Carmen No. They'll Holliwoodize it and make it into so much fluff. Unless it's done by an indi film company with no mainstream actors. I would like to see a graphic novel first.

message 152: by Nancy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nancy Vann It would be better as two or more movies (like the Lord of the Rings cycle or Harry Potter). Too much to fit into a couple of hours. Would love to see it!

Marilee I believe there are directors who could pull this film off.. Peter Jackson, Tim Burton... are just a couple. Night Circus has some wonderfully magical elements that could bloom cinematically.

I understand that the book has been optioned and is in what is known as "development". That does not mean it will make it to the screen, only that someone thinks it has potential and bought the film rights. As I understand it, at least one, perhaps more, screenplays are being written.

Beverly Tim Burton!

Kathleen Varn When I finished reading, I asked myself "why isn't anyone making this into a movie?" I believe Erin Morgenstein would insure that her story would be preserved. I'd enjoy the special effects and think the storyline was woven well by looking past and present.

message 156: by Kathleen (new) - added it

Kathleen Harsch I think with its complex characters, you would need a series. So, I think it would be more suited to a television series on like HBO or something like that.

Nashwa I think it's gonna be a great movie

message 158: by Laura (new) - rated it 4 stars

Laura Wattie Yes I think it would be a good film but a television series could work too.

message 159: by Gerd (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gerd I've a hard time to imagine it as a tv-mini-series, I think "The Night Circus" would be too slow building, too character and dialogue driven to keep the attention of the average tv audiences.

message 160: by Kathy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kathy Willison-sackett I read somewhere that it's in development. Loved the book, would love to see this as a movie!

message 161: by 7706laurel (new)

7706laurel I think they would ruin it...

Jennifer Achterhof I would LOVE to see this book made into a movie!

Melanie Bayhurst Veronica wrote: "Oh, Tim Burton would give it that twist! Love that idea. So, what character would Johnny Depp play, then? Lol."

I think Johnny Depp could play the man in the gray suit.

Carolyn not unless it's direct by Ang Lee.

message 165: by Gaby (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gaby Testa ya

Gaby Testa Carolyn wrote: "not unless it's direct by Ang Lee."

i agree ang lees movie was amazing!!!

Jessica Liz wrote: "It would have to take one talented director to pull it off well...I don't think Tim Burton would be the best man for the job. Not with what he's been doing recently. Ten years ago, I would have sai..."

Yes! I completely agree-- Tim Burton, while certainly a fine director and very good at what he does, is not the right choice for The Night Circus. Burton's recent movies have been so outlandish. There's a certain subtlety to the magic in The Night Circus, and thus a more subtle and sophisticated directorial approach is needed. The color and noise of Alice and Willy Wonka would be so, so wrong here.

message 168: by Emily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emily As much as I loved the book I would be afraid of some of it coming off kind of druggy (like the bottles that hold smells/memories) but if it were to be a movie I vote Jessica Brown Findlay as Celia

message 169: by Nicky (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nicky Kathy wrote: "I read somewhere that it's in development. Loved the book, would love to see this as a movie!"

Yes, I have too! Weren't there rumors linking David Heyman to a movie adaption of this?

IMDB certainly has an 'in development' page for The Night Circus, but it's been quiet for a while now...

I'm not quite sure what to think of it.
I like the imagery I built in my own imagination of the circus, I'm not sure if I'm ready to have it altered by watching a movie version of the book.
But curiosity usually gets the better of me when there's a movie version of a book I've read and liked, so I'll probably end up watching it eventually.

message 170: by Gaby (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gaby Testa I think it should be a movie

message 171: by Arlene (new) - rated it 4 stars

Arlene Definitely, I kept thinking that the whole time I was reading the book.

Jennifer Toews Yes! Baz Lurhmann should direct...

message 173: by della (new) - rated it 4 stars

della Absolutely not. This was a beautiful book which by the time it made to the big screen would most likely be unrecognizable. I have yet to see a movie adaptation that I felt did justice to the wonderful book it was based on.

message 174: by Jeff (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jeff Coleman I would love to see this made into a film! I wasn't super excited about the characters, but the visual descriptions are vivid and beautiful and are begging to be adapted to a big screen.

message 175: by Jeff (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jeff Coleman Katrina wrote: "It would be an amazing movie visually, but I don't believe there is enough plot (for lack of a better phrase) to make a movie. Not a lot happens plot-wise... but I would still definitely see the mo..."

I actually think this is one of the reasons why it would make a good movie :) It's not too plot heavy, which means it will fit perfectly into a 1.5 or 2 hour time slot (I hate movie adaptations of books that are so lengthy that they have to cut everything out.)

message 176: by Melody (new) - rated it 1 star

Melody I could not get through book. Maybe I'll rent movie if it comes out on DVD

message 177: by Inge (new) - rated it 5 stars

Inge It will be insanely good to adapt this book into a film. But a director like Baz Luthman or the like should take on this project. Imagine this circus coming to life? It will be like circ de solei on acid ;)

message 178: by Gerd (last edited May 13, 2013 10:23PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gerd I have a hard time seeing either Luhrman or Burton in the director's seat for that one,I feel that The Night Circus had often a nice understated way of presenting magic, a subtility that those two entirely miss in their work.

message 179: by Inge (new) - rated it 5 stars

Inge Yes Liz, Cirque Du Soleil.

Gerg - who would you then choose as Director?

message 180: by Gerd (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gerd Difficult to say, I would love to see someone tackling this who isn't prone to spoil it by too abundant use of computer effects.

My Feeling is that a movie adaptation would gain from someone that comes to it from a differrent media, preferrably a stage director.

message 181: by Jacob (last edited May 14, 2013 07:11PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jacob Here's my dream cast:

Ang Lee directs.
Rooney Mara as Celia.
Colin Firth as the man in the grey suit.
Adrien Brody as Chandresh.

message 182: by Bonia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bonia it would be amazing if they decided to make it as a movie. but, considering the visual thing from the novelm well i dont know but im afraid IF they failed like what happenned to dr. parnassus movie

message 183: by Gerd (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gerd Liz wrote: "Julie Taymor has done a lot of work with the state, and I think she would be the best to adapt this book into a movie. It's totally up her alley..."

Unfortunately only know her Titus, which falls among worst Shakespeare adaptation ever for me, clearly it didn't help that with all the violence it is my least favourite play also (still, Hopkins was brilliant as usual).

//claire i'm not sure. I've been disappointed so many times when books are made into movies. I just don't think any producer would be able to do it justice.

message 185: by Lauren (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lauren Wiseman I can't really say anything that hasn't been said--save maybe I'd be fine with Luhrman, del Toro, or Scorsese in the director seat. I personally, as an actress, would love to play Celia (even though I'm a little young still.) But I have the brown hair, brown eyes--and I care about the book and the story enough that I would try to do her justice. But I'm not a professional, so unfortunately unknowns get passed over for known actors.

message 186: by Cary (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cary Figueroa A. wrote: "No, I don't think it would be too interesting as a film, but I could be wrong. For a small second there while reading, I thought of an actual Night Circus traveling the country re-enacting events ..."

I absolutely agree, "A." This would have to be an experience for all the senses. Just seeing the effects on screen would be a let-down, I think.

message 187: by Gaby (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gaby Testa I think it should be a movie. In fact i hear rumors about a night circus movie being made.

message 188: by Sydney (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sydney I think that the movie I had in my head would be way better than any real movie. I would only want it to be made into a movie if it reached my expectations. I think it would be a little difficult to put all of the magic onto the big screen and I think would in turn hurt the book. Also I can't think of any actors/actresses that would really do the characters justice.

Jessica Spear i would love to see this as a movie! that being said,i fear it is too good of a book to be dumb ed down for today's movie watchers. i think the book would lose its soul during the transfer.

Susan YES!

Rashomon It would be a really cool movie if made well, but there is so many possible ways for it to go wrong and be done badly. Also the movie may be disappointing since the book was so good and the movie may not live up to it.

message 192: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy I would love to be made into a movie but so many awesome books get ruined this way... Tim burton would be good to direct it though...

message 193: by Marian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Marian If they got it right, it would make a phenomenal movie.

message 194: by Chris (new) - rated it 5 stars

Chris Cole I liked this book, but I think this is one of those rare instances where the movie could work just as well.

message 195: by Nikki (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nikki I hate to sound cliche and I'm sure many will disagree, but it strikes me as a Tim Burton film in the making. But who knows, his movies have been flubbing as of late.

message 196: by Nikki (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nikki John wrote: "While the visual aesthetics could be captured, I doubt any of today's directors would be able to properly capture the actual mood of the book in an organized movie, especially with today's 1.5-2 ho..."

Yeah, but you can't deny that seeing those visual aesthetics brought to life wouldn't be fantastic!

message 197: by Katie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Katie Mauger I think it could be really excellent or really terrible. The book had an unusual writing style that took me a while to get used to. That could make the movie confusing unless they change the timeline completely to have it make sense chronologically, but then they might ruin the mystery and excitement of the story. Another issue is that our imaginations came up with some pretty cool images to go along with this book, and in order for the movie to be successful the special effects and imagery are going to have to be pretty incredible. I disagree about Tim Burton being a good director for this. I think that it would be a great movie for Guillermo Del Toro to direct! Just imagine this story with the emotional and visual effects of Pan's Labyrinth! It could be incredible.

message 198: by Gaby (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gaby Testa I think it should be a movie

Saxonjus It would be a creative fim if it was made into a film then Tim Burton should direct it! & made as an animated film similar to The Corpse Bride

Oumaima Rouky absolutely!! that's exactly what I said after finishing the book.
