Hi Kate, William & Paul, welcome to the group and I look forward to discussing some great history books with you all.
Welcome, Paul. Hope you enjoy the historical fiction reads and discussions, as well as the other great discussions going on.

Hello Paul, (Paul with the gorilla suit)
We have a guideline for citations so that folks can easily research books and authors mentioned by our members. Additionally, the goodreads software helps populate our entire group site when the citations are done with links which is pretty powerful.
In terms of the books and authors mentioned, you would always add the linkable book cover, author's photo if available and always the author's link. For an author only, just the last two.
I was just posting the above and I can see that you posted a long book review here as well. I will move this to the What are you reading now thread where it is more appropriate.
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
We only have introductions and welcomes on this thread so that we can free it up for people introducing themselves for the first time.
Refer to post 1662 for some added help in navigating our site and some useful links about our guidelines.
Really glad to have you with us.
Bentley
PS = Also, I have been unable to send you a message because you are not receiving messages. If you could repost your intro minus the last sentence which mentioned your other site that would be great. We do not allow any self promotion here because we have had problems with it.
I will invite you as a friend and then you will be able to send me PMs and vice versa if I need to communicate with you about anything regarding the group.

Bryan, Thanks for the welcome. I will (add the add book feature). Not sure yet how to do it but I'll figure it out.
Best!

I'm Hubert and looking forward to discussions of history in this thread. The group looks highly organized so thanks for running this!
Hello Everyone,My name is Meds and I live in New York. I love to read though to be honest, I'm relatively new to history. I'm a mentor for an organization that helps students get into the best high schools and colleges. My mentee just started his junior year at Episcopal in Virginia and I thought it would be fun if I kept up with him on some of his studies. So I picked up Zinn's People's History which he was assigned. I'm about half way through and I'm now also reading 1776 and Kaplan's AP US History review. I actually bought the review for him but I started reading it and it actually is a great review of history. So I kept it. :) I'll get him another copy.
Anyway, I am more interested in history than I thought so club seemed pretty appropriate.
I've generally read a lot of investment books in the past 5 years but I'm also a member of my alumni book club as well.
Look forward to chatting with all of you.
Hi Meds,Good to see you join the group. I am sure you will have a great time discussing great books and great moments in history with the rest of the group.
Below are some links that will help you navigate the History Book Club and what our requirements are. It would be very helpful if you took the time to familiarise yourself with these:
Policies & Practices
(this one is helpful for when you want to add book covers and author's photo's/links)
and:
Orientation & Roadmap
It's a requirement that when mentioning a book or author that you use the 'add book/author' function above the text box as per below to allow other group members to easily research books and authors mentioned by our members. Also the goodreads software helps populate our entire group site when the citations are done with links which is pretty powerful.

Welcome Hubert and Meds! We are glad to have you here and hope you enjoy participating in discussions about great books and moments in history.
Hi, I'm John. I have a life long interest in history, especially military history. I'm currently reading Herwig's The Marne, 1914.
Welcome John,
Please become familiar with our guidelines on citations. We always add the book cover, the author's photo when available and also always the author's link.
So for the book you are reading your citation would look like this: (since there is no author's photo for this one, we have added the bookcover and the author's link)
by Holger H. Herwig
Check out post 1674 that Aussie Rick one of our assisting moderators posted for new member Meds; that post also indicates some links which will help you navigate the History Book Club and show you what our requirements are. It would be very helpful if you took the time to familiarise yourself with these:
In the meantime, enjoy the group and we look forward to your posts.

Brian, welcome and glad you found us. The links pointed out by Bryan will help you get into the swing of things quickly. I like the premise of Mark Kurlansky's works but not a fan of his writing style, at least not the one I read, which was

Hello to all the members. My name is Susan. I'm in Southern Wisconsin. Age is not important :-) I've been an avid reader of history and historical fiction for years and years. I went through the European rulers stage, the Russian history stage as well as American history. This past year I've delved into ancient histories, reading Herodotus and Thucydides. I'm currently reading "The Punic Wars" by Adrian Goldsworthy. Other than reading, I've been a quilter for the past 20 years. I enjoy gardening. I have two large spoiled dogs- a Newfoundland and an Irish Wolfhound - who both enjoy destroying all my gardening efforts. I look forward to participating in this forum!
Regards
We are glad to have you with us Susan.
We do have a guideline about citations which I have explained in message 1680. Bryan one of our assisting moderators also added some helpful information about our group and some links which we hope you will get an opportunity to read.
Please see post 1685 for those helpful links.
In terms of books and authors mentioned we insist on the citations taking advantage of the powerful goodreads software for a variety of reasons which only helps all of our members.
So for the books and authors you have mentioned this is what the citations should look like:
Herodotus
Regarding the above, our group did tackle The Histories so I hope you will take a look at our archival threads.
Thucydides
Adrian Goldsworthy
It sounds like you are a lover of animals as are quite a few folks in the group. I have a German Shorthaired Pointer which I love and the two breeds that you have are wonderful dogs though I am sure hard on your gardening efforts (smile).
We really look forward to reading your posts and having you with us.

Hi Susan,Welcome to the group, I hope you are enjoying Adrian Goldsworthy's book "The Punic Wars". I rate that one of the best books on the subject that I have read recently. I hope to chat with you more about some of your favourite history books in the various threads.
by Adrian Goldsworthy
Hello Susan, welcome, we are glad to have you. Sounds like you have many interests which will likely lead you to many discussion possibilities here. We look forward to your posts.
Great to have you Susan. I personally love citing the book covers not just for the software but the cover art is interesting, too.Anyway, I look forward to your posts!
Thanks Bentley for the instructions. I've not been posting in the groups very long. Your links were very helpful. As a test, this is one of my favorite books on Russian history:Peter the Great: His Life and World
That is pretty good Susan: you have the book cover and the title.
But you do not have the author information. Robert K. Massie
by Robert K. Massie
In the case of the book above, there was a book cover, there was no photo of the author, and of course there is always the author's link which is the author's name in text.
The only time you need to put in the book title is when there is no book cover.
Check out the Mechanics of the Board thread...that should help and you will get this in no time.

Welcome to Brian and Susan. It is always nice to have new people join us.And I'm glad to see another recommendation for Peter the Great. I picked it up somewhat at random in a used book store a few years ago. I'm hoping to finally read it, probably next year though.

Hello my name is LaRon Lewis and I am a student at southwest Minnesota State University I play football and I am happy to join the group
LaRon, welcome to the group, we are glad to have you participating! Bryan's message #1685, above)provides links to our guidelines for how the site operates and the basics on posting books and authors links in your messages when noted. Student, am sure you have no shortage of reading material in front of you at any given time. Hope you enjoy your time with us.
Glad to have you joing us La Ron. Hope you enjoy your time with us and if you need any help, do not hesitate to call on one of us.
Hi there LaRon, welcome to the group and I hope you have a great time here discussing your favourite books and authors.
Welcome, LaRon. Glad to have someone join us who hails from the wonderful state of Minnesota (at least currently). Hope you enjoy the group!
Hi, I'm Michelle. Love history, particularly American Revolutionary and Constitutional History. I work for a road racing body, have kids, and read like mad!
Michelle, welcome to the group! Plenty of books and topics to discuss so insert yourself in any discussion that interests you.
Welcome, Michelle. "Read like mad" and "love history" sound like great recommendations. Hope you enjoy the group!
Hi Michelle, welcome to the group, I'm sure you'll have a great time here discussing your favourite books and authors.
Just a couple of little hints and some links that might help you both - LaRon and Michelle,
Normally, I find that the assisting moderators beat me to it in terms of putting together the package of guidelines etc.; but for some reason you two did not get the message at least from one of us about the links. Sorry I missed it before; but my dog called so I got distracted taking the boy out for his walk.
When you do get a chance, it always makes it easier if you have a chance to take a look at our guidelines and rules:

We have many different members from across the world who have varying ideas on all sorts of things with assorted global views.
I know that both of you should enjoy yourself here.
We hope you take full advantage of your membership and we look forward to reading all of your posts.

I just came across this group today & thought it looked interesting. I'm not much of a non-fiction reader, but I always loved studying history in school. I'm trying to branch out with my reading & am getting more and more excited about getting involved with this group. I probably won't join in too much until next year b/c I already have so many books I'm trying to finish before this year is up. I'll take a look at the "Guidelines" & "Getting Started" pages as well.
Hello Liz, welcome to the group.
You do not have to be a person who only reads non fiction or history books to join.
We have quite a few historical fiction offerings which a lot of folks love, we have a wide variety of current events and topical interest threads including folders on music and art, etc.
I think you will find a lot of books which can ease you into reading some of the non fiction offerings and/or you can jump right in to any of the selections you choose at your leisure. We leave the threads open so by all means, get started on what is coming up and/or what interests you.
Yes, I suggest for you to please take a look at the Guidelines and the Getting Started pages and when mentioning or posting about books and/or authors we try to take advantage of the power of the goodreads software by always adding the book cover, the author's photo if available and always the author's link.
A citation would probably look like this:
by
Doris Kearns Goodwin
Enjoy.
