Richard Hartwell I taught it in 7th grade for 17 years.

message 363: by Masen (new) - rated it 1 star

Masen I had to read that last year

Crystal Wang I read it for 7th grade, but I probably would have read it myself later anyway.

Tiffany I read this last school year (2012-2013), and I was in 7th grade at the time. It made me cry so hard, those last several chapters! I had a huge pile of balled-up tissues near the tissue box.

Victoria It was published in 1997. I graduated High School in 1965, so no, I did not read it in school. I read it as a novel for pleasure, as the author intended. Interesting comments, though.

Madeline read it in at end of Year 10, i really enjoy reading the book.

message 368: by Steve (new) - rated it 5 stars

Steve If only! There was much drier stuff i had to read for my O'levels- Macbeth, DH Lawrence Short Stories and Lord Of The Flies.

Lord of the Flies would be good if not for all the religeous undertone you're supposed to see.
Macbeth was OK, probably the easiest Shakespeare to read.
I hated Lawrence then and still do

message 371: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy I remember reading this book in year 8 at senior school in English lessons and having to re-read it in order to answer pages and pages of questions on it and then write an essay about part of it.

somehow i managed to keep my copy of the book from school and i still have it now (i left school 15yrs ago!). It's a great book to read. Recently my 11yr old son asked if he could read it and i let him, he said it was a bit strange but he enjoyed it.

I didn't realize until i saw this discussion that it was still being read in school.

message 372: by Abi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Abi yup in 7th grade

message 373: by Sarah (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sarah I read it in English. I probably wouldn’t have chose it to read for fun, but after reading it I thought it was an okay book. Kind of boring though, like when you think something is going to happen and reach a climax, then it doesn’t. Ending has a cool twist though.

Emilyx 7th grade.

It was a good book, though my teacher tried to force us to see how "deep" book is, so it was barely appreciated for what it is.

English teachers...they all want to be poets.

Krista I didn't read this for school, but I think it would be a wonderful book to have in a school curriculum. It's my favorite book of all-time, and it changed my life (man, that sounds corny, but it's true!). The lessons in the book still resonate today, and who can forget Darry, Ponyboy, and Sodapop?
