Paige Christy wrote: "The Fallen series by Lauren Kate? Are the unearthly series good? I have been thinking about reading those.."

Fallens terrible lol

Hanna Peach I have had reviewers say that Angelfire is similar to The Mortal Instruments series and that fans of Cassandra Clare also enjoyed it :)
Angelfire (Dark Angel 1) by Hanna Peach
Angelfire

Samantha The Escapist Seconding Ceia's vote for The Demon Trapper's Daughter. Adding a suggestion of my own for A Great and Terrible Beauty aka The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray. Girl in the Steel Corset is indeed quite similar to TID and mostly better, at least at being Steampunk properly since TID still has to be rooted somewhat in reality (a huge mistake on her part in thinking she could write a canon steampunk urban fantasy)

Also White Cat by Holly Black is similar as well as Holly Black's Tithe series. I don't like the first or third too much (but I also don't like TMI very much so don't let that disuade you) but the second book in Tithe, called Valiant, is about characters who had cameo in City of Ashes (when they're on their way to meet the silent brothers or something they see a bald girl and a guy with a lot of facial piercings in central park, these are the protagonists of Valiant)

Another good thing to check out are the compilation books, "Prom Night from Hell" and "Vacations from Hell" because Clare does a lot of stuff on it as well as Holly Black and many other popular YA Urban Fantasy authors.

Sophie Grace wrote: "Also Divergent is supposed to be good"

SUPPOSED to be? OMG, it is AMAZING! Def recommend it - but hurry, they are turning it into a movie. Yay! :)

And no-one can be compared to Cassandra Clare - she is awesome and one-of-a-kind lol. But, all the pepes above have posted good books :)

Lavender Paranormalcy is really enjoyable. It's like MI in the aspect that it has a little bit of everything. Faeries, werewolves, vampires, shape shifters...

Kath Castán Christy wrote: "Are there any books similar to The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices? I have read these and they are GREAT!!! I was just wondering if anyone could refer some for me.. Thanks!!!"

The most like to the mortal instruments is the daughter of smoke and bone. But is more fantastic and predictable in my opinion. But is not than cool is a little Gothic and has romance if is what your looking but it just is THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS!!

Samantha The Escapist Hmm I thought the OP was just looking for Urban Fantasy. If we're suggesting traditional fantasy I'd say that Graceling, Fire and Bitterblue by Kristen Cashore are far and away the best examples of YA Fiction in my opinion. They're quick paced, romantic and compelling if, at times, a little less action-packed. However I think the books are written much better than Clare's books so that should make up for the less action.

The Study series by Maria Snyder is pretty good, at least the first one is one of my favourite books while I found the other two almost dull enough to abandon at times.

More YA Fantasy would be The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima, dynamic, funny, mature and well constructed, I think that this is honestly a higher quality read than Clare's books as well so worth checking out.

Rachel Magenta wrote: "Ooh, there's a book series that began last year by Katy Cross beginning with The Girl in the Steel Corset. It's a steampunk/Victorian book, more like Infernal Devices than Mortal Instruments, but I..."

Ya I was just gonna recommend that! They are similer but both are superb!

message 67: by Lucretia (last edited Jan 30, 2013 05:30PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lucretia I LOVED the Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices! I just read a book called The Watcher, by Lisa Voisin and loved it. It has angels and demons and hellhounds, and past lives. It was epic. I cannot wait for The Clockwork Princess too!

Manasa G. Divergent by Veronica Roth
Legend by Marie Lu
Enclave by Ann Aguirre

It is really annoying - I can't get Enclave on my Kindle because I am in Australia :(

Kaitlyn Divergent <- Divergent is awesome you need to read it

Sophie Definitely Divergent, which is AMAZING.
If you like YA Fantasy, you'd love Throne of Glass, and all it's prequel novella's. ToG series is amazing :)

You are totally right. I actually replied to the wrong post. It was actually post #49 by Jordan that said "I can't believe they are brother and sister" that bugged me. I think it was obvious that it was Clary and Jace.

Sidrah The Violet Eden Series is AMAZING!!!

Oh, okay, sorry. But then again, this is a discussion for City of bones and usually people who have read the book look at it.

Kanika LaRinda wrote: "She wrote another series that is said to be a prequel to Mortal Instruments. I haven't started them yet but the series is called The Infernal Devices."
yes they are one of the good series besides

The Mortal Instruments Boxed Set City of Bones; City of Ashes; City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #1-3) by Cassandra Clare and The Infernal Devices Clockwork Angel; Clockwork Prince; Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices, #1-3) by Cassandra Clare

Alicia Duran Sandra wrote: "Christy wrote: "My bad Bloodlines~"

Bloodlines are those books any good?"

I read the Bloodlines and I think they are almost better than VA

Allie the ruby red trilogy is really good and has time travel to the 18th century with corsets and stuff(:

Mallory I recommend you read The Demon Trappers series by Jana Oliver there are four books: 1) ] The Demon Trapper's Daughter (The Demon Trappers #1) by Jana Oliver 2) Soul Thief (The Demon Trappers #2) by Jana Oliver 3) Forgiven (The Demon Trappers, #3) by Jana Oliver 4) Foretold (The Demon Trappers, #4) by Jana Oliver

Another series that I recommend you read is The Blood of Eden by Julie Kagawa there is will be three books, but only two are out: 1) The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1) by Julie Kagawa 2) The Eternity Cure (Blood of Eden, #2) by Julie Kagawa 3) The Forever Song (Blood of Eden, #3) by Julie Kagawa

I hope this helps. By the way I am currently reading Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead and so far I like it.

Nosa Iredia The Mortal Engines series is supposed to be one of the major influences for the Mortal Instruments series and they're pretty good.

Gretchen If you liked the Mortal Instruments, you'll love the Lux series and the Covenant Series. Check them out!

Emily Jordan wrote: "omg I can't believe they are brother and sister.... anyone who is just as shocked and as mad as me reply. They were soooooo cute together!
AHHHHH I KNOW!!!! but now ive read them all (exept the last one that's not out yet) so I know what happens!!!:)

message 88: by Brenna (new) - added it

Brenna In my opinion, the Mortal Instruments is absolutely the best series ever. If you liked it, you might like the Angelfire series by Courtney Allison Moulton. Another good series is the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. Hope you like them!!

Tracy LaRinda wrote: "She wrote another series that is said to be a prequel to Mortal Instruments. I haven't started them yet but the series is called The Infernal Devices."
Hi, I read all three of the Infernal Devices books. The first one is really boring until about page 175 but keep going! I liked all 3 of them with the third as my favorite. They kind of tell you where everyone in Mortal Instruments came from. :)

Tamara Figueroa Hex Hall is good series.

message 91: by Cody (new)

Cody Hyde Book of the Underground by Cody Hyde. You can only find it on amazon.com because it is self-published. A story about a teenage guy who must escape the world of the Underground and save his hometown from an army of undead. Lots of cool characters, action, twists and dark humor. Strongly recommend.

Kashish Jain ok...here's a list of books that are must read..and i'm pretty sure u'll like them if u liked mortal instruments

harry potter - j k rowling
twilight - stephenie meyer

Teresa Frostbite
Spirit Bound
Shadow Kiss
Blood Promise
Wicked Lovely

I haven't read any of these. I looked this up on my Computer.

Authors Similar to Cassandra Clare is:
Becca Fitzpatrick
Maggie Stiefvater

These too, only looked up.

Megan The Dark Elite - Chloe Neill
Something Witchy This Way Comes - Veronica Blade
Angelfall - Susan Ee
Lux and Covenant - Jennifer L. Armentrout
Darkest Powers - Kelley Armstrong

All of these are my top favorites along with TMI and TID. I also second Vampire Academy, Bloodlines, and Divergent; if you haven't already read them!

Donna You can try Michelle Sagara's "Cast" series though it isn't finished yet, up to book 10 now. Plenty to read...(though books 8 and 9 should have been 1 book.)

message 96: by Theodosia of the Fathomless Hall (last edited Jan 29, 2014 06:20PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Theodosia of the Fathomless Hall Oh, a plethora. The Infernal Devices has elements akin to many classics(esp. A Tale of Two Cities which Cassandra may be intentionally emulating). A book called "Darker Still" and tons of paranormals.
For the steampunk aspects of TID, though...The Steampunk Chronicles...The Mortal Engines...And The Hunchback Assignments! I hope that helps!

message 97: by Emma (new)

Emma The Night Circus is really good.

message 98: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Elfin, Bound, and Existence

I also second Vampire Academy, Something Witchy This Way Comes, and Lux series.

message 99: by Fee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Fee Lune Honestly I think there are no other books as good or any way near Mortal Instruments because each book is perfect in it's own original way that's what I think it can't be compared or resembled to any other if your looking for similarities but I think you'll also find interesting those ones

The Darkest Powers by Kelley Armstrong
Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
Dime Store Magic by the same author
Boys that bite (the vampire coven series) by Mari Mancusi
The Bane Chronicles
A Shadow hunter's Codex
Infernal Devices
Vampire Academy by R. Mead
Night World by L. J. Smith
The Sookie Stackhouse
House of Night books by P.C and Kristin Cast
Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
