Jim | 21813 comments Some translations have Noah build his ark out of cypress :-)
It was a popular timber in the ancient world for shipbuilding and housebuilding

The old guide books are always the best :-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Darn good thing they grow here or the Greeks never would have left the mainland.

message 2104: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments A lot of timber was shipped down from Macedonia in the Classical period. They were the only people in 'Greece' who had timber tall enough to make oars from

message 2105: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You'd think they'd want 'long', not 'tall'.

:D

message 2106: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Why do you think that the Irish ended up using boats made of skins stretched over a frame

message 2107: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Just thought I'd mention it again. Amazon has cut the price of Swords for a Dead Lady. It's now £2.63 from http://www.amazon.co.uk/Swords-Dead-L...

Haven't a clue how long it'll last because they never bothered telling me in the first place

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Went to Sparta and climbed Mystras today, Jim.

I'm knackered.

message 2109: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Right then, can you jump up into the air, kick your bottom with your heels and then land on your feet?

Standard training for Spartan girls.
(Who were expected to by physically fit, have lots of children and do all the organisation and admin that didn't pertain directly to warfare :-) )

message 2110: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just tried. Landed in the pool, thank goodness.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Think I'd make a good despot, though.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments better a despot than a tosspot!

And I'll steal them, add spaceships and use them for Tsarina :-)

message 2119: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Will you be going to Monemvasia?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments How do you steal a mountain?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments If I post a picture of my bacon will you steal that for Tsarina?

message 2122: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Wasn't sure how your plans were going. I guess it's one of those under publicised places

oh and how about this to keep your garden tidy

We've already stolen pictures of yak bacon and snail meat

Jim | 21813 comments Gingerlily - Elephant Philosopher wrote: "How do you steal a mountain?"

Well first you 'borrow' a truck...

message 2128: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Surely Jim already has a tractor?

message 2129: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Yes but nicking it 17 tons at a time is a lot more time consuming than nicking it 40 tons at a time

message 2130: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Surely if you're nicking it 17 tonnes at a time then, at the least, you need another tractor. In which case, why would you nick one.

message 2131: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Because you've already got a tractor...

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Just borrow a Vogon Constructor Fleet

message 2133: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Bit OTT and means having to cope with Vogons :-(

message 2134: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Ah but they have a weakness for poetry.

message 2135: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments My poetry anyway

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Well just one vessel then.

message 2137: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments And strictly no poetry

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Or small jewelled crabs.

message 2139: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments But I did see a Roe deer yesterday evening as I took Sal (our dog) for a walk to see that sheep were OK

message 2140: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I saw a herd of goats with a real, live goat herd yesterday.

Would have made a poignant photo if we'd not blown past at 80kph.

I like having the car as it gives us a huge range of travel, of course but as I was saying to Dave, one does feel removed from things.

There's a blog topic for you, Jim.

How can one experience a culture through the window of an air conditioned vehicle?

message 2141: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments That's a interesting point.
On the other hand I discovered that when I was working in a field on a tractor, wild life ignored me as just another noisy herbivore or something.
The minute I got out of the tractor I was a human being and everything immediately went to ground!

Same thing with the neighbourhood cats - they'll sit and watch the car arrive, but as soon as you get out, they scarper.

I wonder if you'd get the same effect sitting on a horse...

On yer bike, Richard.

message 2145: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Back home, I found I was able to get quite close to deer whilst riding but they'd scarper if I was on foot. Bunnies, too.

Although I remember one magical moment when a deer walked up and ate out of my hand. I was quietly sitting under a silver birch reading at the time, though.

Hey folk, Patti just challenged Richard to a cycle race up Mount Taygetos
Bags I the popcorn

message 2147: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments On yer tractor, Jim.

message 2148: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments If Patti and Richard are on bikes and Jim is on a tractor, doesn't he have an unfair advantage?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments He would have to be handicapped.

message 2150: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments My only handicap is my honesty
