It is painful to see isn't it? I know my books are loved hard esp as my 2 yr old loves "reading" them but I hate seeing people try to pass on to others books like that. I might have a copy of IT in my storage if you want me to look next time I am up that way I know it's rough but intact(I never share torn books- they stay with me until they are too far gone and then they are recycled to make new books one day I hope)

Emma Glaisher Titus214 wrote: "Dissolution by C.J. Sansom"

I listened to (unabridged) Dissolution on audio and found it utterly fascinating. Very interesting to view Tudor England without Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn as major characters!

message 61: by Emma (new)

Emma Glaisher I'm currently re-reading Dhalgren Dhalgren. To my delight I'm enjoying it as much as first (and second) time round in my teens/20s. Delightfully strange, lots of depths to explore, much beautiful but impenetrable poetic writing.

Tea (prettylives) Martha wrote: "Let me ask y'all a question: is it easy juggling so many books at once or is it easier to read one book at a time?"

depends on the book. I tend to do it if the book I'm reading hits a slow patch and I need a little break before trying again.

Currently I'm reading The High Lord and Just After Sunset

Spending the day finishing up July's BotM Frostbite A Werewolf Tale by David Wellington . And I gotta finish Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury for another group's BotM. Oh, and I am reading Special A (S.A) Vol. 1 by Minami Maki Otomen, Volume 1 by Aya Kanno Love*Com (Lovely*Complex), Volume 1 by Aya Nakahara this month for the Shoujo Manga Book Club. There are two challenges going on in that group right now, so I see a LOT of manga in my future:)

I remember my brother reading the vampire academy series and I had been hesitant to try them since other than the Twilight series he'd never read anything else that wasn't illustrated so I was worried it was like those. And I for one despise the Twilight series. I liked Host but could not get past the third chapter in the others as it was so.....numbing to me.

message 72: by Shayne (new)

Shayne (mitsuneko) | 41 comments Martha wrote: "Well I'm sorry to hear that. Personally i still love the Twilight Series. The Host one of my favorite books though. It's brilliant!"

I enjoyed The Host which made my distaste for Twilight all the stronger. Maybe at my age I am too accustomed to my vampires not being sparkly little "teenagers" Give me Stoker King or Rice among others. The only man who "sparkled" that didn't make me cringe was jareth and he was not a vampire LOL

I finished July's BotM Frostbite A Werewolf Tale by David Wellington . Didn't like it so much. I also read Ouran High School Host Club, Vol. 1 (Ouran High School Host Club, #1) by Bisco Hatori , which I loved. The anime for it is pretty awesome, too.

Now I am working on Replication The Jason Experiment by Jill Williamson as an ARC. I still need to finish it. And I have to read In the Fool's Footsteps by Karen Hoffman Soldier Hill by Phil Rossi and review them, as I recieved them from a couple indie authors here on Goodreads. Oh, and I have to finish The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis too. Lot's to do!

Ariel (cannibalcutie) | 19 comments I just finished Kelley Armstrong's The Darkest Powers trilogy so I'm reading "Lost Voices" by Sarah Porter.

The Trilogy was amazing. I wish there was more to it. <3

Lost Voices is still a little boring so far but I'm only on the first chapter.

Eleanor (elleelizabeth) | 8 comments I'm about half way through reading '50 Shades of Grey' I'm beginning to wish I hadn't started to be perfectly honest. I can see why this book hooked people in that weren't regular 'readers' to to speak, as the writing style is very fluid and easy to read but I'm still very disappointed.... Did anyone else feel this?

It was kinda of so-so for me. I liked it, but I probably won't read it again.

message 86: by Janie (new)

Janie Johnson I feel like she is a fabulous writer, and agree that it was very fluid. (I think Christian was overly wishy washy.) My husband assures me that it gets explained in the next book and we can begin to understand Christian better. I actually read it to see what all the hoopla was about. Really not my type of thing to read, but for those who do like this genre of writing will quite enjoy it.

I think that her writing talent would probably be better exploited in a different genre maybe? But sometimes when Christian is talking my brain turns his voice into Alan Partridge's =P

"Thirteen Reasons Why" made me angry. It's just about a girl blaming others for HER suicide... I understand she's not a real person and still want to shake her dead body till it knocks some sense into her.. >_>

I haven't finished it yet, but I find it really intriguing. I am almost done with it but I see it more as just someone blaming their suicide on other people. You really have to dig deep and see the bigger picture and that is realizing the way someone can treat another person badly without even knowing what they did. But then again that is my opinion. I say give the book a try and develop your own opinion.

message 91: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (cannibalcutie) | 19 comments Yea. I know that's what they meant for the book and yea, I know bullying or whatever sucks because I've dealt with it all my life, but it was her choice to kill herself. I mean, I'm not dead and I've gone through much worse along with having a couple mental illnesses. Honestly, the concept is just a little too childish to me. That's all.

Now, if she was abused or poor or something terrible had happened maybe I would understand but she's just an over dramatic little girl that couldn't handle the tiniest of normal high school problems... she puts up no fight.. she just takes the "easy" way out and kills herself.

Just speaking as a critical reader. Nothing against you if you like it.

http://readwithstyle.blogspot.com/201... This is a great blog about it.

You're right - she does a wonderful job capturing all the different voices - even the two within one character. I really enjoyed it (was my 1st book by her).

Looking forward to reading your review when you finish.

Kerrin | 41 comments The other day I started Once Dead, Twice Shy (Madison Avery, #1) by Kim Harrison
Thought it would be a quickie to read while I'm waiting for a book I really want to read in the post lol So far, I'm about halfway through & I pretty much have a meh kind of oppinion about it. It's okay, but sure won't be going on my favs list.

Lisa (lburgessart) | 32 comments I have just finished re reading The Grimm's Fairytales and my reason was to extract the underlying messages that have been embedded in the text. The imbedded messages range from how to handle tyranny, oppression and survival to the comfort of knowing there is a way to discuss the fight to survive without being punished for it.
