The "I-Must-Not-Buy-Any-More-Books" Thread

I guess a swap is OK... The object is to avoid acquiring new-to-you books, but since you got rid of 3 at the same time, I guess it's fair. :PAnd, can I just say how proud I am of you both for lasting this long! *wipes tear of pride*

Yeah, it is. lol. I'm not swapping or trying to do minimal swapping because I do have a space issue so I need to reduce as much as possible.
MissJessie wrote: "Well, it's pretty bad here. There's a big city library sale next week and I have BOOKED A ROOM so I can partake for two days. Now, I think that's sad, but I am out of control."Wow you didn't just fall off the wagon you jumped off with a gleeful yell.
Mind you I've trying to figure out how I can make a trip to the Hay book festival and I would have to travel 3,000 miles to do so!
I haven't been on here for awhile. Catching up was such a giggle!Honestly I have only bought one book since the beginning of the year and even that was with a token so it cost me nothing.
However I received 7 books in the post last week and 4 the week before and I think my husband is afraid of opening our post box!
I have so many unread books that I own I have decided I must just make more time to read.
I have abdicated responsibility for one evening meal a week and in my free time am just retiring to my room to read instead of servicing everyone with drinks and snacks.
It is fantastic!
i've only bought one book since christmas, trying to finished up my tbr pile, and save some money, i have to say i've been very disiplined but i'm just craving a huge splurge right now, i thikn i'm gonna break soon. Esther, I'm glad im not the only one that can put off buying books for so long, even if you were givne some.
Fiona wrote: "...So only 8 books Esther? I don't know how many I have acquired since the beginning of this year. I'm thinking way over over 30.."That was for only 2 weeks. I received another 4 books this week.
I having only been using bookmooch since December but so far I have received 13 books and another 11 are on their way.
Ouch!
edited to add:
I have just counted up the books I have won from blog competitions etc. Not including e-books I have received 30+ since December and a few more are in the post.
Oh dear. Now I have actually counted I realised its much worse than I thought!
I bought a couple of more books at the library sale. I can't lie it felt good to walk out with them. So now I'm officially done with my book buying until the end of July. :D
Esther, maybe you should create a "Blog-win" shelf or something so that you can visually see how many you've acquired that way! PS. If you're looking to thin the ranks, PM me. ;P
Jackie wrote: "Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence :/"I have faith in you Jackie... I mean, it's only 6 weeks in the height of library sale season. No problem. ;)
LOL! I planned it specifically for this time because there are no nearby library sales until end of July. I just have to avoid the Border coupons in my email and I'm golden. :D
But Borders is a temptation and anytime I walk into a Target I'm tempted to walk by the book section. :( I need to take baby steps. Congratulations, grouchy pants!
I was out yesterday with my dad and HE bought a book, but since it wasn't one that I wanted, it doesn't count!
Fiona wrote: "And anyway, it is healthy to be grumpy."Yeah, grumpy birds always live long, long past their expiration date. :P

I've created a 'Won' shelf and am gradually putting them all on GR.
I also have a bookmoochable shelf in case anyone is interested and of course any I can live without will end up on Bookmooch once I have read them.
Fiona wrote: "I have a shelf for books I got off bookmooch... hmm maybe I should make a shelf for books I have there."For me
mooched = received
bookmoochable = prepared to giveaway
Fiona!!! You walked into the lion's den. Why? You only torment yourself. If you want to remember what a book looks like, wedge one out of your shelves!! I'm very disappointed, but hope that you haven't slipped completely and actually brought a book home with you.
Just found this thread today and I've been on a couple of binges lately: last Wednesday I went into B&N for one book, didn't find it, and walked out with nine others, completely random, ranging from mysteries to biographies of two English queens (and one mistress). Bought two more yesterday. I have 160-some owned, unread books, and it's out of hand. I think I need to join the club..."I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my Owned-To-Read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"
Jennie wrote: "I was down to around 40 a little over a year ago.... It's just so hard to buy just one at a time!"Welcome to the club! I was at around 50 beginning of last year. Now I've reached 120 or somewhere around there.
That's only 2 books. That's not really much of an improvement. Maybe once you get down to 400 without buying new books you feel accomplished. LOL
Fiona I say this all the time but i never stick to it. Once i logged onto the computer its amazon.com or the library to request books. I have quite a few on my shelf that i have not read. I ma an addict
194 is more maneagable than 400! Try breaking it into smaller goals. Say for every 10 books of your own that you read you are allowed 1 new book. This way your piles don't grow so fast, but you still get the satisfaction of getting something new.
Jackie, that's a good goal. I think that is manageable and doable... I might give that one a try myself. :)
Becky wrote: "Jackie, that's a good goal. I think that is manageable and doable... Thanks to the HF challenge I think I maybe able to last without buying.
Fiona wrote: "So I went into Waterstones today because I wanted to see what a book was like.....Saw a millions books I'd never seen before and wanted them all.
Ran upstairs to Costas ripping my hair. :((("
LOL, Fiona! That's like an alcoholic walking into a liquer store! Congratulations on your one whole month of no book buying and I hope you still have some hair left!
Beth wrote: LOL, Fiona! That's like an alcoholic walking into a liquer store! That's what I say about myself all the time.
Ummm... is it okay to buy just two teensy-weensy books when they're part of a series that I absolutely Must! Finish! ?
I'm really impressed by all the non-book-buying going on here. I'm a book-buying addict, sadly. Within days of adding books to my pile of unread books I am dissatisfied with them all and must buy more, newer, fresher books. It is a disease. It's so horrible, in fact, that my husband is threatening to buy me an e-reader. Little does he realize that, although, the piles of books might diminish, the e-reader would be fatal for me.
I had a dream that books on my bookshelf were being erased because I left them there too long. The ink was slowly fading away because I neglected them. How's THAT for motivation to read what you already own?!? I was horrified!
Eliza wrote: "I had a dream that books on my bookshelf were being erased because I left them there too long. The ink was slowly fading away because I neglected them. How's THAT for motivation to read what you ..."What a nightmare!! I'd have stayed up all night reading.
I finished a book this morning before work, was in a bit of a rush to leave and forgot to grab a new one from my pile. I am 4 blocks from Borders, it's on the way to my favorite hole-in-the-wall Arabic food, and lunchtime is coming soon.... Must. Resist!
Hello. My name is Jennie and I am a bookaholic. It has been 3 hours since my last book purchase, and I can't tell you the titles of any of them off the top of my head because I'm such a severe case, I've started having book blackouts. In true junkie fashion, I'm going to blame the crummy weather combined with my cranky colleagues, which resulted in my need to do some "pick-me-up" shopping.
Jennie, I noticed that you stopped calling or texting me when the urge to buy more books gets to be too much to be ignored. Why is that? And how many books did you buy this time?On a side note, I am not imposing a book ban on myself, because that would just be plain foolish, but I do have to mention that I haven't bought any books for about a month now. =)
Fiona, just to make you feel better, I currently own more than 450 books that I bought and have not read yet. There will come a day when both of us will manage to read them all. Hopefully.
Doina, I was too grumpy after the morning I had - I don't think you would have been able to talk me out of it....I bought fewer than ten books this time, at least!
Way to go on your monthlong mini-ban! Has it really been that long since our last trip to Powell's?
I think it'll be a month this Friday, so almost there. And not planning on getting anything else for at least a couple of weeks.
My husband received a serious pay rise this month so I feel it would be cruel not to treat myself. Of course we won't reap the benefits until pay day (9th of the month) so I am trying to restrain myself until then. Oh the Book Depository is such a tempting Mistress!
I've been thinking about popping down to the bookstore after work on my way to dinner with a friend, I have a book in my bag which I'm only a third of the way through too and when I read the title of this thread I thought 'hmm I think I will pop down to Dymocks and grab another book' I can't even feel bad about the compulsion!

I've heard of this....haha! Actually, my library has no selection most of the time. I grab a few here and there, but usually just older things that I missed.
