I chose this title because I enjoy WWII novels, but have not read many set in Asia during that period. Although I'm familiar with aspects of the war in this region, I learned about both the suffering and resistance movements of the Filipino natives during the Japanese occupation of their country.

Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood set on the continent of North America in the country of Canada. I chose this book because I've read no HF set in mid 19th century Canada that I can recall. I was unaware of Canada's discontent with the US just before the Civil War, if the author's portrayal of attitudes is accurate.

Inés of My Soul by Isabel Allende set on the continent of South America in the country of Chile. I chose this book because I had already read most of another book that turned out to not be enough HF (again!) so I looked to see what other people had read for this task and picked this one since I had read and enjoyed Allende before. I did not know about the geography of Chile before reading this book.

This is my first Alison Weir book I have read. I have read other books about this time period. I liked how the author blended fact with fiction. I found I was sympathic to both Jane Grey and Mary Tudor. I usually don't like Mary Tudor. I felt Jane was a victim of circumstance and her parents ambitions and because of this, she lost her life. I found her mother to be unusually strict even for the time period. Jane had too many expectations put on her. She never wanted the responsibility of Queen. It is a sad end to a young girl's life. We will never know what Jane could have truly accomplished.

I read this book for another challenge. I thought it was going to be a retelling of Sleeping Beauty and it is in a way about that. It is a story told about one woman's experiences of the Holocaust in Poland during 1942-1944.
Becca always heard the story of Sleeping Beauty when she was growing up but always thought it was just a story until her grandmother died. On a deathbed promise, Becca finds out the history of her family and what happened to her grandmother before she came to America. The story is heartwarming but has the sinister aspect of World War II underneath. It is worth the read.
