Ugh, bullying sucks. When I was in 4th grade my little brother brought home lice from his preschool and I got it horribly. My grandma cut my hair really short (it was long) and well, by the time I got to 6th grade, it had grown out some, and, well, it looked like a mullet. And I have really thick and fluffy hair. So it didn't look cute, and it didn't help that I dressed like a boy. And in 6th grade, this new kid came in to school, Max (who apparently was already a headcase, he'd been kicked out of a couple schools and was shifted from foster home to foster home according to the guidance counselor), and he had the locker next to mine, and I made the mistake of saying hi and trying to be nice, and that put a target on me man. He quickly started picking on me all the time, calling me coon-head and saying all kinds of other mean stuff about my hair, saying it looked like a dead animal on my head, throwing bits of paper and spit-balls at me so it stuck in my hair, and all the other kids joined in. I never got any peace. And it didn't help that my best friend had moved to a different school. I was totally alone and friendless. It was the worst year of my life! No matter how many times I told the teacher, nothing was ever done except to move his seat from behind me to a different side of the room, not like that helped. Thankfully though, by the time 7th grade rolled around, when I came back from summer break, dreading what I was going to find, everyone had moved on to different targets, and Max had gone somewhere else, and my hair had grown out some more, to where I could finally at least pull it back in a ponytail to tame the fluffiness. I made a new best friend, and a couple other decent friends and life moved on. By high school I was good. I went all goth-lookin', y'know the clothes and black make-up and all that and never got picked on again lol. The 'cool' kids would even talk to me sometimes, I guess I wasn't the pariah anymore. But it left me wounded I guess, I still feel sore about it sometimes, even though most of the boys who had been the worst have found me on Facebook and such and apologized by now, which was nice. I guess we all kinda grew up. But I still hate my hair to this day, I keep it pulled back at all times unless I'm in the shower, and keep it moussed so I get no flyaways on the top part of my head. Control at all times lol. If I let it down and let it dry, it looks like Janis Joplin hair, only even bigger and fluffier. But I keep it long, it's to the small of my back now, though it was past my butt a couple months ago when my mum took me to get it cut and dyed.
I just really, really hope my kid doesn't have to go through anything like I did. And he better not be the bully either, or I'll kick his butt!

Regina, I'm so sorry your son has to go through that! I wish in this day and age we were past bullying.

I was bullied at various points in elementary and high school. What was weird was that in grade ten I switched schools. And I remember going to pre-grad parties in grade 12 where I would run into some of the same guys who had bullied me. Not only were they hitting on me, it was obvious they had no idea I was the same person they'd bullied. (This happened in a university run in as well.) It was shocking to me because so much of my emotional energy and well-being had been drained by the bullying, but me as a person, even as a target, hadn't even registered enough for them to make the connection.

Regina...let us know how it goes. The boy definitely sounds like he has issues. It sounds like you handled the 'gay' topic real well and I'm glad your son took it well too.

I was teased a lot in 6th grade. The boys liked to make fun of me b/c I didn't have any boobs yet. The teachers knew about it and I remember they told me that they were just "being boys." Even if they were, it hurt a lot b/c it was everyday teasing. As a 11 year old, I wasn't able to handle it well so I cried a lot. I remember wanting to physically hurt myself very much b/c it was better than dealing with the internal pain. Thankfully, I moved away in 7th grade but I'm still self conscience about my boobs today and I wanted to get implants at one point.

I do think that the bullying topic is handled a lot better in schools now. Like Kit, the teachers I told did nothing about it back in the day. I am just glad that people are more aware of what bullying could lead to nowadays.

It makes me sad to think that a child is growing up in a home where the word "gay" is taugt to be a bad word. He wont have any power or Sebastian when he says it the next time because it wont hold any weight.

Leea, the next books in the series are a lot better but like I said before, it's not as good as the Texas Trilogy. However, reading Texas Rogues made reading so much better since the characters from Rogues are in the majority of this story.

I think I missed the cowboy feeling. Because he was from England and just coming to America he lacked that kind of mystique.

Is the daughters of Fortune series better than the rogues?

In the next book of the Rogues, you will get more of the cowboy feeling. You actually see them change from Englishmen to Cowboys more in these books. And then when you read The Outlaw and the Lady, you will really see how they've established themselves as legit cowboys.

I only read the 1st & 2nd book of Daughters of Fortune. I loved The Outlaw and the Lady but didn't care for the 2nd one since that's when she transitioned to regency romance :*(

So Rapture is good so far, I am only 23 pages in but it feels like a Ward book -- which I love. :) If you remember (how funny that we have been chatting that long -- since long before the last Angel book was released!) I was hot and cold about her last book and liked #2. I am hopeful so far.

Wendy, I think I gave #1 two stars and then I gave #2 maybe 4 stars and then I went back and gave #3 maybe 3 stars, maybe 2.5 -- so I have been all over the place with it.

I feel the same way. It's awful when your kids are bullied, but we should be just as upset as parents if our kids are the ones doing the bullying themselves. So many parents take that 'kids will be kids' attitude and it frustrates me. You can still teach your kids not to do it!

Anyway, finished and had a few ranty things to say about it. I thought the sex scenes and dirty talk were yummy but the rest of the story was lacking and had some glaring issues/flaws.

Going back to and got a little past halfway on and oh lord...now I know what people are freaking out about.

Had the best day. Got to hold my best friends new daughter, Molly for a few hours while she rested. Oh, she's beautiful, perfect, spunky and I love her to pieces. I also didn't have any pangs to have another baby - Yay!

I just finished . Loved the guys, but didn't like some of the crap that happened and how long the book was. The first part was an enjoyable read though before something happened to change the vibe, so I might read something else by the author in the hopes that she doesn't screw it up just past the halfway point!

Well, I saw that the second Crossfire book came out today.. I've been waiting for it but I saw Stacia's comments on it and i'm little nervous... I loved the first one so much...

I don't think i'm in the mood for anything in particular. Just something really great. I've spent the last six weeks watching the first 8 seasons of law and order on netflix.

So maybe not a crime romance set in the early 90's :)

I'm surprised that I even gave the book a 2 and had some good things to say about it. For once, I wasn't the pickiest person in the bunch. That kind of feels good. :p

I'm also happy to see that you loved Hallowed Ones. That book was very good. I hope it gets some of the publicity that it deserves. It was such a well-written and interesting book.

I'm about 45% into Texas Rain and this one took about 25% to build for me. Now i've totally vested in the characters and the story and it's unfolding. It's deeply layered.

How is it?

I like it but there is a lot of detail and the story is building. I'm wondering how the sex will be, if it will be fade to black or if we'll get some detail.

I think also because this is a first in the series we're getting a lot of information about how the family was formed, the siblings and it really makes me want to read the other books.
