Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Oh, phew.

D.G. I wish we did too but at least we can note in our review if we want to 5 star something but feel it's more of a 4.5.

message 4652: by Leea (new)

Leea There's a few thing I wish we could do on GR. 1/2 stars, note that more than one person recommend a book to you and consistant notifications.

Like earlier, I wrote a review and put some quotes in bold (I also double checked to make sure my html code was right - it was) and when I saved the review they were italic. GR is just all over the place these days.

message 4653: by D.G. (new)

D.G. You were def. not judgmental, Stacia.

Yup, GR has been terrible in the last half year. You really wonder what's going on behind the scenes.

message 4654: by Kay (last edited Sep 06, 2012 03:02PM) (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I think GR has grown a lot in users since last year. Especially since they added that FB newsfeed. They also added a lot of job openings this week (I check constantly b/c I hope one day there will be something that will fit me since they have an office in San Francisco). So, I'm assuming they need more people to keep up with the user demands...hence why they have been having so many errors and problems.

message 4655: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Yes, but that's poor planning on Management's part. I can understand a problem that lasts a month but six?

message 4656: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments I think I rate pretty fairly on the books that I've read and it does make you wonder if that particular book is really good or not based on such high ratings by others. It's really all subjective.

I'm starting a new genre, steampunk, with The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1) by Meljean Brook .

message 4657: by Leea (new)

Leea I read that, Courtney and liked it. Hope you enjoy it :) I haven't read any of the other books in the series so if you read the second, let me know and I might join you.

Let me know how you like the Iron Seas. I have had my eye on it for a while.

message 4659: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments Leea - Thanks! It's pretty confusing so far but I think I'm getting the hang of it! And we'll see if I continue the series. It seems to be a pretty rare thing for me ;)

Marcella - Will do!

message 4660: by Domino (aka Meme) (new)

Domino (aka Meme) (bryghtstarr) | 231 comments i've started two other books this week.
Wrangled and Tangled (Blacktop Cowboys, #3) by Lorelei James and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling . both these books are really good. i'm still reading A Game of Thrones and enjoying it too. wish i didn't have class and work. hehe

message 4661: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments Domino - What class are you taking? And glad you're reading Harry Potter. I love the first book!

message 4662: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I don't know about all of you, but I find it hard to take much away from a rating because I know there are people who love a book but will never give it more than 3.5stars. Or seem like they hate it but still rated it high.

There are a lot of reasons ratings are important (hahaha wry laugh) - but as a reader but I find a review helps me the most. I can ignore the grade and hear what the person is trying to say. Then I can decide if it fits with my worldview or not.

Do you have that experience as well?

message 4663: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments When I judge whether or not I am going to read a book I do look at the ratings of others who have read said book and average it out to see if it would be worth my while. I also skim through the reviews (I don't want to accidentally read any spoilers).

message 4664: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments When I look at potential books, I usually skim, too, but tend to read the lower ratings (3 stars and lower) because if they point out something I don't personally like in a book, I can check that book off immediately.

Courtney, i'm in my last two classes for nursing school. one is capstone where i have to do 120hrs of clinical and the other is core concepts which helps prepare you for the certification exam. i'm just so glad i'll be done in mid november.
Harry Potter has so much more than i expected. it's definitely more than a wizardry novel. the kids go through so much. and it's funny =D

message 4666: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments Domino - How are the clinicals? I'm curious to know because I should be starting by this Spring if I get accepted!

And I agree about Harry Potter. It encompasses many themes that you don't normally see in a Young Adult novel.

Because I'm an emotional reviewer/starer I often go back and downrate or uprate. It's funny because in my review I'll say a book has 4 stars when now it has three, or three stars when now it has 4.

glad to hear u've applied to nursing school Courtney. i def hope u get that acceptance letter =D
clinicals where a bit tough in the beginning. u get some training before hand, but ur still a bit scared cause u've never had the opportunity to be behind the scenes and in the loop of someones healthcare. u get more comfortable as u go and gain more knowledge about the body systems and signs and symptoms. u'll find that once u've gotten to know some signs and symptoms and start pointed out people who have specific illnesses. it just comes naturally. not that ur being rude, u just recognize it. i did that my first semester and second all the time when i went to stores. i think u'll enjoy it especially when u find the area u want to work in.
do u have an idea of what area u like now? i wanted pediatrics at first and now i'm all for obstetrics. also cardiac care is pretty neat too.
what school did u apply to?

message 4670: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I didn't get any of these noticifications! 37 new posts! FWIW, my friends that rated Slammed high are not consts 4-5 star raters. :)

I hope you are enjoying it Leea!

message 4671: by Leea (last edited Sep 07, 2012 03:22PM) (new)

Leea I'm a few chapters in and am enjoying it. I like the characters so i'm hopeful. It's been a crazy day, so I haven't read anything yet (that always puts me in a bad mood) but I hope to read after dinner.

Total preschool drama at my sons preschool. School start monday and they are just now combining two class and maybe moving teachers. I'm so pissed and now I can't get him into another program because they're all full. I just talked with the director and explained my frustration but there's not much she can do. I basically build our schedule around this class (We registered in April) and now I can't change it. Just frustrated.

message 4672: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I'm reading Fury (New Species, #1) by Laurann Dohner - not so good - and listening to Rain Storm (John Rain, #3) by Barry Eisler which is going well so far ( I really love this narrator.)

Well that sucks. The book cover is nice though.

Regina (reginar) DNF DG! LOL, I love those acronyms. ;)

I just finished Ashen Winter (Ashfall, #2) by Mike Mullin and it is BETTER than the first! If you ladies got this from NG, I recommend starting it now!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Finished Seduced in the Dark (The Dark Duet, #2) by C.J. Roberts and it was predictably dark (taboo erotica, haha) and it made me quite uncomfortable (and angry) in parts but it was very readable and interesting.

Will probably shift gears in the opposite direction and go for something light and fluffy and start My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris tomorrow.

I should have dnfed it! It was really bad.

I'm glad to hear Ashen Winter is good. I'll put it in my TBR to read this month.

message 4677: by Leea (new)

Leea Finished Slammed (Slammed, #1) by Colleen Hoover and it was very good, quick read, complex characters and i'm always drawn to the realistic fiction genre. I'll admit, I didn't really know what this book was about the synopsis is vague, but I was very pleasently surprised.

Now, i'm going to read the second book, Point of Retreat (Slammed, #2) by Colleen Hoover which I hear is written in Will's voice.

message 4678: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I think I realized what my problem is right now. I have a lot going on and am really stressed (man non stop since June). I can't sleep lately as I am so stressed, anyway I just finished a book I loved. I think (and this sounds dumb) I can only do 4-5 star books right now. If it is mediocre or just a 3/3.5 star book I don't have the patience to push through. So I am just going to give myself to dnf everything that is not catching my eye.

I just started O Pioneers! by Willa Cather I am surprised at how modern it reads, it is a really great book. I read My Ántonia by Willa Cather years ago and really loved it.

message 4679: by Leea (new)

Leea I'm so sorry that you're so stressed. Those times are the worst. I hope that by finding a great book you can escape at least for a little while.

message 4680: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I'm sorry Regina. Stress sucks. That's a good idea about reading only 4-5 star books.

I finished The Out of Office Girl by Nicola Doherty and it was ok. Now, I'm reading Somebody To Love by Kristan Higgins .

message 4681: by Leea (new)

Leea I started On Dublin Street by Samantha Young mainly because it has a Scottish man in it. I wont lie, now that i'm almost half way through it, I find parts so boring and others like the sex scenes are hot but also forced or lacking intimacy. This is another book that's gotten some good reviews from friends so maybe it will pick up. RIght now it's a 2 star book...

Anyone else read it? Thoughts?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I have to read it on Monday for a group I'm in. I was just discussing the book with a friend and we both were talking about how books that are hyped scare us the most because often, they don't seem to live up to the hype.

I'll keep an open mind though. I've read 2 other books by Young and they were both okay. Not great, but decent enough.

message 4683: by Leea (new)

Leea Oh, I didn't mean to ruin that for you. haha! I'm hoping something will click and it will get a lot better. It's not terrible, but just okay so far. It's a quick read.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) You didn't ruin anything. I am very wary of books that get a lot of hype. After feeling like Crash (Crash, #1) by Nicole Williams didn't come close to living up to the hype, I'm sort of scared (on my own) to try books that people get all squealy over.

message 4685: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Awww, Regina! Sorry that you can't sleep and are still so stressed out. Hopefully things get better soon!

That's a good approach with the books too...I think I should do like you. I don't seem to be in the mood for anything lately.

Anyhow Fury (New Species, #1) by Laurann Dohner sucked! Totally not recommended. So I started Falcon's Fire (Fairfax Family, #1) by Patricia Ryan , a medieval romance a friend recommended. So far so good. The heroine is sort of nasty but at least she has some reasons for it.

message 4686: by Kiana (last edited Sep 09, 2012 03:58AM) (new)

Kiana I'm reading the second and the last book of the edrisi's house novel by ghazaleh alizadeh. An Iranian writer. It is a great book with beautiful story line and strong characters. It's about an old rich family, a revolution turns to a disaster, connections between people and inside of every character's soul. i don't know if it has a translation in English or not but if you found it....this book is a worthy book to be read:)

message 4687: by Leea (new)

Leea Kiana, i'll have to look into that series. Thanks!

I finished On Dublin Street by Samantha Young It was just okay. Nothing really stood out to me and in fact I was really bothered by both the main characters being so rich. Come on!

Now, i'm starting Point of Retreat (Slammed, #2) by Colleen Hoover and the galley is kind of messed up and it's bothering me because the spacing is all wrong and it's distracting.

message 4688: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished Rhett Butler's People by Donald McCaig by Donald McCaig earlier today. Basically the storyline of the novel is Gone With the Wind from Rhett Butler's point of view and it was a bit of a disappointment really. Gone With the Wind is one of my favourite novels and I found all the characters in RBP, even the major ones of Rhett and Scarlett, are out of character. There is also a lot of errors that contradict the original, characters dying when they lived in GWTW and vice versa, Melanie knowing about Scarlet being in love with her husband, etc. As a standalone historical fiction novel, Rhett Butler's People is okay but as a complement to Gone With the Wind it sucks!

Now I'm about to start The Midwife's Confession by Diane Chamberlain by Diane Chamberlain.

message 4689: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments I finished reading The Gamble (Colorado Mountain, #1) by Kristen Ashley and now onto Sweet Dreams (Colorado Mountain, #2) by Kristen Ashley .

The first one was great. Thanks again for the great recommendation Leea. I am a little disappointed that the second one isn't about the same characters. I am usually not a fan of this kind of series.

I will say even though the previous characters aren't in this one it isn't half bad. Still want the previous characters though.

message 4690: by Leea (new)

Leea Sweet dreams was my favorite of the series until I read Breathe last week - AMAZING! Enjoy!

I'm about 70% into Point of Retreat (Slammed, #2) by Colleen Hoover . This is tooth achingly sweet (in a good way). All the poetry is beautiful.

message 4691: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments Really Leea...you were not disappointed the characters from the first book weren't in the second book?

message 4692: by Leea (new)

Leea No, I wasn't disappointed after meeting Tate, but I will say I think KA is going back to Gnaw Bone in the 5th book. Also it's not the last time you'll see Max and Nina - that's all i'm saying ;)

message 4693: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments I want a book of Jeff and Mindy. I so wanted to read their story. I felt robbed in the Epilogue of the first book.

Leea I can't remember them - Yikes! Sorry. haha! Looks like I need to reread Max and Nina's book.

Who the eff are these people? I want a book on Brody, Max's best friend and Jeff and Mindy. I am very disappointed with this news.

message 4699: by Leea (new)

Leea Sorry. You'll meet them & love them.

message 4700: by Leea (new)

Leea I'm starting The Unidentified Redhead (Redhead, #1) by Alice Clayton because I need funny and sexy!

Finished Slammed and Point of Retreat - they were good. Emotional and funny but very sweet.

Happy Monday!
