Of those read this recently, I liked Alias Grace by Atwood and If this is a Man by Primo Levi.

Hope I can do more than that this year!

Grada (BoekenTrol) (boekentrol) | 60 comments I crossed off 28 in 2018, which brings my total to 188. I gave good hopes to reach (and pass) 200 this year :-)

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 629 comments I read far more Boxall titles than I thought last year--36. That was almost a third of my overall total, though I didn't really plan it that way. I don't expect that to increase--it would probably be more likely to go down a little, because even though I like discovering things from the list, I don't make it my priority.

Amanda | 191 comments 353. I'm 23 and according to our trusty 1001 book app, I am going to live to be 81 (it's nice to have this assurance). So I think I should be okay.

Annina | 71 comments I have read 140. I would like to hit to the 150 before this year ends. Should be easy project, but I'm having some kind of "not interested" attitude these days.

You're amazingly well-read for your age! Or for any age!

message 1581: by George (last edited Mar 05, 2019 11:42PM) (new)

George (georgejazz) I've read 471, (2006 edition), but I am 62 years old. Averaging about 4 a month for the last year and expect to continue to continue reading around 4 a month for the next year or two. I have a stock pile of over 100 books on the list on my bookshelves that are still to be read. (Nearly all of these books were bought at 'Thrift' shops over the last few years).

The other George here-
1Q84 and Day of the Triffids just finished puts me at 288. 260 of those are from the original 2006 edition of the list. I look forward to passing 300 by end of summer.

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) I did a quick count: At the moment roughly about 240 books (some are part of an omnibus into which more than one book on the list is incorporated and sometimes it is just one title on the list which is split into different books in Dutch).

message 1595: by Nocturnalux (new)

Nocturnalux | 465 comments 146, I think, from the combined list. The last one was The Kreutzer Sonata and I could have done without it, to be honest.

Have you ever found yourself on a long journey, forced to sit next to some creepy fellow who insists on being chatty with you? It's almost precisely like that except the fellow has actually killed his wife and what he is so eager to chat about is deeply ingrained misogyny (with occasional 'it's not the women's fault' but who are we kidding, it is very obviously the women's fault), sex shaming to the point of absurdity and the mantra that 'perfect chastity' is the ideal we should all follow, bonus points for the fact that the second best is to keep women always pregnant and/or nursing. It reads as a rant from a madman and, as such, it is actually weirdly interesting. Unfortunately it comes with an essay that explains that Tolstoy finds the points raised are actually absolutely valid and great ways of living one's life.

No thanks.

Alastair McAlpine | 3 comments I'm at 579. Been at this gig for about 14 years now (I probably read 50 odd books per year, half of which are List books)! Weird to think that I'm not even halfway for the combined lists.

Just finished 'The Making of Americans' by Gertrude Stein, which is undoubtedly the toughest book on the list I've read so far (In Search of Lost Time was a breeze by comparison).

Aluta continua...
