Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've just finished reading White Oleander by Janet Fitch and I'm about to start The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks.

message 2152: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I just started Dawn on a Distant Shore (Wilderness, #2) by Sara Donati

message 2153: by Leea (new)

Leea Did you read Into the Wilderness (Wilderness, #1) by Sara Donati ? I really liked this series, I know others didn't but I found the history so fascinating and I loved how the family develops. At least this series is finished and the last book is out and it ties it all up.

message 2154: by Domino (aka Meme) (new)

Domino (aka Meme) (bryghtstarr) | 231 comments i like that series too Leea. i've only gotten through book two though. i agree that the family development is great. Sara Donati does a great job at developing her characters.

message 2155: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Leea, I did, about two years ago. I liked the first one a lot. I tried to start the second one a number of times but never could get into it. But that was before it was available in ebook. And I think that affected my enjoyment. So I am trying again since I liked #1 so much.

message 2156: by Leea (new)

Leea I think that the second book is the weakest in the series. The rest I enjoyed more but I loved the whole series.

message 2157: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I loved the first one. So much. But each one after that got progressively less interesting for me. I think I read the first 3.

message 2158: by Leea (new)

Leea Books 4, 5, and 6 deal mainly with the children and them finding love. The last book was my favorite. Daniel is one of my favorite Bonner Children and he's damaged, dark and alone.

message 2159: by Gwennie (last edited Jun 02, 2012 01:59PM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I think that my problem wasn't that the books weren't good, my problem was that I was attached to Elizabeth and Nathaniel. Reading the other books just didn't hold me because I just wanted Liz and Nathaniel. It was like if we only got one and a half books about Jamie and Claire and then they were just side characters. (Well not completely like that, because Liz and Nathaniel were NOOOO Claire and Jamie, haha. But you know what I mean.)

I love that series. I re-read the first book every so often when I don't know what to read next! Do you know of any other books like this? Or at least in this historical time frame?

message 2161: by Leea (last edited Jun 02, 2012 03:07PM) (new)

Leea Have you read Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon ?

I've really enjoyed Mistress of Rome (Rome, #1) by Kate Quinn and The Bronze Horseman (Tatiana and Alexander, #1) by Paullina Simons

The Bronze Horseman is one of my favorite series of all time :)

I hated that ending. I thought it didn't make any sense how (view spoiler) I don't even know if I'll read the third book.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Just breezed through a quick read Frostbite The Graphic Novel (Vampire Academy The Graphic Novel, #2) by Richelle Mead . I love the illustrations for Rose and Dimitri. He's a HOT comic book character! Didn't know how that was possible but it is.

Still plugging away at The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1) by Scott Lynch . It's starting to get to a good part.

message 2164: by D.G. (last edited Jun 02, 2012 03:15PM) (new)

D.G. I'm listening to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain (for the first time), almost done with The Second Sunrise by Francesca Greer , the traveling book from one of my other groups (one of the craziest book I've read...a bodice ripper set in early 80s) and I started reading The Thirteen Problems (Miss Marple, #2) by Agatha Christie , a group of short stories from the Miss Marple series I haven't read.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Sometimes I think I want to go back and read some 80's bodice rippers, just to see how I'd view them now.

message 2166: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Regina - In Cold Blood by Truman Capote is on the Banned Books shelf so I'm thinking of reading it. Does it work for you to buddy read this month?

This one is nuts. Sometimes I think the author was making fun of the whole genre.

Yes! When do you want to do it? I would love to do this. Catie will want to join us too, if that is okay.

message 2169: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I read this bodice ripper (which includes a rape by a husband, cheating by a husband -- he comes to her birthing bed smelling like another woman, and conning a woman into sex just to win a bet) Seized by Love (Russian series/Kuzan Family series, #1) by Susan Johnson I found it on a list on Amazon's forum for women looking for romances with cheating heroes. That theme/topic intrigued me enough, I wanted to know why so many women wanted this theme. The book made me want to keep reading, but I can't say I liked it. :) If anyone is interested in reading it, let me know.

I recently read quite a few graphic novels, these:
How is the audio of Tom Sawyer? The Exile An Outlander Graphic Novel by Diana Gabaldon Y The Last Man, Vol. 1 Unmanned by Brian K. Vaughan Welcome to the Jungle (The Dresden Files, #0.5) by Jim Butcher The Dresden Files Storm Front, Volume 1 The Gathering Storm by Jim Butcher and there were several characters in each of them that is hot.

In July a new Barrons and Mac story is coming out in graphic novel Fever Moon The Fear Dorcha by Karen Marie Moning

Regina (reginar) I am so glad GR fixed the book display issue.

message 2171: by Regina (last edited Jun 02, 2012 05:06PM) (new)

Regina (reginar) Did I tell you all I bought the new Laura Kaye book? Her Forbidden Hero by Laura Kaye , I haven't read it yet.

message 2172: by Leea (new)

Leea Regina wrote: "I am so glad GR fixed the book display issue."

Yeah, I just noticed that. Finally :)

message 2173: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments Ahh, finally finished Cold Magic (The Spiritwalker Trilogy #1) by Kate Elliott ...I think I need a lighter read after this. It made me think too much.

message 2174: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments Now I'm going to start on Talk Me Down (Tumble Creek, #1) by Victoria Dahl !

message 2175: by Leea (new)

Leea Talk me Down is cute! I read it not to long ago. If you continue the series let me and I might join you :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Talk me down is a fun read. Definitely fluff if you're in the mood for a switch.

message 2177: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments I made a great choice, then!

As for Cold Magic (The Spiritwalker Trilogy #1) by Kate Elliott , it actually turned out a lot better than I thought it would be. I keep thinking about it now.

message 2178: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Regina wrote: "Yes! When do you want to do it? I would love to do this. Catie will want to join us too, if that is okay"

Oh yes! I knew Catie wanted to read it too so I was thinking of the three of us (I just forgot to mention it.)

I just heard a sample of the audio and it seems good so I could start it as soon as I'm done with Tom Sawyer, which could happen in a couple of days.

message 2179: by D.G. (last edited Jun 03, 2012 05:20AM) (new)

D.G. The audio of Tom Sawyer is really good (narrated by a guy called Grover Gardner.) I've tried different audios in the past but never liked the narrator until this one (there are tons of different versions out there.)

message 2180: by D.G. (last edited Jun 03, 2012 05:28AM) (new)

D.G. In this bodice ripper I just read, there was a couple of punishing kisses but he really didn't rape her. The heroine said he did (tells him so a couple of times) but I don't know of any rape where the woman is in her right mind (no drugs or anything) participates eagerly, never says no, doesn't fight or call for help and then goes for a second round!

At some point, she's reminiscing of the "rape" and how much she liked it.

I tell you, the whole book is hysterical.

message 2181: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Didnt old bodice rippers call scenes like that "rape" to make it acceptable that the woman was a willing participant? The one I refer to above has scenes that start off as rape (he is drunk and returning home from being with other mistresses) and then she ends up liking it. Which to me is different. The book ends with her begging him to give up his mistresses and he is contemplative and says - we'll see. Yours sounds better. :)

D.G. Regina wrote: "Didnt old bodice rippers call scenes like that "rape" to make it acceptable that the woman was a willing participant? "

This is the first one of this ilk I've read so I don't know but what you say makes sense. But she has a lot of sex in this book and only calls it rape the first time (the following gazillion times, she follows him around, gets into a fight with the guy until he starts taking off her clothes and they do it.)

message 2183: by D.G. (new)

D.G. My husband has been telling me to post here since yesterday. Lots of children's ebooks on sale at Amazon:

message 2184: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Thanks DG!

message 2185: by Leea (new)

Leea D.G, Thanks! Does that mean i'd have to share my Kindle with the kids? Lol!

message 2186: by D.G. (new)

D.G. You're welcome! I'll tell my husband you found them useful.

I posted a general update about it because maybe other people may find something there.

message 2187: by Leea (last edited Jun 03, 2012 09:01PM) (new)

Leea I'm still reading Empress of the Seven Hills about 75% done and the author keeps referring the Mistress of Rome, the first book but they the character will say "well that's another story" or "we know what happened." Not sure why it's driving me crazy. I also feel like the main characters are just circling each other, I feel like this whole story is coming to one point and the rest is just filler. I may be wrong. It's heavy on war, marching, blood and death. It's just not that interesting.

I feel like i'm still trying to find that feeling I got when reading Mistress of Rome

Wendy, I'm hoping to be done tonight so we can start Out of Control. I've already read the first 5 chapter so go ahead and start girl!

message 2188: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Today has been a crazy day, i haven't had a chance to read. I'll probably start it tomorrow at work.

message 2189: by Leea (new)

Leea I finished Empress of the Seven Hills (Rome, #3) by Kate Quinn I don't even think i'm going to write a review. I'm just glad it's done for. The last 2 lines of the book just made me so mad.

I'll be resuming my read of Out of Control (Troubleshooters, #4) by Suzanne Brockmann tomorrow with Wendy :)

message 2190: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Leea, I'm 52% in. I've been packing all day for our trip (we're leaving at 4am) and I hardly had time to read today. I really like reading Vix's POV, Sabina has been pissing me off....I don't think I like her. Now, I'm worried about the ending. Maybe Mistress of Rome is her best work & nothing else will ever compare.

message 2191: by Leea (new)

Leea I'm sorry, i'm just bitter. lol! I loved Mistress. Oh, where are you going for your trip?

message 2192: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I loved Mistress too & this book doesn't have the same feel.

We're heading to Carlsbad. My son is excited about Legoland. He's die hard about Ninjago so I hope they have something about these ninjas.

message 2193: by Leea (new)

Leea That's right! Oh, yeah, Legos are huge in our house. Ninjago's are hard to find where we live.

Kay, I hope you have a wonderful trip and that the kids behave :) I can't wait to hear all about your fun. Legoland is awesome!

4am drive, I hope that goes as planned and that you make great time.

message 2194: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Thanks, Leea. Ninjagos are hard to find here as well. When I asked the worker at the Legos store, he said that Lego didn't make enough to meet demand bc they didn't realize how popular it would be. The new line will be out this month or July and he said that they would make enough this time. Let's hope so. *crossing fingers*

message 2195: by Leea (new)

Leea Oh, good. The boys keep saving their money for them lol! When grandma visit she leavens them $5 on their pillows. They just got some new Avenger Lego sets, they are awesome!

Travel safe and I can't wait to hear all about it :)

message 2196: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Starting Out of Control (Troubleshooters, #4) by Suzanne Brockmann today with Leea! I'm excited.

message 2197: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 337 comments I finished Talk Me Down (Tumble Creek, #1) by Victoria Dahl ! It was so good! Just what I needed and I believe I can call it a favorite. So funny and steamy.

Now I'm going to switch to historical romance - Unveiled (Turner, #1) by Courtney Milan !

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) It was a fun book.

Let me know how you like Turner. I think Kay, Leea and I were going to buddy read it but now I can't do it this week, so I have to wait at least another week minimum, unless they want to start this week then I'll just talk to them about it later.

message 2199: by Leea (new)

Leea I forgot we were going to read that. haha! I can wait :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I'm so behind on what I was going to read this week and I'm on a buddy read that's going very slow because it's a long and heavy book.

Also started Noah (5th Street, #1) by Elizabeth Reyes
