Stuart (asfus) | 136 comments I am reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett

message 3: by Random (last edited May 01, 2012 10:44AM) (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1247 comments I just started Redemption in Indigo this morning. So far I'm really enjoying the tone. Its also in audio and the narrator does a great job.

message 4: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) After I finish The Great Hunt, I'll start Throne of the Crescent Moon.

I'm continuing on with the Honor Harrington series, being about half finished with Ashes of Victory.

Another long road trip to North Texas next week for my daughter's college graduation means I can finish listening to Armageddon's Children.

Check out my current-month bookshelf for anything else I might find time to read.

Candiss (tantara) | 1207 comments I'm half-way through The Wind Through the Keyhole and should be done in a day or two. It's a very enjoyable installment in one of my favorite series! (I am very rarely a series reader, so when I do find one that grabs me, I'm a very loyal fangirl.)

After that, I have these on deck for May:

1. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
2. Desolation Road by Ian McDonald
3. The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald
4. ...and either Some of Your Blood by Theodore Sturgeon or Move Under Ground by Nick Mamatas (If I can get to both, I will, but I want to read at least one of these two for a horror shelf challenge in another group.)

Oh...and I'd also like to get back to (and finish) The Scar, from which I got pitifully derailed a few weeks back. I've already read both of this group's BotM for May, so I'll jump in the discussions. I will probably have to refer back to Embassytown as I go, because it was so very dense, so that will be at least a re-skim, if not a full re-read.

message 6: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Still reading The Complete Sherlock Holmes, Volume I
Surprise Surprise, this is quite readable being it was written so long ago

message 7: by Viv (new)

Viv JM I am still reading Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters trilogy. On the third book now - Child of the Prophecy and loving it!

I think I will start on The Mists of Avalon next, so I have a chance of finishing it before the July discussion ;-)

I'm still working on Doomsday Book, am about 2/3 of the way through.

Candiss, I'm glad to hear that The Wind Through the Keyhole lives up to the rest of the series :) Can't wait to get my hands on it!

message 9: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 136 comments Next to my reading chair:

Throne of the Crescent Moon
Jack of Shadows
Doomsday Book
Little, Big
A Clash of Kings
Fortress of Eagles

I'm almost done with
Vault of the Ages
early Poul Anderson, a short, optimistic, Golden Age novel about the future.

I'm reading Princeps: A Novel in the Imager Portfolio by L.E. Modesitt Jr., the new (well, forthcoming) novel in his Imager Portfolio series. I actually reread the last one, Scholar: A Novel in the Imager Portfolio, as a warm-up, because I'm also due to interview the author later this month - very exciting!

I stayed up too late last night finishing Doomsday Book. Absolutely devastating.

I need something light next...have to check and see what's hanging out in my TBR pile.

message 12: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) | 127 comments New books I've started this month are Coraline on audio and Gil's All Fright Diner on my Kindle. Both are great reads so far.

I finished Princeps: A Novel in the Imager Portfolio by L.E. Modesitt Jr. - great novel. Quaeryt is becoming just as fascinating as Rhenntyl, the main character in the first three Imager Portfolio novels.

Today I'm starting on 2312, the newest novel by Kim Stanley Robinson. Looks very promising!

message 15: by Nick (new)

Nick (doily) | 1010 comments Just did a re-read of The Penultimate Truth by Philip K. Dick. There are sooooo many PKD's I've not yet read, but I just love re-reading him.

message 16: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 298 comments Just finished up The Well of Ascension, and want to finish A Fire Upon the Deep before I go to The Hero of Ages. Almost done with The Native Star on my Nook.
Next up will be Jack of Shadows and on my nook How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe. I meant to get to The Yiddish Policemen's Union, but it isnt looking good right now!

message 17: by Helen (new)

Helen I went straight from Well of Ascension to Hero of Ages to The Alloy of Law.

I'm re-reading some old favorite Mercedes Lackey books at the moment, too busy/stressed for anything new.

message 19: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) | 127 comments I'm reading First Meetings in Ender's Universe. I'll probably be done with it tonight.

message 20: by Christine (new)

Christine | 637 comments I finished reading The Affair, another very satisfying Jack Reacher book; now I'm reading Crystal Dragon as I journey through the Liadren universe. I'm still trying to get my hands on a copy of Agent of Change which I understand is the best starting point for this series

I'm reading The Invisible Ones by Stef Penney, which was a firstreads win. Interesting so far; though I'm not super impressed by the writing, the characters and plot are holding my attention and I'm enjoying the glimpse into Gypsy culture.

message 23: by Pickle (last edited May 22, 2012 10:04AM) (new)

Pickle | 203 comments Just finished the excellent The Midwich Cuckoos and now reading the ginormous The Terror

message 24: by Paul (new)

Paul I finished Slabscape: Reset, which was a suprisingly good blend of science fiction and humour. Very much looking forward to the second part of the series.

At the moment I'm more than half way through Leviathan Wakes. Also reading Viriconium, but between each part I like to read something else in order to have time to digest it.

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 187 comments I've been enjoying Memento Nora, a slim and literate YA dystopia novel. (The spate of these has me going meh, but every once in a while I find one I enjoy.)

I finally finished Round Up the Usual Suspects: The Making of Casablanca--Bogart, Bergman, and World War II. Was hoping for some info about how realistic the depiction of life in Casablanca was, got a capsule history of life in studio-system Hollywood instead. Still pretty interesting.

Slowly working my way through an ARC of Worldsoul. The uncanny library is a theme that seems to be enjoying a minor popularity at the moment.

Lost sleep reading Blackout by Mira Grant as soon as I could. It recaptured the excitement of Feed rather nicely, but I feel slightly unsatisfied somehow. Not because the book was bad, it just ... didn't scratch the particular story-itches I have right now.

And I am going to try to make some time to read Stealing the Elf-King's Roses: The Author's Cut and see how it compares to the original version.

I spent some more time with The Invisible Ones last night, got TOTALLY hooked, and spent some of my prep time at school finishing it this morning (shhhh). The writing was so-so, but the story completely sucked me in. I never think to read mysteries, but whenever I read a good one I love it. I need to remember that I should branch out from spec fic from time to time :)

I just started a re-read of The Sparrow, since I've had the sequel Children of God sitting on my shelf for a long time. Need a refresher of what happened in the first book before I go on, and I LOVED the first book so it's no hardship to read it again!

Those are 2 of the most thought-provoking books I've ever read.

I just finished The Dragon Griaule, a collection of connected short stories and novellas by Lucius Shepard. Brilliant. Then I reread the last 100 or so pages of The Killing Moon by N.K. Jemisin to warm up for my ARC of its sequel, The Shadowed Sun. If it's even half as good as the first book, this will be a must-read series.
