7. Aliens-Darkness Unknown by Alexis Morgan;
9. Dragons-Immortals: The Calling by Jennifer Ashley

How is DK? I was considering buying it - I really like Riley Jensen so I wondered if this would be another winning series for her?

I'm not too far in, so I guess it could better, but I got enticed by other things and can't seem to work up any enthusiasm about picking it up again.

LOL So far I've seen ghost pirates, a wizard, vamps, and werewolves. Wish me luck. This is book 12 for the month of January. Yippee for making some good headway at the beginning of the year!

Well, Prom Night was my last one. I moved the Dresden book to demons (hey, that's what a fallen angel is, right?) because the Prom Night collection featured a good many fae in it. I found it in a "deep discount" bin at a store somewhere, and bought it just for the cover. Some of the stories were better than others. But that's true of any collection.
Well, its the 21st and I have all 9 of my books--plus the oTHER books I've read. Time to "reward" myself and go do some quilting. :o) Got to make a baby quilt, make a wedding quilt for my nephew and his soon to be bride, finish ANOTHER baby quilt and put binding around my new quilt that I made for ME.

You were supposed to come over here and help ME with some quilting. HELLO????????
BTW our baby quilt idea got the approval. But she's stressing because she just found out she has another big fee to pay since the baby is from out of state. Ack. So she was here and we were plotting fundraisers. So hopefully she can get this baby!
Now... wallpaper removal or work on book 12 for January?

I have been following this thread from the beginning. I do not have a lot of paranormal, so I had to pick some up. I looked at the authors a lot of people have been choosing.I am confused about one book (maybe more down the line). Karen Marie Moning's book To Tame a Highland Warrior. What category would that fall under?
This was my plan:
January Challenge
1. Vampires - Angel's Pain by Maggie Shayne
2. Werewolves- Moon Awakening by Lucy Monroe
3. Shifters -
4. Demons-
5. Witches/Wizards- Fistful of Charms by Kim Harrison
6 Fae- To Tame a Highland Warrior by Karen Marie Moning (Read 1/21/09)
7. Aliens- Savor Me Slowly by Gena Showalter
Alien Huntress Novel
8.psychic/time travel - Son of the Morning by Linda Howard. (Read 1/18/09)
9. Dragons/Mythical
Cheryl,
You can put KMM's To tame a HIghland Warrior under Fae.because the Fae plays certain roles in this book. It can also be put under time-travel but you seemed to have one already.
Enjoy the Highlander book. It's a fun read...in fact, the whole series are.

Good point, Nichole. I actually confused it with Hawk's story...this is Grim's right?..LOL..hmm..now I see the confusion..I would still put it under Fae, I guess..and maybe backslash magic?...
Anyway, we are not pretty strict here, Cheryl..so I guess you can chose Fae for it.

3. shifters (book 2)
4. demons (books 4 and 9)

84, Charing Cross Road
Fudge Cupcake Murder
Blueberry Muffin Murder
Lemon Meringue Pie Murder
American History Stories Volume 1
So I've read 14 books this year and am doing well in my goal for a book for each letter of the alphabet! As well as making a dent to my TBR bookcase. It was four double stacked shelves before Christmas. Now I've nearly cleared one row on a shelf! Yay!
And I think I need a break. LOL I'm off to play Sims 2: Castaway on the wii. Though I'll be bad and try to finish up an audiobook I'm working on at the same time. LOL Why not? It is paranormal but heck if I know how to classify it!

I've definitely seen the Fae portrayed in all manner of ways... I just don't happen to have a whole lot of fae books on my shelves, or at least not that I'm aware of. I do need to finish this Bad Ass Faeries though. It's about the only one I can think of specifically on my TBR that's fae oriented.

Thanks for the explanation. I knew you would be able to tell me.
I appreciate everyone bringing me up to speed on this stuff.
I am looking at Seelie/Unseelie, thinking what in the world is that?
I have read I believe it was selkies (man who turns into seal),it was a little weird, but I got through the book. I just never thought I would read of someone turning into a seal. Werewolves are masculine as well as wolves, and predatory cats. Seals almost seem like it would be a feminine shift.
What author writes books about Seelie/Unseelie's ?

Karen Marie Moning- Fever series
LKH- Merry Gentry series
Holly Black- Modern Faerie Tale series YA

Who are the aliens in Lara Adrians series?"
The midnight breed themselves. They are a vampire race descended from a race of aliens that came to earth centuries ago. It's a unique twist on the whole vampire origin story.

Cheryl - Seelie and Unseelie are the two fae courts, generally Seelie is considered the lighter court and Unseelie the darker court.
Cheryl
Seelie/Unseelie refers to the "Courts" of Faery. The Seelie are usually the "good" ones (aka tied to Spring and Summer--or even Daylight) While the Unseelie are the "evil" ones (fall/winter and night) Mab, from old stories was Queen of the Unseelie--one of her nicknames was "Queen of Air and Darkness" Refering to the 2 courts is a "traditional" way of refering to them. That is one of the things that is usually (not always, but usually) followed by writers in the fantasy genre.
There are a LOT of fae out there, traditional and non-traditional. Everything from Elves, to Selkies to Pookha (from the British Isles--its sometime referred to as a demon. A big black horse that lures people into getting on its back for a ride then races off to drown them) brownies, trolls, gremlins, fairies, . . .
And the Selkies are the shapeshifters of the Celts. Usually Scottish. And they were NOT feminine. Clearly you've never seen the damage a bull (male) seal can do if he thinks you are a threat.
Ok--a few books that feature fae--Lord of the Rings (all 3 of the books, plus The Hobbit, which was the first book in the series), Lords and Ladies (Terry Pratchett--definately a "different" view of them) the Merry Gentry books by LKH (Laurel K. Hamilton for the newbies to this genre) Elves are in some of the stories of Christopher Stasheff (his Warlock books) some of Andre Norton's books have Fae in them (yes Oz, you KNOW I have to get a plug in for Andre some how) some of the books by Patricia Wrede, all of the "IT" books (by Edith Nesbit) Jim Butcher has a fairly traditional view of them in his Dresden books (traditionally even the "good" ones are tricky and not to be relied on too heavily) etc, etc, etc. :o) I'm sure you are all getting tired of my posts by now, but there we go

I see what you mean. I think I viewed it more of strange. I will try to remember the title. I thought it was an anthology with three stories. I want to say 2 involved selkies.
Ann, when I think of seals. the "bull" seals are not what comes to mind. Once you mentioned it, I can see that. I know they can be aggressive.

In the anthology Shifter, one of the stories involved Selkies...I think it was Sea Crossing by Virginia Kantra.

I read that book as well, Maybe that is the one I was thinking about. I will have to pull it out and see. I may be wrong about the 2 stories in one book, but I have come across the selkies in a couple of stories.

7 down, 2 to go!

Just wanted to let you know I changed my photo to one my son painted for me. My previous photo of me was rather yellowy. I wanted more color, like most of you have.

I had McCaffrey's series on TBR, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I want my romance, LOL. Selkies are known for seducing after all, it's important. ;) Sounds interesting though.

an idea for something to read is L. Sprague DeCamp's "Enchanter" series. It is fantasy (with plenty of humour, a little love interest and lots of mythology) Sprague isn't read a lot nowadays, but he really is a classic fantasy writer. I had the priviledge of meeting him in person several times (ok, ok, I "carded" him at a convention because I didn't recognize him, and things went from there to a fairly nice friendship between awed fan and master craftsman) I even have the distinction of being the only person to ever give him a purple Pteradactyl. (One of his books is titled Purple Pteradactlys.) He and Fletcher Pratt (his "early" parner) and later his wife Catherine, did some of the best humour (American) fantasy books I've ever read.
Try "Burning Water" by Mercedes Lackey for a "different" mythology. Or if you want a slightly "different" Vamp, read her "Children of the Night" Both books are in her Diana Tregarde series.
You can also do Middle Eastern (djinn are the best known creatures from there) Also Polynesian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Native American. . .I've always been fond of Coyote, but then, I also liked Loki in the Norse mythology and Pan in the Greek. The tricksters tend to be more "fun" than the staid, normal gods/goddesses.
