KarCan - Book Addict | 10 comments I just finished The Sinner I love Gerritsen Tess writing and am impatiently waiting for the next audiobook in the series.

while I am waiting, I have started One Thousand White Women: The Journals Of May Dodd I really love reading about history and this was reccomended to me. Only just started it and it's horrifying, but captivating-the US government with all their deceptive secret deals.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Cinder, Gavin! It seems to have a rather positive feedback, so I may think about getting it to read!

Ahhh, the group read. I've just ordered my from the library, so hopefully it should be with me shortly. I shan't be reading it until the end of May because of other commitments, but I'm looking forward to it.

As for me, I just finished The Bewitching Tale of Stormy Gale which was an atrocious let down after the first book. I didn't hate it, but it didn't make me prance around the room in joy. My review is rather negative, so I wouldn't advise any of you to read it when it comes out, it totally ruins the first novel magic!

And I started about four pages of Ophelia by Lisa Klien, but I'm not sure if I want to read it and find a phony replacement for the Ophelia of my imagination from Shakespeare's Hamlet because I adored Ophelia in Hamlet and I saw her more as a sensual siren, rather than some innocent young girl who lives in a young adult novel. However, I'm determined I'll eventually read it.

Then I decided I was going to start Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward instead and I'm about 100 and something pages in and loving it. I did intend to re-read the first 6 again before this, but my friend is still holding onto the first two, so I gave up and decided to start reading this one instead, since I haven't read it yet. Safe to say, I'm in love.

I really shouldn't be reading these books when I have many more important things to read at the moment, but I couldn't help myself with J.R. Ward!

More important than J.R.Ward!. Is there such a thing?.
Ward is my joint favorite romance author, and the other Judith McNaught was my standalone fav for fifteen years until I discovered J.R.Ward!.

Heather: I thought Catching Fire started a little slow before bursting into awesomeness!. So if you like it now that can only be a good sign.

Currently reading Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon so far it's exactly what you would expect from a book about a Greek love slave, LOL.

Next up for me will be the much praised Divergent by Veronica Roth.

I loved both those books! The only problem I have with the Dark Hunter series is that the further you get in it the more confused you become I have not read the second book of Divergent yet but I cant wait to start it! I just finished City of Lost Souls by Clarissa Clare and Out of Sight Out of Time by Ally Carter both A-mazing! :D

Ahhh, Fantsy Lover! I know exactly what you mean Gavin! I read it sometime last year. I found it interesting enough to keep my attention, but it's pretty much what it says on the tin! Still a really good book though.

Ohhh, Divergent, I have that to read too! Just haven't found the time! :)

Ahhhh, Matt. The Hobbit. I've tried to read that book and failed. I plan to come back to it later this year or maybe next with a new set of eyes, but I just put it down and kind of forgot to read it. Opps.

Me, I'm reading Blaze of Memory by Nalini Singh. I've loved pretty much everyone from book four onwards immensely, and this ones seems to be good so far. Admittedly I forgot who the main character actually was from the previous 6 books because he's only appeared in one and he hasn't reoccured enough for me to remember! HOWEVER, having said that I love getting to know his character and I feel like this story has come at a vital moment to start explaining things.

I'm also reading The Golden Flute by Catherine Lanigan. It's okay I guess, but it seems to far-fetched and I like the characters, but they don't seem to stay consistent for me. There are far too many loop-holes in this story and I think if I was maybe 10 or 11 I may enjoy this book and skip all the loop-holes, but I can't. It's intresting enough for me to keep reading and go along, but not one that's got me highly thrilled!

What am I gonna read next? I haven't quite decided. Need to finish of Ophelia by Lisa Klein. Then maybe Lover Mine by J.R. Ward, The Clan of the Cave Bear or The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa.

So much to read and so little time in which to do it.

That's my opinion as well. I'll definitely read more books in the Dark Hunter series.

Ahhh, How to decide what book to read next?. I always seem to have about ten books that I want to read *next* and even then I still sometimes end up reading something else!.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Divergent, Rose. Reading the description of Out of Sight Out of Time by Ally Carter and it sounds a lot like the recent TV remake of Nikita.

I'm glad to hear you'll read more, I'm about 6 or 7 in now I think, and there are quite a few more to go! I hate the fact that I tend to start 30/40 book series. It takes so long to read them!

Yes! Exactly! I do that every time! Glad I'm not the only person who can't stick to what they say they'll read.

Heather B (heatherbenson) I just finished reading the Hunger Games series. I really liked the first two novels in the series, the second being my favourite. There was a lot of action in all of them which keep the plot moving along well. I was never bored reading them. However, I felt the ending of the last book to be a little rushed and empty. I wasn't impressed with the way she ended the series at all. Did anyone else feel this way? Or was it just me?
The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins

I'm currently reading The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. I'm only about 50 pages in so far, but it seems like it's going to be a good read. A good mystery which I love to read.

I was also disappointed by Mockingjay.
I felt like the first two books had a real sense of hope about them and that Mockingjay definitely ended the series on a bleak note. I also was not impressed by (view spoiler)

I've recently finished Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth and while it was good, it was not as good as The Hunger Games.

Have also just finished Some Girls Bite which was OK. It did however have one of the most pointless love triangles I've read so far. (view spoiler)

Totally agree with you guys over the ending of Mockingjay, I got exactly the same feeling! (view spoiler)

I'm currently reading:

Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #8) by J.R. Ward Lover Mine by J.R. Ward

I'm really liking this book, but I did expect to. I think it's creeping into being one of my favourite of the series, but I'm really getting into the Blay storyline, so it's even more exciting, even though the book is based on John Matthew.

I'm also reading:

The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1) by Jean M. Auel The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel

This book is highly descriptive and interesting, but it really requires you to sit down and read straight so it can be quite heavy going. Adding to the fact it's nearing 600 pages and I'm only about 200 and something through, it feels like I'll never finish. I'm enjoying it, but it's not a light or quick read!!

Finally, I'm also reading.

The Peculiars by Maureen Doyle McQuerry The Peculiars by Maureen Doyle McQuerry

This book is meant to be Steampunk, I'm yet to really see any of that. I really can't be bothered to finish and it's rather dreadful. The characters fall flat, everything is just a little bit drab and boring. Surprisingly it's actually well-written, but for me that's the only merit of the story. Everything seems rather pointless. I don't like not finishing books, so I think I'll try and stick it out and get it read, but who knows...

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying this Olivia. I thought it was great when I read it a few months back. Lover Mine and Lover Avenged are two of the best books in the whole series, I probably only enjoyed Zsadist and Bella's story Lover Awakened more.
Ooh , I definitely agree I think Blay's storyline even overshadows John's.

Is The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1) by Jean M. Auel highly descriptive or overly descriptive. I have thought about reading this for a few years but usually prefer character driven novels.

I give books about 150 pages to catch my attention. After that if I'm not enjoying it I just move onto something else. There is so much good books in the world that I'll never have time to read them all, So I have no problem abandoning the bad one's left, right , and Centre!.

I'll give you an excerpt Gavin.

"For fourteen days of the surgeon's summer spawning, the mouths of the streams and rivers were full. Though the fish that chose the smaller waterways did not reach the size of the giants that churned their way up the great rivers, the surgeon that found their way into the clan's net would be more than enough for them to beach."

This is probably the level of detail for everything really. There isn't a lot of speech because they don't really communicate via speech as such, they have some speech, but I suppose we don't have lots of "he said" "She said" going off. It works well for the novel.

The main character Ayla is certainly strong and she does seem to drive the story. I think the characters are really good! They have a strong sense of who they are and they're really engaging, I'm just finding that because it's highly descriptive that it takes time to visualise and keep up.

I am enjoying the novel, but I suppose I'll have a better idea when I finish it. Hopefully that will be later this week! :)

As for Lover Mine, I do think you're right about Blay's story overshadowing John's. I just cannot put this book down, it's fantastic! I have around 200 pages left and I've only been reading it a couple of days, so I'm very happy! :) I agree about those two, and my favourite of Rhage's story. I just love Rhage.

I've recently finished a couple of classic books
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury by Ray Bradbury and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck by John Steinbeck

While Fahrenheit 451 was thought provoking it was not particularly entertaining.

The Grapes of Wrath was quite good but then again I listened the L.A. Theatre Works production which was a full cast dramatization ( like an abridged audiobook ). The upside to this was that I did not have to suffer the over use of metaphors and large portions of flowery descriptions that most of the classics seem to contain. Also the emotion that the actors brought to some of the scenes really seemed to humanize the plight of the Joad family. It's one thing to to read a distressing scene and quite another to hear the pain conveyed in an actors voice while performing the same scene.

I'll probably try a few more classics soon.

On a far more enjoyable note I've also just finished The Rook by Daniel O'Malley by Daniel O'Malley
I can't recommend it highly enough. Very different from the other urban fantasy books out there.

I'm currently reading
Crave (The Fallen Angels, #2) by J.R. Ward by J.R. Ward
Since J.R.Ward is one of my current favorite authors, I fully expect to enjoy this.

I've read two John Steinbeck books in my time. I read Of Mice and Men while I was at school and hated it. I found it overly descriptive and very depressing!.

Second time round with Steinbeck, I listened to the play of The Grapes of Wrath which I enjoyed. If I ever return to Steinbeck, I'll try to track down a dramatized version of East of Eden.

I've finished The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy which I thought was very good. Plenty of action and romance.

Now I'm reading the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. I've finished the first book Vampire Academy and am just about to finish the second Frostbite. I'm loving this series.

Also halfway through Zombie Fallout by Mark Tufo. Don't quite know what to make of it so far. It's the first 'guy' book I've read in a while. Action laced with plenty of sarcastic humor.

With the new Sinbad TV show just about to start I have decided to listen to the The Arabian Nights: Tales from a Thousand and One Nights. The Lang version rather than the Burton version. Since I got it free!.

Audiobooks are an acquired taste. The narrator can make or break a book. A good narrator elevates the story while a bad one can destroy a good book!.

I was puzzled for a moment there. I had no idea why, out of the blue, Loki had suddenly acquired fangirls. Let's be honest he's no Thor ( Who in turn, is no Achilles ).

A quick Google search fixed that. One click a tons of pics of the guy who plays Loki in the new Avengers movie popped up.

I'll really have to make time to watch the movie version of Thor at some point.

Sounds like we've all been reading some interesting books.

Matt, I'm reading A Game of Thrones at the moment. How are you liking it? I find I can only sit and read large bits otherwise I'll get lost unless I read a lot at once. I'm only about 100 pages in, but I'm really enjoying it. Lots of plots and different characters and the scandals are crazy. I haven't quite read fantasy like this, so I'm really enjoying it.

Gavin, glad to hear you're enjoying the Vampire Academy series. I have heard a lot about it and I got the first book free once on a special offer so I have that in one of my many boxes to read. May have to pull it out soon and read since it's part of a yearly challenege I'm taking part in for Young-Adult books. Do you think once you finish on you need to get on with the next?

And did you get around to reading Crave, Gavin?

Lisbeth, Loki sounds very interesting. I LOVE the Thor film, although I'm a totally dedicated Thor and Chris Hemsworth lover I can appreciate Loki, haha. Just added Loki to my wishlist, I love all legends of old and historical mythology books. They excite me a lot!

Samantha, Enchanted is on my wishlist too, so I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Ohhhhh, I'm so excited I bought two new books. Haven't bought any in AGES since I've had no money and my mother told me off pretty badly for buying more books. She told me it was wasting my money and I needed to read books I owned. It wasn't fun. So I bought Everneath and I'm really excited to read it as this months BoftM. I like that little acronym Gavin! It looks to be a fantastic book, and I've heard lots of good things, so it better be worth the money and the fact it's of larger and awkwarder size that my other books. haha.

Eragon is a book I also have to read, so I'll be interested to hear what you think.

As you can probably gather, I have a lot to read....

What I've recently finished:

Killing Me Softly by Nicci French
I heard some interesting reviews on this when I picked it up from my local library. I found the book enjoyable, but the main character began to grate on my nerves about halfway through. It certainly made my heart beat a little faster and I was really into the book. A good thriller, but not the best. I'd suggest taking a look.

Lord of Misrule by Rachel Caine I read the first four books in about a month and loved them, but then I just set these books aside last summer until now. Why haven't I picked up this book sooner?! I totally understand why my frien moaned at me to read these because they are fantastic vampire books.

Wanted: Dead or Undead by Angela Scott
I was asked by the author to review this book and I fell in love. The whole storyline of zombies in the Wild West seemed a little odd and I don't usually go for Western fiction, but the female lead was strong and stubborn and full of secrets and real gusto. The male was swoon worthy. I really loved this book and I am thrilled and happy to own a copy!

What am I currently reading?

Graceling by Kristin Cashore This is a monthly group read for a book club I'm part of on Goodreads and I've had it on my shelf to read for months. Just started this and it seems very interesting. I have high hopes for this young-adult fantasy because I've heard some very positive reviews.

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin As I've already said I'm reading this and it's heavy going, but very good. I should have picked this book up before now, but I think I have more time to dedicate to it now which is always good!

The Rook by Daniel O'Malley Should have read this last month, but really did not have the time when I finally got around. Such a shame because it's a fabulous book.

When Darkness Hungers by J.K. Beck Never read a book from this eeries before, but I certainly think I may go out and get the first because this one I'm enjoying immensley.

Wow, that was one hell of a long message, haha.

Olivia A Game of Thrones is full of great twists and turns. It's also full of great characters. It's a real favorite of mine.

I'm loving the Vampire Academy series. I read the first two back to back but I think each book has a satisfactory conclusion. I've put the series on pause so I can read Eragon.

After a slightly slow start I loved Crave. Ward never disappoints. I think Crave is the darkest book she has wrote so far ( that I've read ).

Olivia, I'm glad you enjoyed Thor. I have the DVD around somewhere.

Yep I stole that acronym from someone else.

I look forward to your thoughts on Graceling. I've heard great things about it plus it's another one I already own.

I've been meaning to read the Morganville Vampire series for a while. Is it good?.

message 93: by [deleted user] (new)

Certainly is. I was having a discussion with my friend over Jon Snow or Tyrion Lannister and she favours Tyrion whilst I favour Jon Snow. She told me he had a lack of depth to his character. I disagree, but I'm very much enjoying the great characters of A Game of Thrones.

That's good to hear since I only own the first one. haha. I find I read far too many series. I will look forward to your thoughts on Eragon because I have heard many great things about the series but it's something I've never been bothered with. However Christopher Paolini's parents published his books, I heard, so some people resent him for this.

Ahh, I've read Covet, but I probably need to read it again before I read Crave, since it's a little fuzzy in my brain and I just enjoy her books.

You must watch it, it's a wonderful film. Although I sit and drool for most of it, quite shamefully.

That's cool, since I'll steal it from you.

Yes, it looks to have a promising start and I should finish it shortly since it's a young-adult novel and I tend to get through those quite quickly compared to adult novel which tend to be more intense and longer reads.

Morganville Vampire series is wonderful! It's very unique and I feel like we have some really gritty vampires in the story with lots of different plot twists and turns. I can safely say, I am never disappointed and never receieve something I expect to see. The ending was such a crazy ending in the lastest novel that I NEVER would have expected, which makes them so great. I think they have some really great characters too. The four friends are certainly a fantastic starting point of Michael, Eve, Shane and Claire. It works wonderfully and I'd suggest starting with those books soon! :)

Tyrion or John?. I like both but prefer Tyrion. If memory serves I do think I liked John better for most of the first book. There is a ton of wonderful characters you have not even met yet.

Christopher Paolini's parents published his books so people resent him?. Lol, I work for/with my family so I have no problem with nepotism. So far so good with Eragon.

I'm more hyped for Morganville Vampire series now. Truthfully I was close to reading it but ended up choosing Vampire Academy instead.

I've finished The Arabian Nights: Tales from a Thousand and One Nights. Of the four tales included in my version, Sinbad's tale turned out to be the least interesting. I would be disappointed but the other tales were quite good. Still looking forward to TV Sinbad.

John!

Yes, I'll look forward to reading more.

Yup! They do... or so I've heard some people say. haha. I don't have a problem with it either really. Glad to hear that.

Ahhh, that's a shame, but do pick it up shortly.

Jon! my bad. Stupid audiobooks, they never help with the spellings of names. That said, I should have got that one right.

I've finished Eragon. It was quite good. If I had not known beforehand how young Christopher Paolini was when he wrote it, I doubt I would have realized it. It seemed as well written as anything else I've read latley.

I'm currently reading Everneath and Eldest and A Kiss at Midnight. I do fear Goodreads has been a bad influence on me. What with everybody reading multiple books at the same time!.

Hope you are still enjoying A Game of Thrones.

Matt Hageman I just finished A Game of Thrones and loved it! Now strait onto the 2nd book.

Yeah. My friend called him John too and she read the books. haha.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! It's somewhere amongst my many boxes of books to read! Will you continue to read the rest of the series?

Just three, Gavin? haha!

Goodreads does have a bad influence! However to say I'm reading '5' books, I'm not actually reading one of them and two are when I feel into reading, so really I count it as two. Although Game of Thrones is currently on hold until I finish the other lots of books I'm reading.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Game of Thrones, Matt! I probably need to pick it up again. I just find that I can only read it when I can get about 100-200 pages read at a time where I can absorb everything! haha.

As for me, I'm currently reading as top priority.

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen

The first few pages were a bombardment of dozens of character names that thoroughly confused me, but I hope to get into it!.

I've just finished reading Ash by Malinda Lo and Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry.

Overall I enjoyed Ash and found it a quick, easy read and one I'd recommened, but nothing amazing. Whilst Pushing the Limits, I actually adored! Stayed up late to finish it and everything! Haven't done that in a while. Whilst I wouldn't call it perfect literature, it thrilled me enough to give it 5 stars.

Yep I'm reading the second Eldest now.

As someone who has spent their whole life reading only one book at a time, I consider three as going a bit crazy.

I got Sense and Sensibility free last month, so I'll be trying Jane Austen at some point myself.

As well as Eldest by Christopher Paolini, I'm also reading Ash by Malinda Lo and Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard

For what it's worth I did enjoy both Everneath (Everneath, #1) by Brodi Ashton and A Kiss at Midnight (Fairy Tales, #1) by Eloisa James .
