Just checked the site that El posted http://1001beforeyoudie.com/ and just wrote down the ones I've read on a piece of paper, not sure how else to do it! Surprised at some that are there and some that aren't. I've only discovered the existence of the 1001 books yesterday but I like classics; still surprised that I've only read 41 of the books on the list. But almost all of the books I want to read are on the list, so it shouldn't be too hard to get further along. :)

You should check out the spreadsheets, it is a great way t keep up with the list, there is a discussion regarding it on here, check the What list are you using discussion for links.

I just finished my 330th book from the combined list.

Alas, at my age I feel obliged to count ALL the titles I've read, at any age, though I am gradually re-reading a few as I realize how much I have forgotten about them.
I'm also a former English major and teacher, so I've had a real head start on some of you new list enthusiasts.

Does anyone know just how different the lists are? I did my original count (71) from the 2006 list that was linked on the group home page, but I've just had a peek at the 2010 list and now I only get 64.

That's like a 10% change! Have opinions of what "should" be read really changed that much in four years? I'm just curious as to how it's all decided I guess...

Thank you Christine, it does seems to be a more definitive list, I have 50 of them (counting my just finished Tess) as opposed to 42 on the other. I was really happy to see The Yellow Wallpaper there too - I read that in a Lit class in college and it really touched something in me and I have never been able to forget it.

Original List published in 2006.
2008 Edition (I believe it was not released in the US) replaced 282 titles from the 2006 list. It seemed to replace books of over-represented Western authors with more non-Western works.
2010 edition replaced 11 books from the 2008 edition.

I have only checked the 2006 edition - and last september my count was 89. I guess I have to find the lists of the other editions to compare.

I did the same, except i ordered it by author surname. I still update a spreadsheet, although i work from a printed copy of my word document.

I was reviewing the list and it really depends on which version you're using. Is it just me or is there a much larger difference between the 2006 list and the 2008 list than the 2008 and 2010?

It's not just you...there is difference of a couple hundred books or more between 06 and 08...the difference between the 08 and 10 list is 10-15 books I believe. It seems like the 2010 list removals were mostly contemporary books removed to make room for other contemporary books.

I decided to reread all the books I'd read before starting this list, because all but 2 of them were books I'd read in highschool and I seriously don't remember most of what I read, so right now I'm at 1 and 3/4s books on the list. I've got a long road ahead of me, but I'm looking forward to it!

That's a really good idea because even if you had read them then, and remembered, you'll be seeing different things. For example, when I read Little Wommen back when I was 10-11? I wouldn't have known as much as the history I do now. You're still very young now, but your viewpoints and education still have changed. Very ambitious goal!

Good effort, I did the same thing. I only counted about 4 books when i started and they were ones I' read within the last few years.

I discounted anything i read at school. I just finished no# 27.

I'm new to the list and after looking over it I have read 41. I'm working on Wuthering Heights so that will be 42. Doesn't it get confusing with the list changing from year to year. It seems like once you would start making progress they change it on you.
