4.1 She Works Hard for the Money
I have been Mineola's library director for 3 years, and before that I have had a variety of jobs, along with a teaching career. For this task, you get to read about the multitude of careers I’ve had, or thought about having. Fiction or non-fiction is acceptable for all choices. As always, explain how your book fits if it’s not obvious from the goodreads’ book description.

Roll a die. Die Roller REQUIRED: State what you rolled when posting.

Select your book based on the following options:

1: Librarian. I love everything about this job ... the books of course, but getting to know the patrons and encouraging children to read is especially rewarding. For this task read a book that takes place in a library, has a librarian as a character or a book about books. Here are a few lists with suggestions. Books about Books, Books about Librarians,Picture Books about the Library

2: Teacher. I taught Jr. High Language Arts for 4 years in Tennessee and 3 years in Texas. Grading 6th grade essays and journals was fun for awhile, but eventually I got burned out doing it. Read a book in which an educational setting is important. The character may be a teacher or student and the setting need not be traditional (ex: home school, summer camp, etc.). Examples: The Abstinence Teacher, The Secret History, Hate List

3: Customer service. While enrolled in college I worked customer service at a music store, and waited tables at a brewery. Read a book about working in a customer service industry (Starbucks, Walmart, diner, etc.) Examples: Hope Was Here, Kitchen Confidential Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, How Starbucks Saved My Life A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else

4: Veterinarian. I have always had a cat or dog as a pet, and growing up I thought seriously about going to school to be a veterinarian. Read a book about any animal (domesticated or wild) or a book with an animal doctor as a main character. Here are a few lists and books to offer suggestions: Best Books about Animals, Great Dog Books, Great Books about Cats, While You're Here Doc Farmyard Adventures of a Maine Veterinarian, Why Sarah Ran Away with the Veterinarian

5: Cosmetologist. I took Cosmetology in high school because a girlfriend talked me into it. I later graduated from Jan Mar Beauty Academy in Newport News, Va. As a hairdresser I met my husband who is a barber. After a couple of years as a beautician I gave up the beauty shop for motherhood and never went back. For this challenge find a book with hair on the cover or a book about a beautician / barber.

Examples: Fallen Grace by Mary Hooper , The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams , The Mullet by Barney Hoskyns , Beauty Shop Tales, Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

6: Author. When I’m not reading, I like to write. Maybe someday I’ll be a published author! Read a book in which a character is a writer, a book about being or becoming a writer, OR read a work of poetry (of at least 100 pages, books may be combined to reach 100 pages). Examples: The Thirteenth Tale, Writing Down the Bones Freeing the Writer Within, The Book Thief

4.2 Group Reads
Read one of the Group Reads selections, and make at least one post in the discussion thread for the book.

A. Published in the Twenty-Teens: The Night Circus
The discussion thread is here: The Night Circus discussion

B. YA Dystopian: Divergent

C. Short Stories/Anthology: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
The discussion thread is here. Sherlock Holmes discussion

4.3 - Happy Rama Navami!

April 1st is the date of this year's Rama Navami, the celebration of the birth of Lord Rama, the hero of the legendary Indian epic, the Ramayana. In honor of this occasion, read a fiction or nonfiction book about or containing an aspect of myth, legend, folklore, fairy tale, or fable from any culture or part of the world you would like to learn more about. Books of short stories with a mythic slant, fairy tale retellings, and general nonfiction books on mythology or folklore work as well.

For example: Deathless retells the Slavic tale of Koschei the Deathless. The Fox Woman is based around the kitsune legends of Japan. The Welsh Fairy Book is a collection of Welsh folklore. Ramayana is an ancient epic from India. The Green Man Tales from the Mythic Forest is a compilation of stories about the Green Man.

For a list of mythology and retellings lists, click here. List of Mythology Lists Keep in mind when using Goodreads lists is that not all books will fit the task.
Optional: Tell us what myth or legend your book is inspired by, and where it originates in the world

4.4 - I Can’t Wait for Spring!

I love springtime! After a bleak, dark, dreary winter season, I start looking for signs that spring is on the way: the first robin, the first leaves of the crocuses and tulips peaking through the ground, the slight opening at the hint of warmth of the rhododendron and forsythia buds, and the warmth of a longer day. Spring brings hope and anticipation and lures me outside. I even enjoy and welcome the first warm, gentle rain which melts the snow and gives drink to the newly growing plants. And, I love the colors of spring as the flowers and plants wake and open, bringing new color to our yard.

This task is to honor that special time. You will read ONE book. Series titles may be used. REQUIRED: Post which option you chose.

1. BIRD: Read a book that has either a bird(s) on the cover or the name of a bird in the title.
REQUIRED: If you choose the cover option, include a link to the cover.
These lists might help:
The Birds
Birds in the Title

As always, not all books on a GR list will necessarily fit the task.

2. FLOWER: Read a book that has either a flower(s) or a flowering plant on the cover. REQUIRED: Post a link to the cover of the book
These lists might help:
Flowers on Covers
Flower Covers
As always, not all books on a GR list will necessarily fit the task.

3. SPRING WORDS: Read a book with a title that contains one of these words – sun, day, rain, gentle, warm, flower, bird, or any of the color words listed in option 4. Plurals are acceptable. Compound words containing one of these words, such as sunshine or daytime or sunbird are okay. (Note: a compound word is one in which each of the parts of the word is a separate word on its own)

4. COLORS: Read a book with the main cover color of yellow, red, orange, pink, salmon, apricot, purple, lilac, green or cream.
REQUIRED: Post a link to the cover of the book.

5. SPRING: Using the word “springtime,” read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in the word. The initials must be consecutive, but can be forward or backward. Examples: Neil Gaiman with consecutive initials forward, and Robert B Parker, with consecutive first and last initials backward.

4.5 – What's Your Genre?

For this task, pick YOUR favorite fiction genre then read 2 books from 2 DIFFERENT sub-genres within that genre.

For accepted genre & sub-genres for this task, use the following website:
Reader's Advice Genre Index The sub-genres selected should have two clearly different focuses...

FOR EXAMPLE: If your favorite genre is "Mystery Fiction", you could read a "Culinary Mystery" like Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder and a "Police Procedural" like The Black Echo with LAPD homicide cop Harry Bosch

If your favorite genre is "Science Fiction", you could read a "Dystopian Futures" novel like The Road and a "Military/War" novel like Starship Troopers

REQUIRED: When you post, state which genre and two sub-genres you’re using.

4.6 – Three/Four/Five
March, April, and May are the 3rd, 4th, and 5th months of the year - Read a book whose average rating is made up of the numbers 3,4, and 5 (i.e. no other number can be found in it so 3.34 is fine while 2.35 is not). (The book must have that rating when you start to read it - if the rating changes after you or other Goodreads members review it...i.e. if the score is higher or lower than 3.45 when you post the task it will still count.)

4.7 – What Song Was Number One the Day You Were Born?
Check out the link for Birthday #1. When you plug in your birthday you can find out what song was #1 on the day you were born. Be sure to pick the chart for USA (unless you happen to have been born in the UK or Australia). “Sugar Shack” by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs was the #1 song on my birthday! Once you determine your song you will need to read a book that has a word from the song title in its title.

4.8 - 1000 Awesome Things
I discovered a unique blog that spotlights 1000 Awesome Things. Read a totally random book based on a totally random number. First find your random number (between 1 and 1000) using the True Random Number Generator. Make sure you set the range Min: 1 and Max: 1000. Using the results go to the list of 1000 Awesome Things and find the awesome thing that coincides with the random number you picked. The challenge is to find a book that relates to your random awesome thing. EXAMPLE: My random number turned out to be 808 the awesome thing numbered 808 was “Coming home after a long day to the smell of someone cooking dinner.” I could read a book about food, cookbooks would also work. Or maybe the book I find to read has a picture of something appetizing on the cover. In my case grilled cheese is my husband's specialty and if I am super tired and don't want to cook when I get home he can usually be talked into making one for me. It sure is awesome! Here is a book I picked about grilled cheese The Grilled Cheese Madonna and 99 Other of the Weirdest Wackiest Most Famous eBay Auctions Ever Be sure to tell us what awesome task inspired the book you chose to read when you post.

True, some are bittersweet but there are also some beautiful nature poems included in his works ... which one was your favorite?

The Cereal Murders
Davidson, Dianne Mott 303 pages
Goldy finds herself in the middle of another murder during her current catering job at the exclusive Elk Park Preparatory School. As the College Advisory Dinner for Seniors and Parents ends, Goldy finds the body of the school valedictorian, Keith Andrews outside in the snow. Her son, a student at Elk Park, has become the target for not-so-funny pranks, and Julian, her eighteen year old helper, is a prime suspect in the murder.

It's a typical cozy mystery but this one really kept me guessing on who the murderer was until the end.

11. The Chocolate War 3.44
Cormier, Robert 253 pages
At an boy’s prep-school, Jerry Renault is faced with conforming to both the wishes of their teachers and the secret society of students in order to survive school. He rebels against a controlling group at his school, known as the "Vigils," who hand assignments to the victimized students and sit back to enjoy the chaos that ensues.

Jerry refuses to go along with the assignment they have given him: selling chocolate at the annual school chocolate sale. His resistance of both the gang and the administration, as represented by Brother Leon, makes him into an outcast and a victim of a horrible beating.

The author includes the voices of many of the student characters as they react to his defiance of the school fundraiser. One theme that is repeated in the book is the nature of cruelty and what it means for those who participate in it and the bystanders who let it continue.

As a teacher, I have unfortunately witnessed situations where the administration “looked the other way” as students were mistreated or victimized by other students or staff members.

Detective, Crime
23. The 9th Judgment
Patterson, James and Paetro, Maxine
416 pages

Same format as always and it is something I like - short chapters. The book starts off with what seems to be isolated or unconnected incidents, and then they start coming together as the story progresses.

Lindsey Boxer and her Murder Club friends are chasing a jewelry thief, a psycho who is gunning down women and their infant children at point-blank range, and looking for the person who killed a famous movie star’s wife. Interesting developments happen in the lives of two of the friends – a great ending and lead-in to the 10th installment..
