Hello, Douglas Jones here from Idaho. Husband father of two grade school kids. Like millions of others I'm between jobs right now. When I do work it is in business (export) management. I also have a small book publishing business on the side which keeps me in pocket money. I read all sorts of history, American, European, ancient, Asian, exploration and discovery, technology, ideas, Pacific Northwest, just to name a few. I have a Kindle which has added greatly to my enjoyment and volume of reading.
I have one question? Why must subjects in this discussion group BE IN ALL CAPS?

I'm Mindy from Philadelphia. I have a bachelor's degree in history and work in PR/Communications at a large nonprofit in the area. I've been searching for a local history book club, but most that I can get to tend to read books I really have no interest in. I think this club will be great for me.

I mostly read history and other nonfiction, but also like Stephen King and mystery/thriller books. I also just read "The Help" for another book club I'm in and really enjoyed it; perhaps it was the cultural history feel of the book. I gravitate toward American Civil War and World War II, but work on expanding my horizons to other cultures and time periods. Recently I was on an Alison Weir kick.

I'm currently reading "Southern Storm: Sherman's March to the Sea" by Noah Andre Trudeau. It's really a day-by-day account of the march, so it's very detailed but it's helping me to better understand the affect of the march on all the people involved.

My name is Erin, I'm 23 years old and live in Ontario, Canada. I have my Honours BA in History (of course), and minored in English Language and Literature). I also have a Bachelors of Education. In the spring I hope to join the Cdn Forces and eventually get my Masters Degree in History and teach full time. Quite ambitious, I know, but you gotta have goals, right?

Welcome Jeff, we have had to formulate guidelines because being a public internet site and a public group; there are a certain number of folks who are on goodreads for themselves and self promotion of whatever they are trying to sell us - sometimes even diskettes.(smile)

We are all about the books; but we want folks to know that we do have in place guidelines that help make this a place where civil and respectful conversation can take place and does.

We have quite a few discussions on-going which I think you will enjoy; but we do have to cover with new members what makes the group successful and what does not. Bryan was kind enough to try to help you get off to a good start by adding the links.

I don't think you will find another group with a harder working team of mods.

We are glad to have you and think your interests mesh with ours.

When citing a book, we add the book cover, the author's photo when available and always the author's link. We like to take full advantage of the powerful goodreads software.

I'm Oneira, book enthusiast. I have a degree in Classical studies, Greek, and Latin. I began graduate study but decided to pursue other interests (yes, a grad school drop-out, but you gotta admit that it doesn't sound THAT bad). Had I continued my area of research would have been Hellenic and Near Eastern religions before Alexander the Great, especially borrowings and overlap areas.

Blah, blah, blah. Boring, I know. Obviously I'm really into ancient history, but I do love history in general. Over the past few years I've fallen into historical fiction as well (by the way I love the Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough, though I have only read the first 3 of the series).

On another note completely unrelated to this group, I am a big fan of fantasy, especially with creative uses of existing mythologies, and creation of new mythology systems (can you see the relation to my prior studies here?). Honestly I read all over the board though. I used to only read history books and the past few years I've become a fiction fanatic. Right now I'm hoping to get back into my love of reading history. (perhaps this group will help me along with that?)

Hello everyone,
I currently live on the Central Coast of NSW (Au). A daughter at uni, two cats & caring for aging parents currently keep me busy, but have worked in media more often than not. My degree is in Communications (film,video,media). Hobbies include photography (also is work!), gardening, geneaology, sewing/quilting/fibre art, surfing and running (although have a hairline ankle fracture right now).
Will read anything available but love biographies, history, and anything non-fiction. Three years back decided to fill in the gaps that my schooling & university degree didn't cover, and pursue what used to be called a "gentleman's education", this has turned out to take me places I never knew existed. Have been reading a lot of Russian and Eastern European history of late due to my daughter going to Russia. Australian history is also figuring largely because of my geneaology interests.
