I don't understand the automatic link of a good book with a movie. These days there doesn't seem to be a single book discussion without someone asking when there's going to be a movie, talking about possible actors, and so on...
I understand authors mentioning that, after all it's more money for their (usually) struggling lives, but readers...?
If you've loved a book, nothing - no movie, tv series, best actor or director - will ever compare to the images you already have in your mind, so why beg to be disappointed?
It's beyond me...

Also, while I love the writing's descriptions one of the reasons they are so vivid is the reader's imagination. I would think that the more vivid the imagination of the reader the more vivid the circus was. While the special effects of a movie could be truly remarkable it might ruin the extraordinary, enchanting and occasionally bewildering ones that are so real in my mind.

Well, I'd like to see an adaptation if it were done right, but I'd rather that they didn't make a movie at all than make one which is anything short of perfect.

I would also like to see it done by G del Torro. I mean just imagine what the Ice Garden, the labyrinth or the carusel would look like with his touch! :)
Burton I feel may perhaps have the style but it would be just like any one of his other films; with J Depp and H Boham Carter. As much as I like those two they do not match to the book at all!

I KNOW RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I BET HE WOULD CAST HELENA BONHAM CARTER! but as who??

Great idea for a TV mini-series. HBO, are you listening???

Oh my Gosh, Erin - halfway through the book, I was thinking what a stunning treatment Gilliam would give this!

I completely agree with Rachel. The film would be stunning visually - how could it not be? - and I honestly think a retelling could only improve the characters and plot. What little there was of them.

That said, I think Guillermo del Toro would be perfect for this. The images of Pan's Labyrinth match what I read in The Night Circus perfectly.
If Tom Hiddleston were younger, I'd say he'd make a perfect Marco. See clips from Return to Cranford and you'll see what I mean.
Tim Curry as Prospero/Hector Bowen.
Johnny Depp as Alexander?
Ellen Page as Celia.
David Ogden Stiers as Herr Thiessen.
Anyway, that's my dream list.

Ellen Page, really?

"It isn't thought out well enough?" Wow, you just insulted one of my favorite books. I think it's perfect as it is, therefore it doesn't need a movie.

@Jacob: Yup, Ellen Page. I think she would make a very good Celia.

Whoever plays Celia will need grace, and charisma, both of which Ellen Page lack. Personally I'd choose somebody like Emily Blunt, or Rooney Mara, maybe Eva Green if she were a bit younger.

Kelsey Grammar would be great as Hector. Maybe Adrien Brody could play Chandresh, he's due for a comeback, don't you think?

I regret disagreeing, but I have yet to see Kelsey Grammar act. He is a TV personality who plays himself (as do most "actors" on TV). I would love to see this done as a mini-series with a British, drawn-from-the-stage cast (think of the amazing cast of "The History Boys").

I agree, I think this would be a specatulor movie for special effects!! But like with most books to movies, I am sure they would ruin the story. I loved the story, and it is too complex for a movie, they would have to cut to many charactor relationships.

That is a perfect example of a very good book into a terrible movie!! I loved the book, and I was told DO NOT watch the movie, but after several days, I just could not resist and rented the movie. I was so disappointed, i absoluted hated what they did to the movie. Why can't they follow the books a bit more closely?
I think this book would either make a brilliant film or a really rubbish film, it just has to be done right. I know I would see it instantly if it was made into a film. Certainly would love to see it in 3D
