Jane Middle school. Watched the movie in class too. Reading class those 3 years really opened me up to the love of books and of course SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIRS!

It's one of the most memorable classes for me prior to college.

My class had to read this in 8th grade, and almost everyone loved it. We watched the movie afterwards but everyone thought it was a drag and didn't live up to the book.

message 256: by Ryan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ryan I was very bored in the beginning of the book but once Johnny stabbed one of the socs I started to get into it a little more. I thought the book was pretty good but did not live up to the hype it has be given. It was a good book but it is not a book that pops into my mind when asked by a friend "I am look for a good book. Do you have an suggestions?"

message 289: by Sara (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sara I had to read it for English class in the 6th grade but one of the parents complained that it was "bad" and doesn't want their child reading it so we had to stop reading it but by then I had already finished the book...all in all it was a good book :)

Bethany This year's summer reading!

Britannia Back in my day when I was in 7th grade(2004), it was one of the books we had to read. I chose to read it for my own personal pleasure, though. It was the first time I ever lied to my mum about what I needed 5 bucks for...that was the beginning stage of my bibliophilism. lol anywho, it's a fantastic book....okay okay fine...I'll admit it! I cried. Are you happy?? Lol
Fantastic book, and the movie was cool too. If you liked this then you should read That was Then, This is Now.

Sunsette I read it in the 6th grade. It's one of the few assigned books I actually enjoyed.

message 294: by Dolores (last edited Aug 10, 2013 06:07PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dolores I read it in High School, mostly because it was highly recommended by my best friends, not as an assignment for any class. Ironically, our friends identified moreso with the Greasers --not because we were gang members or gang affiliated, we weren't -- because the Socs, in the novel seemed to be fiscally and socially in some kind of elitist hierarchy; and we "secretly" thought of the cheerleaders, and snooty kids in our school as the Socs...haha! Wow, I hadn't thought of this novel in decades...need to make sure I added it to my goodreads list!

message 295: by Lynsey (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lynsey Read it for 8th grade. I'm surprised when I meet anyone who DIDN'T read "The Outsiders" for school. In keeping with tradition, I made it part of the 8th grade curriculum at my first teaching job...kids still appreciate it! Just goes to show...

message 296: by Emma (new) - rated it 2 stars

Emma I had to read this in grade eight. We watched the movie too. I wasn't that interested in it.

message 297: by Alex (last edited Aug 13, 2013 07:02AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alex I was supposed to read this in 7th grade, but I had forgotten about it. The 8th graders were reading it too and kept calling me a Soc during orchestra and I didn't know what that meant and eventually I just read it to find out. Then I found out we were going to try to read the book before the end of the school year. Luckily for me, we ran out of time, so those interested just read on their own. No papers on it! I was so happy.

message 298: by Emma (new) - rated it 2 stars

Emma I wish I didn't have to do any work on it. Copied soooo many notes. Public speaking on it and sooooo much more

message 299: by Alex (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alex That sucks.

message 300: by Emma (new) - rated it 2 stars

Emma I know, I didn't like the book. Everyone was saying how Johnny was sooo cute and how Ponyboy was so brave. It got annoying fast.
