I was gutted for the Irish. I really wanted them to beat the All Blacks...but then, as an Aussie, its hard not to wish teams to beat the All Blacks. Unless its the Poms, and then I we like to see the Kiwis beat the poms. Its complicated. I'm sure you understand. :)

Cheika is a whinger. Aggravates me everytime he blames this or that and even himself! But then doesn't step down. After that humiliating year of ours last year, he should have stepped down or been sacked. I was so mad at Rugby Australia for supporting him for another year.

Sent it again. Maybe you didn't get it the first time because we weren't friends on here. I don't know. I've given up trying to understand how GoodReads works.

I do hope you enjoy it, May. I know two people who have read it so far and they have said nice things about it, but as one is my flatmate and the other a cousin, they're not exactly unbiased.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I am reading Russka by Edward Rutherford. Taking a break, I looked at friends' reviews of his other books. Some liked London best. Did that book have a whore and a transvestite among its characters? This is possibly the most stupid question ever asked, and I ask it because I can see the characters in my mind and want to reread the book from whence they came. If it's not London, does anyone remember what book it might have been? Now, THAT was the most stupid question of the century!

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Man it is cold! - mid Jan temps. In fact last night set an all time low temp for Oct (the records only go back to 1874, so take that into account :)) 14 F at the SLC Airport. Hill AFB about 30 miles north was 9 F. The temps are supposed to set another record tonight. The cold snap is supposed to continue through the Weekend, so the Tick-or-Treaters will have to bundle up :)

The mountains have been snow capped for most of the month of Oct

To make one feel even colder, there is a spot in the northern mountains where noone but weather geeks go ,that was -37 F :)

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments Meanwhile, that cold Utah air is blowing down on us in California; the wind is strong but the air is cold!

message 16230: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) It is beautiful and sunny here in the Fraser Valley but lows tonight are 2 degrees (35F).

I went kayaking last weekend and was breaking ice on parts of the lake. Though Lightning Lakes is at a much higher elevation and it was -7 (20F) that morning. Absolutely beautiful in the cold and smow, but my fingers were freezing.

Terri | 19576 comments I would like some rain please. We're pretty over dthe constant drought. But if you're a person who the drought doesn't affect, then weather here in Queensland is perfect. Perfect temps and skies.

Andy | 1511 comments hope yer safe and well Terri, jus watching the Bush fires on sky news in NSW and Queensland

message 16234: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Hi Andy, thanks for asking.
We have been safe here on our farm, but the family farm was in danger for about four days. Family was all ready to fight it over there, water ready. But I kept telling Dad "it's a bushfire! They are going to force evacuation not let us stay and fight it." lol. But he had our water tank on the truck filled and ready to go.

That bushfire was touch and go. Only a couple kilometres away from the family farm. The Firefighters worked their butts off to try and stop it hitting the scrub on that range. If it made it into that scrub, there'd be no stopping it and that's when the farm would burn.
The Firies water bombed from planes and choppers for three days as well as fighting it on the ground, and it is still burning but it is contained now. And being monitored. No more air bombing required.

The fire that has threatened areas around Noosa are forty minutes drive from our place, so not a threat to us. We've been sitting in its smoke for days. So thick. You could see the smoke blowing around inside our house. That is a big fire that Noosa one.

message 16235: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments Thanks for letting us know, Terri. As you know, we have our fires here in California as well. Hair raising experience if you have to go thru it. Eucalyptus trees were imported here in the 19th century. I hate them. They’re nothing but a torch just waiting to go up when conditions are right. I made my husband cut down all of ours on our property; he still hangs on to one (grrr). Says it helps retain the soil on the slope. Grrrr!!!

message 16236: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Glad you both are safe today!! May the rains come soon!!

message 16237: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments It is awful when a species is imported and then is let go wild.
I guess it would still burn in California, but I imagine areas burn worse and become more volatile where there are lots of eucalyptus present!

Over here, it will burn even when the country is not eucalyptus country.
In tall timber country that has a short wet season where understory gets overgrown and then with severe drought keeping the rain away and not keeping that understory green, it goes whoompah!! with just a tiny spark to ignite it.

Its pretty full on. Over a million hectares and some fires will continue to burn for a month or more because they are in inaccessible mountain ranges o New South Wales and Queensland.

message 16243: by May (new)

That size is mindblowing & I had to get that sizesorted in my head & looking it up it's like the size of Cornwall & Devon on FIRE!! that's sizeable for us when the total size of UK is only 24M hectares

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I would like to wish all of my US friends here on A&M a very "Happy Thanksgiving!" For all non US friends, "Happy 28th of November!)

I would normally be putting up the outside Christmas lights this morning, but it has been snowing off an on since Sunday, and this morning I woke up to 6 inches of new HEAVY wet snow and the driveway. My back is killing me from shoveling it - I just might have to break down and actually buy a snow blower :D. Christmas decorating is in full swing - at least on the inside. The grand kids are here and are having a blast helping. I'm am smarter than to get on a snow covered roof to put up Christmas lights:), so that part of the decorating might not happen this year :( I should have done it Saturday - the weather was really nice.

Once again Happy Thanksgiving every one!

message 16246: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments Happy Thanksgiving to you, too. No snow here except in the mountains but plenty of rain. INT 15 closed due to snow. Must go the long way via 101 or INT 14 to back-way into Bakersfield. INT 15 still open (for now).
