Candiss (tantara) | 996 comments I've just joined the group, and this particular challenge was one of the challenges that got me excited to do so. But I have a question: Do I start now, although I won't have much time to complete any list goals, or shall I wait to begin this until January 2013 (assuming this one will even be repeated?) Or shall I start now and carry over into next year (assuming again the challenge is done again next year?)

Thanks!

message 219: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Welcome to the group, Candiss! :) You can start now if you wish. For instance, you can choose a list and read maybe 5 books for this year. We will be doing this challenge again next year if you would like to wait though, or if you decide to start now, you can carry on with the list beginning in 2013.

message 220: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I think that is what I will do, since I know I will not complete my tasks for this year. :) I'm only 4/17 complete, lol. None of the books for this challenge coincide with my other challenges. A new start next year and I might get them finished!

Ashley, will you just rename the group, or open up another group?

message 223: by Ashley (new)

Ashley We will just be renaming the group as 2013 Reading Challenge so there won't be any confusion. :) So, when 2013 comes around, all of the 2012 stuff will be in archives and we'll start a new year with new goals. :)

That sounds great. Thanks, Ashley! So I'll enter the lists here that I'm most interested in working on and go from there. I happened to choose lists that - although I've read many from them prior to 2012 - I haven't read anything from since January 1st of this year, which makes things simpler with no backdating.

---------
I'm going to work on two lists for now. There are sooo many I want to read through, but I'm going to force myself to only take on what I can possibly actually handle for this project. (I've been a Listopia junkie for a very long time now.) For my own convenience, I'm also noting which books are included on the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list.

Best Gothic Books of All Time:
Goal: Finish the top 15
4. Rebecca - Daphne du Maurier (1001)
9. The Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield
11. The Phantom of the Opera - Gaston Leroux
12. Northanger Abbey - Jane Austen (1001)
14. The Woman in White - Wilkie Collins (1001)
15. The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafón

Translated Speculative Fiction:
Goal: Finish the top 25
1. Solaris - Stanislaw Lem (Poland, 1001)
3. We - Yevgeny Zamyatin (Russia, 1001)
4. Blindness - Jose Saramago (Portugal)
5. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - Haruki Murakami (Japan, 1001)
7. Kafka on the Shore - Haruki Murakami (Japan, 1001)
8. One Hundred Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Columbia, 1001)
12. Heart of a Dog - Mikhail Bulgakov (Russia)
13. Let the Right One In - John Ajvide Lindqvist (Sweden)
14. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World - Haruki Murakami (Japan)
15. The Trial - Franz Kafka (Czech Republic, 1001)
18. Ring - Koji Suzuki (Japan)
19. Labyrinths - Jorge Luis Borges (Argentina, 1001)
20. The Nutcracker - E.T.A. Hoffman (Germany)
25. Woman in the Dunes - Kobo Abe (Japan)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Looks like a fun list, Candiss! I probably need to do your Translated Speculative Fiction list next year--it looks killer.

1. To Kill a Mockingbird, 10/6
2. The Hobbit
3. Gone With the Wind, 7/14
4. Catch-22, 5/10
5. Lolita, 4/28

I also have the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list. I don't know if I will ever get through it, lol.

Yay, Kara! I will get you updated. I'm thinking I may try your "Best Books of the 20th Century" list for next year.

I took a list off of my challenge since I haven't read any from that list, so my goal is now 11. I am 3/11 complete. I'm looking forward to this challenge next year!

My husband loves Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The Hobbit was required reading for me in school. Maybe that is why I couldn't stand it. I've tried the LOTR movies and fall asleep in the first 20 minutes, so that kind of deters me from reading the books, haha.

LIST ONE: Favorite Magical Realism Novels"

House of the Spirits & Practical Magic are both on my to-read list too. In fact, I own both of them.

On another note, I've finally finished my first book for the challenge, from this list:Favorite Magical Realism Novels.

The book was The Ice Queen and for the record, it was awful. :S

Ashley I got everyone updated. Good work readers.

I think I'm going to have to give up on this challenge for this year. The list I chose earlier to read from are not the type of books I want to read now. My reading mood changes. So, I will be choosing my list carefully at the beginning of the year! (Maybe several lists to match my reading moods)

Will still be updating everyone else and cheering you all on! :)
