I think after your post I'm moving it to my 'maybe' shelf. Lack of character development (in any world) is the kiss of death for me.

D.G. This business of the covers is freaking annoying. Why did GR have to change that? It was working well!!

message 753: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I DNFed it at about 20% though. Kay would you agree or am I remembering in a too bitchy way?

message 754: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Besides The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams , I'm also listening to Red Seas Under Red Skies (Gentleman Bastard, #2) by Scott Lynch , which is going great so far. I love the narration. I can't say I'm in lust because his voice is a bit gravely for my taste but I love the way he pronounces some words and the panache he gives the characters. I even love the way he says the numbers before each section!

message 755: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I forgot - -you listened and occasionally read parts of the first one, right? I am trying to decide if I want to buy the audio or not. Crazy enough none of my libraries have the CD or overdrive download. My library belongs to a huge network and I had requested the CD of Lies but the library that had it dropped out of the network! That cover of Red Seas is really eye catching.

So you are listening to The Shadow Reader?

DG, what do you mean about the covers?

message 756: by Mimi (new)

Mimi Smith | 94 comments DG, agree to disagree it is.

And Mckenzie (view spoiler)

Mimi Smith | 94 comments Ooh, and I loved Locke Lamora. He's awesome. But I kept waiting for the third part to come out till I read the second, and this has been going on for years now. Hope October remains the final date.

Mimi - Mr. Lynch has been battling serious depression and that's why it's taken a while for the third book to come out. I read recently that there are rumors he already submitted the manuscript of "Republic of Thieves" and that it will possibly come out this year but again, those are rumors and there's nothing confirmed.

D.G. Regina wrote: "DG, what do you mean about the covers? "

If you notice, when I replied to your message (753), a completely different cover came up instead of the book we were discussing. That's happened since GR 'disconnected' the authors from the covers (if you hover over a cover now, it won't have the author.)

Oh, I didn't know about that. i just noticed the date has been moved like 3 or 4 times. GR still shows October, 2012 as the release date but that doesn't have to be final *sigh*
Thanks for the info.

I know. :( Hopefully he's on his feet and he can start writing again - books #1 and #2 were published in back to back years so maybe he can write quicker once he's feeling better.

Also the series is not a trilogy but at least 5 books (I understand that's what he's contracted).

After I posted I saw the posts in the SOS group Pre Orders 2012 discussion. So silly, that is not an improvement at all.

Regina (reginar) Leea, did you get your computer working? If not, I have a solution for you. If you email a book to your self and you have a Stanza ereader (free app) --- it will automatically pick it up and you can read it on your phone. Without transferring or anything. It may help keep you going ....

So when should we read Harvest Moon (Virgin River, #15) by Robyn Carr

ETA: Harvest Moon looks to be about Kelly and Lief -- that is no surprise though.

I mostly listened to it. I just read along at the beginning a bit because I got lost with the way the story is told (goes back and forth in time.) But once I got used to that, I listened to the audio exclusively. It's really great.

message 766: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments Gosh, I need to finish Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5) by Ilona Andrews before I can start The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams ! Almost done!

And Regina, can't wait to see what you think about The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1) by Jean M. Auel . I read that pretty long ago when I was in high school and it wasn't an assigned reading! I just picked it up. Very long and detailed....but a pretty decent read, I think.

I have Harvest Moon loaded on my Nook, along with #16 (Bring me home for Christmas).

I didn't have much of a chance to read yesterday untill around 9pm and then I was falling asleep and drinking wine (not a good combo :) So, I need to finish Me Before You by Jojo Moyes and Start The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams but after that I can start Harvest Moond? maybe Monday?

I do have a ton of book already on my Nook. Plus I had all my docs put onto an external hard drive so if I really need one I can pull it from there.

Kay, it wasn't my favorite unfortunately. It keeps you reading, so it wasn't that hard to get through, but the characters and plot lacked depth. There just wasn't much story there. I kept wishing for better dialogue too, there could have been some wonderfully romantic scenes and conversations but it just didn't happen. :( I read it because of the movie, going to see it on Friday.

Regina (reginar) Courtney it is long, but I am liking Clan of the Cave Bear so far. But I am only at the beginning.

Leea, Monday or later sounds good. I am not sure if I will be done with Clan of the Cave Bear by then.

message 772: by D.G. (last edited Apr 19, 2012 12:34PM) (new)

D.G. I'm really enjoying The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams . The funny thing was that wasn't the book that my other friends recommended!!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I'm liking Shadow Reader so far because it's entertaining but I'm also sort of pissed off. It's almost identical to Mead's Dark Swan in parts. So far almost everything about the world feels like Dark Swan, from the portals, to the use of anchors, to the fey shunning technology in favor of magic (it hampers them), to the medieval dress, etc. etc. The name Kyol even reminds me of Kiyo.

If it ends up being similar it will get a bad rating from me, no matter how entertaining the story is. I will not reward blatant copying. I couldn't do it when Armentrout copied Mead, so it would be a double standard if I rewarded it for this author.

message 774: by Mimi (new)

Mimi Smith | 94 comments Um, I haven't read Dark Swan, so I can't say... I probably won't either.

message 775: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) You are right! Even down to the fact that she is resisting them.

message 776: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments i haven't read Dark Swan either so I had nothing to compare it to when I was reading it. What Armentrout book copied Mead's?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) The thing is, I get irritated when people HIGHLY praise a book if it's been ripped off from another because I feel like the original author is being cheated by not getting the credit. Especially when the story isn't marked as fan fiction.

It doesn't matter how entertaining a book is, if the majority of the ideas were taken from another person (not a well-known lore or race system, but specific details), then that person who's copying shouldn't be getting as much as attention as they are.

But, I'm not far enough in yet. I left off at the start of chapter 5. If the rest of the book veers off into its own thing, then I will forget my rant. If it doesn't, then I think the only fair thing to do is to write a negative review.

Kay, it was this book that copied VA : Yes, I listed all of the similar details because it was hard not to notice.

message 778: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Mimi wrote: "Um, I haven't read Dark Swan, so I can't say... I probably won't either."

I haven't read Dark Swan either.

I always think of the Fey not going with technology (I guess because of the business of cold iron) and the medieval dress is sort of par for the course in most fantasy worlds so I'm not sure how those could be original to anybody who writes in the genre. Now the portals and the anchors are other things although I've seen those in other books (in the Demonica series, the Demons go different parts of the world via Harrowgates).

Yeah, I agree here. As said I haven't read Dark Swan, so maybe it's more than that, maybe it's very obvious, and the plot is similar too? Or the characters and the relationships?

In any case, I can't say and compare, I just liked this book independently, because of the characters, their relationships and the interesting political and war-connected happenings. Now, if any of that's similar, it'd be a big problem for me.

message 780: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Agree. If the relationships are similar, then there's something wrong going on, specially if other general points are similar too.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) As of right now, almost everything about the world and races are similar.

If this changes, then I will relax and be able to enjoy myself more. Hopefully, this will be the case because I want to like the book.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Sorry, I meant to say the details of the hows and whys are similar. The love triangle appears to be possibly similar as well in structure (the way they relate to one another), although both men are fey in this book, instead of 1 fey and 1 shifter.

message 783: by Mimi (new)

Mimi Smith | 94 comments The LT... You mean one guy she has always been in love with and the other who is kind of an enemy?

message 784: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Stacia ~ still lollipopping like a mofo wrote: "although both men are fey in this book, instead of 1 fey and 1 shifter. "

That doesn't seem that much of a difference if the structure of the love triangle is similar!

message 785: by Mimi (last edited Apr 19, 2012 02:31PM) (new)

Mimi Smith | 94 comments Yes well, I fully believe there's a limited number of ways to write a LT, but if there are other things, too... I guess, y'all should see if this continues...

message 786: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Apr 19, 2012 02:33PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Mimi wrote: "The LT... You mean one guy she has always been in love with and the other who is kind of an enemy?"

The one guy who she has a strong connection with, then a newcomer enemy comes along who is willing to kill her if necessary but you can tell he holds a fascination with her.

Also. Book 1 of Dark Swan you have a human who has no Fey abilities (that we know of to start. it's not hard to tell that this will change), yet can interact with and travel to Fey worlds as needed to do her job, which is the same.

But I'm going to stop now. I'm seriously hoping that by tomorrow I will be more than halfway into the book and that enough things will be different that I will be able to move on and forget the start.

So far, the book is entertaining!

message 787: by Carina (new)

Carina Butting in:
Well I hope The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams becomes its own, and the similarities end there.
I've gotten used to finding similarities in books, but Half-Blood (Covenant, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout wasn't just similar, it was a complete rip off from the Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead series. Which completely and utterly sucks, cause I was hoping book 2 would TRY and become something else, but how original can it really become when all the foundation is a ripoff?
Unfortunatelly, I am too invested in finding out if Armentrout will change this in the next books. So yes, I will keep reading them. Do you know how horrible this makes me feel? Guilty, dirty and like a traitor to Richelle Mead, whom I love.
Sorry to intrude in your conversation =)

message 788: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I know some books start similar and end up completely different. I know when I started reading Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee , it reminded me a lot of Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor but then after a while it became its own thing. I hope it happens here too!

message 789: by Leea (new)

Leea Maybe I should wait to start The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams ? If it's just like Dark Swan, I don't want to read it. harsh I know but that was my least favorite series by Mead.

You know how you're having one of those days and then you step in gum and that's the last straw - that's my day, again.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) That's odd. I didn't feel any big similarities between Angelfall and DoSaB. Angelfall started out right away as a darker feeling post-apocalyptic, whereas DoSaB came out of the gate with a lyrical fantasy feel. I loved them both though and gave both of them an ultra-rare (for me these days) 5 star rating.

Carina, I know. I keep reading the Covenant books because of my love for Dimitri and having Aiden so similar it's like getting to spend more time with Dimitri. But because I felt like Mead deserved better than being ripped off, I took the star rating off my books and instead just wrote in my review what I did and didn't like.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Oh, and Carina...someday you will have to check out Obsidian because I have the feeling you're going to love that one if you were sucked in by Half-Blood's style.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Leea wrote: "Maybe I should wait to start The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams? If it's just like Dark Swan, I don't want to read it. harsh I know but that was my least favorite series by Mead.

What happened?

message 793: by Carina (new)

Carina Dark Swan is my least fav by Mead too, and if you add all the similarities, well then I probably won't like Shadow Reader very much. Hopefully this won't be the case though ;)

DG, you just reminded me I have to finish Me Before You so I can read DoSaB, and I also have to give Angelfall a try. I feel no preasure at all...

I don't really want to try Obsidian. I've heard its a Twilight clone. Not as bad as Half Blood, but still very similar. I don't want to get in that sittuation again if I can help it. Armentrout's writting is addicting to me!

message 794: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Apr 19, 2012 03:09PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Hmmm...yes and no. There are a few background details which are the same (i.e. there was a meadow-like location, and the main character revealed his alien powers by saving her from a car accident) but the characters, story and world are completely different. There's no creeper stalker vibe or anything. The main characters fight for most of the book but when they start to hook up the sexual tension is nice.

I didn't find there to be enough similarities to want to bitch about it the way I did with Half-Blood, although I did list out the similarities in my review again. Because apparently, I'm sort of anal-retentive like that.

Just knowing you and the types of books/heroes you like, I'm pretty positive you'll like the book. It's an extremely easy read as well, so it's perfect after a heavier read.

message 795: by Carina (new)

Carina *sigh* I might try it then. But not until more books are out incase i do like it, hehe.
But if it makes me suffer and feel guilty, I'm holding you personally responsible.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Book 2 is out in a couple of months I think and the prequel is already out.

Nah. I don't think it will bother you the same. I was hard on HB (probably more so with book 2 because it kept going) and didn't have the same feelings toward her other work.

message 797: by Carina (new)
