Book 1: The Book ThiefMarkus Zusak
The Book Thief set in Germany, Europe, was the first book I read for this task and I chose to start with a country that I know some things about. When reading the Book Thief, set during WWII, I learned that in German cities, residents had their basements inspected, and if safe enough, the basement was designated a neighborhood bomb shelter. The residents of a neighborhood usually went to the safety of a neighbor's basement during air raids. I also learned that boys were tested for physical superiority and may have been taken from their parents to attend an academy for special training.

Book 2: True History of the Kelly GangPeter Carey
The True History of the Kelly Gang is set in Australia. I chose this country because it is a land I will probably never see. I was thrown off guard when the narrator mentioned the hot December and the coldness of July. I was reminded that our seasons are opposite.

Book 3: Inés of My SoulIsabel Allende
Ines of My Soul is set in Chile, South America. A couple months ago the group read featured Historical Fiction about South America, and came across this title from the list of suggestions. I am a fan of Isabelle Allende's work. I learned about Ines de Suarez, a Spanish Conquistadora who helped found Santiago Chile. I also learned about the brutality and friction between the Spanish settlers and the native peoples.

The Last Queen by C.W. Gortner Set on the continent of Europe, in Spain and Belgium. I chose this because I knew almost nothing about Spanish royal history. I learned that Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife, had a sister who is the main character of the book.

Melissa, some notes regarding your post:
- Any HF you read for any task eligible for the HF point, regardless of whether the task requires HF. I've added HF points for the eligible tasks - though going forward if they aren't reported, I will not count them. I think this is your first challenge with us so I'm mentioning it.
- Also, please separate the tasks and books a bit more to make it easier to read - the way they're posted now, multiple books are all run together.
-Finally Maude's 100 point task requires explanation, so you'll need to provide that to fulfill her task requirements. Also, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan doesn't meet Maude's page requirements for the 100 point task. The books must be at least 300 pages for that task. Points for this task have not been included in your total since it's not yet complete.
