Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished reading The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck by John Steinbeck. The Grapes of Wrath is a beautifully written but extremely moving and heartbreaking novel with interesting, realistic and well-developed characters. I love John Steinbeck's wonderful writing style. I just loved his fantastic vivid descriptions of the landscape and the people. At times the descriptions of the barren landscape and the appalling conditions the family have to put up with is very depressing. I wanted to put the book down sometimes due to this but I'm glad a persevered through and finished the novel. This novel well deserved the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction it won in 1940 and it really is a masterpiece of 20th Century literature. It is definitely a must read! Four stars!

Now I'm about to start on The Divide by Nicholas Evans by Nicholas Evans.

Steph, I don't know when. It was supposed to be done by now but it's not so I'm not sure what's going on with it. I haven't searched for anymore info lately. I suppose I could email the author.

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book Finished the above book I was reading, then read Big Stone Gap (Big Stone Gap, #1) by Adriana Trigiani by Adriana Trigiani and am now reading The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff by Breanna Yovanoff

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book Nope, not going to continue with The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff I didn't care about the characters to continue reading, and there didn't seem to be a story because I think the author was trying too hard to be mysterious. And by page 76 you should have a general idea of where the story is going and you should care about the characters.

So I'm now going to start The Last Wife of Henry VIII by Carolly Erickson by Carolly Erickson

message 926: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've just finished The Divide by Nicholas Evans by Nicholas Evans and Plum Lovin' (Stephanie Plum, #12.5) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich.

The Divide started off so well but the plot did get quite slow halfway through the book. I did wish it would speed up at times but the story did remain strangely engaging. The last 60 or 70 pages of the novel were just as gripping and compelling as the first half of the novel. To tell the truth, I enjoyed the family drama sub-plot a lot more than I liked the murder mystery plot but I think that was probably because I didn't like the character of Abbie all that much so I found it hard to care about what happened to her. I loved all the vivid and wonderful descriptions of the Montana setting and landscape that made me feel like I was actually there. Nicholas Evans has got a great writing style and I love his use of language and imagery. I gave this novel 3½ stars!
My full review can be found here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I love all the regular Stephanie Plum novels but I'm not sure I like these between the numbers novellas. I was very disappointed by Plum Lovin'. Nothing much happened in it and it was extremely dull and boring. It wasn't anywhere near as funny as the regular novels do be and I really hate the supernatural element in the novella. I gave it 1½ stars!

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book Leslie wrote: "What about the book that didn't appeal to you Kim?"

It didn't grab me, the author didn't really pull me in. It was boring, didn't feel like it was really going anywhere and it was also kind of depressing (end of days type of stuff). But the depressing I could have handled if the story was more engaging. I skimmed ahead a bit to see if I'd feel like I would miss anything if I didn't read it and nope. Then I went and read the last couple of pages and nope, even that felt blah.

I was a bit disappointed because a friend highly recommended it - she loved it. I even requested it at the library and they had to bring it in from another branch (so then I felt guilty lol).

But the last book I read reconfirmed for me to trust my instincts with books. If I think I should stop reading because I won't enjoy the book then I should stop. The last book I went ahead and finished and I was so sorry I did. So as soon as I got that feeling with this book I decided to just trust my instincts for myself.

oh and in retrospect, there was one scene that bothered me more than I realized I think and I just didn't want to go any further. Even though I'm sure that scene was not a major part of the book, I'm sure it was the only one like it in the book and wasn't meant to be such a big deal but I think it was in my head. But I still read a bit further past that part, and it just wasn't grabbing me, I didn't care enough to find out what was happening.

message 947: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (chibilee02) Thanks for the mini review. I've seen it on the library website and I've wondered about getting it.

I usually use a mix of my gut instinct and other's recommendations/reviews of books to help decide whether to read it. A majority of the time I didn't regret it, but there have been times where I read the book and I'm thinking to myself, "How did this book get so many positive reviews?"

If I find myself not enjoying a book, my habit is just to continue to the end with it. I don't like stopping something in the middle of it just because I'm not liking it. I have this weird feeling like I owe it to the book to finish what I started. Lol

Anyways, thank you for the feedback. It helps me filter out what to read. There's so many books out there, so little time and I got to narrow my lists down. Lol

Kim-Lost-In-A-Book lol I understand. The "so many books, so little time" that's exactly why I don't finish books I'm not enjoying. I don't owe the book anything (it owes me nothing) and I have so many others I can read instead :-)

I get that people want to finish what they start and that's great, I'm just not always that way. It just depends on what it is that I've started and if it's healthy (physically or emotionally) for me to finish it. I guess that goes for books for me too.

message 949: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (chibilee02) That's completely understandable. The whole "finishing what I started" thing is part of my anal, Type A personality. Lol
