read the Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold, starting with Shards of Honour (the first half of Cordelia's Honor). One of the best contemporary sci-fi series.
If you like military action with humor and politics, read John Scalzi's Old Man's War.
If you want to read a fascinating, science-heavy story of immense scope (and are patient enough to put up with lengthy data dumps), read Seveneves by Neal Stephenson.
If you're interested in stories with fascinating ideas, about consciousness, identity, gender and society, read Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie.
If you like epic fantasy at all, read A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.
If you want to read the most fascinating and original fantasy in decades, read The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin.

I’m always interested in discussing anything book related!

I'm an avid reader of sci-fi and fantasy, having read far too many of both to ever list even a fraction. I'm also an author, but I'll keep my crowing about that to the author's section :-).
I hope, sincerely, that everyone survives the sanity I bring along with me. Sadly, not all people can handle the influence of so much rationality and choose to fall off the face of the Earth in order to escape my influence.

I do like my books with a healthy dose of satire where appropriate, which is why to this day my favorite authors are Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams.
I am currently jousting with the publishing world, having just published my first novel on KDP. I will most likely run a giveaway for some hard copies once I have managed to get createspace to accept my damn cover PDF!
In the mean time I look forward to reading some books with you guys.
Thanks for reading!
Adam

You may find some of Charles De Lint's work falls within your field of interest - sorry, can't remember the titles at present, and he covers quite a range.

Now that's awkward ! I recently read Moonheart, which mixes Celtic and Native American mmythologies - and that is fairly typical of his work, and can stand alone . . . . but it is fairly well on in a sequence of stories set in Tamson House. Now its a long time since I read any of the others in that series and I really can't remember the titles, so . . . try Moonheart, see what you think. Blue the biker is a great character!

I'm going to get the current reads although looks like I need to catch up and read Leviathan Wakes first. I've never read a space opera so I'm intrigued!
Other stuff..... am 46 years old and live in Birmingham UK. By day I'm a Chartered Accountant working for a large international firm. My real passion in life is heavy metal music which I know tends to match fairly regularly with a love of SF and Fantasy

\m/ Neil! Welcome! You're reading one of my favorite books and listening to some iteration of my favorite music! I wish I could get to that side of the pond for some of the metal out there. One day!

I'll try Moonheart first then look up his bibliography
Hey people who likes to read, I'm Ruuda and I like to read and play music and workout, I'm new here in goodreads and I sure likes to read sci-fi fantasy, I would like join this group and want to know what you guys reading, a year ago I start to read and realize how I was getting addicted to read and how much I enjoy it, I really really want to read Robert A Heinleins books, if anyone have a suggestions about what I should read like for a begginers like me, would like to make a new friends and feel free to add me :)

Any F/SF addict in Birmingham area should consider joining the Birmingham SF group http://www.birminghamsfgroup.org.uk/.
It is some years since I have been involved (don't live there any more!) but some of the seriously old members might remember me.

One of the books this group is reading this month, Pawn of Prophecy, is very readable and not too long. It's very classic-style fantasy.
The other monthly book, Caliban's War, is the sequel to Leviathan Wakes which is excellent space opera.
I recommend both of those.
Leviathan wakes it is, cool I think this is gonna be my second sci-fi book that I will read, and yea I have a little more question about leviathan wakes, is the book telling a story in a persons view? I mean like a character or first person telling story? Sorry I'm new to this thing.

Ow is that so, well I kinda more into like "first-person" books, any suggestions about that kind of book?

I read constantly in high school, but for some reason in college I cut back on reading for recreation dramatically and didn't really start again until my 30s.
It helps to have a book club to make reading a more social experience. I looked around for a local SF&F book club with no success, and ended up here instead.

Well, I think you're in the right place now :)
Welcome!

For a school project I am doing research on Blackwell's (a British book retailer) and I need some people who have been there at least once to fill in my questionnaire (who better to turn to than the book community!).
This only takes 2-3 minutes (I swear!) and it would help me out so much :) Would anyone like to fill it in? THANKS!

Just read Faith Hunters latest books on a wood creature written in a homey style with down to earth people. Don't find that much. I usually have been reading about little girls suddenly discovering they have the power of the universe and didn't know it. I miss Bishop and Butler. Why did Bishop stop after having such a successful character?
What is the rule about sharing books?

I joined this group because I am looking for new fantasy books to read, and I am having difficulty finding things that really appeal to me or have what I am looking for. Some of the books and series have reads are:
-The Shannara Books (all of them)
-The Wheel of Time serires
- A Song of Fire and Ice
- The Earth Sea Cycle
- Various Michael Moorcock books
- The Chronicles of Narnia
- The Harry Potter Series
- Necromancer
- The Sword of Truth Series
- Middle Earth Books
- Ender's Game
- Prince of Fools
- Half a King, Half the World and Half a War
- The Dark Elf Trilogy
- The Blade Itself
- Steve Erikson's books
- The Witcher series
I am here looking for some good recommendations on either some high/epic fantasy and swords and sorcery fantasy novels that include other races prominently. The other races don't have to be the traditional ones like elves or dwarfs, but I would like to read something with a lot of world building, magic and epic quests as well. I heard the book The Dwarfs was a good read, but I don't want to waste my time by starting a new book and ending up becoming bored. If any of you have any at all, it would be greatly appreciated!!! I have been disappointed by the books Prince of Fools and Shattered Sea trilogy because they aren't true fantasy novels in my opinion, but simply futuristic post-apocalyptic. I am looking forward to being a part of this group!!!!

I have read almost all the books you mentioned. Another odd one that you may like is Julian May's Many coloured Land series.
David and leigh Eddings, the belgariad series, I think would also suit you but stop after the first series of five books. The second series is ok but having hit upon a winning formula it is really just the first series repeated, with a bit added in and so ultimately disappointing.
Also if you do not mind something aimed at a slightly younger audience. (harry potter ish age group) Alan Gardeners "the Wierdstone of Brisingammen" and the "Moon of Gomrath" are also magical. I am also here to try and find more good books to read. Hope this helps, and if you try any that I have suggested , i hope you like them.
Ray

If you post in the Recommendations and Lost Books folder you'll probably get more suggestions. People are pretty good about helping out on here. Welcome to the group :)

It seems difficult these days to chose a good sci-fi or fantasy series and I have failed often recently to chose wisely. So I thought that I would ask the worthies here for some advice and recommendations.
I like good fantasy books and series, similar to those quoted by Michael (above) and also I love science fiction, from imaginative, sci-fi, (Iain M Banks, Issac Asimov, Dan Simmons etc) to hard sci- fi (Benford, Brin, Bear, Cobley etc) yet much of what I have read recently is aimed at teens or young adults and does not interest me that much. Any recommendations that you wish to send my way would be gratefully appreciated.

I would also suggest the Recommendations and Lost Books folder for you. Just start a thread saying exactly what kind of recommendations you would like and people will happily give suggestions. Some people on here are veritable encyclopedias. You'll get a lot of ideas.

Since you "read in many other genres" and are UK-based I am going to go away from the usual subjects here. Do you read crime/police procedural? With a light approach? Try Stuart Pawson.

Thanks Sarah Anne, I will try there also. thanks again.

Since you "read in many other genres..."
Hi Alan, strangely one of my fall back genres when I can find nothing else is crime/detective novels, in fact that is what I am reading at the moment. A police procedural though it is not light in anyway at all. The Girl in the Ice by Robert Bryndza.
I have also really enjoyed Chris Bookmyre's light hearted approach to the genre and so I shall try Stuart Pawson. I just bought the first of them, "The Picasso Scam", as it is remarkably cheap Thank you for the recommendation.

Dune by Frank Herbert
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
The Gentleman Bastards Series by Scott Lynch
The Secret History by Donna Tart
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Saga the comic-book by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples
I also re-read the King-Killer Chronicles.
I'm excited to get reading with ya'll!

Favourite authors: Jim Butcher, Lois McMaster Bujold, Terry Pratchett.

Hi Tiffany, I like all those authors too. Good choices, IMHO.
Welcome.

I'm an author and undead thing who lives somewhere hot. I read a little of everything, from Dune to A Brief History of Knowledge and I take from all to craft my stories. My interest in Sci-fi/fantasy started around the 3rd grade when I read TLOTR and really took off when out family friends the Hilldebrant brothers gave me a bunch of their calendars. Since then I have grown pretty selective on what I read in those genres.

I joined this group in the hope of connecting with like-minded readers and get some good recommendations.
I'm 40 and from New Brunswick Canada. I started reading fantasy in my teenage years, with the Dragonlance Chronicles from Weis & Hickman. I lost interest a bit in fantasy for a while and regained it about a year ago when I read Elantris by Sanderson.
I got into Sci-Fi later, about 10 years ago and have read many books by Clarke, Robinson and Asimov since then.
I'm a part time fantasy and sci-fi writer, and like many established writer recommend, I read as much as I can to learn from the best in the genre.
I recently completed The Stand by Stephen King, and will most likely continue the Mistborn series by Sanderson next.
Looking forward to connecting.
Steve
