Who else read this for school?

8th grade. I liked it except all the drinking and smoking. I thought Darry was so rude and mean to him. I hated him the whole time during the book.

I'm in 9th grade and we just finished the book, and we have to do a test on it , so we are watching the movie for a review of the book :P

I read it my 8th grade year and I fell in love with it!! We even saw the movie for it. Yeahm Patrick Swayze is hot :) haha. My english teacher was obsessed with the book and so she made it apart of her lesson plan. I'm so happy she did. :)

I read the Outsiders in high school, way back in the seventies. I loved it and couldn't believe it was written by someone my age. I never thought about it until now, but maybe that's when I got the writing bug.

I read it very recently in my grade 7 class I did not like it at first but after reading it a second time I saw all of the amazing messages in the story

I read this while I was in grade 8. I was in a split class of grade sevens and eights and we got into groups and all read different books. I was the only girl in my group with three grade seven boys but I think the ways that we could all connect to it was interesting. We had to make a short play of the book when we finished it which was hilarious, but I love that book so much from start to finish. It made me feel so many deep emotions, and if a book can do that to me, no matter what the emotions are; I respect the author.

Yeah it's good, sticks pretty close to the book too. But of coarse the book is always better :)

I read it of my own accord. It was a book I just came across, read the back cover, and thought it seemed like a possible worthwhile read. If I didn't like it, I would just put it down and forget about it. Little did I know that I would get hooked on reading The Outsiders. I don't read about gangs and social conflict and other similar subject matter, but this book changed my outlook on certain subjects. Not to mention, it definitely added flavor to my palette of book genres, which definitely needed a bit of a change-up. All I can say is - those who haven't read this, please give the book a chance. You never know if a story may touch you in a certain way. I know it definitely had a positive impact in my life. The only thing I regret about reading it is not reading it soon enough. I really connected with some of the characters. And I'll never forget to "stay gold".

I loved it. We had to read it in school too (nearly 15 years ago) and I still love it. It went in my time capsule when our family did one for 10 years later.

My brother read this in high school. I think it was year 8 or 9. I don't think he was that into it, but I read it when he had it from school, and I loved it. (I'm 3 years younger so I would have been about 12, 13? But I feel like it was before I started high school, so 12, I think. I must admit that as a kid I was totally in love with Dallas Winston. I loved the movie, too, although it wasn't as good as the book. But it is by Coppola...

I think it's a stand out for the gritty realism of poverty and the streets which is way more common now, but less so, I believe, in the era when it was written. It really shows what life is like for 'the other half'.

Also I think it's amazing that it was such a great YA novel in a time when YA was far less prevalent than it is today. Apparently her writing helped shape the YA classification.
