I'm back.My time away from GR was compounded by me entering a writing competition. lol.
Just when my head wasn't filled with the stress of that thing I mentioned earlier that I don't want to bring up ;-)...I decided at the last minute to enter a comp.
I know I won't get on the longlist because the stuff I write is not a part of the current zeitgeist (not feminist, about Trump or other politics, not about refugees or the environment or indigenous issues), but the experience of knocking into shape the first 3 chapters of the novel I'm writing was a good experience.
I only decided a week and half before entries closed, that I was going to enter. So I had a lot of editing to do, as well as writing chapter breakdowns, synopsis and a short essay in time.
So, I went into a writing cocoon trying to get it all done before entries closed. I succeeded and that was last week.
Then my hubby went away for a couple weeks work and I was busy every day from doing all the farmwork and housework on my own.
No reading done at all for months!

I was only watching reruns of a show we have here called Cricket Legends. The interview was Brett lee. Oh boy, what a legend, he's got me all pumped for Ashes now.

Good luck with the competition!
September. :) So two months of being blissfully unaware of failure. haha. Where you can kid yourself in thinking maybe you will just get picked out of the masses. But I'm a realist. You look at previous years' winners and they are all on trendy topics like those mentioned in previous post.
Mine is an historical fiction set in the bush in 19th century Australia. A thriller. No refugees or feminists for miles around.
Terri, the competition motivated you to edit those chapters and prepare all that other material. That's a lot of valuable work for you as an author--in a sense you already have won yourself a prize. If you win the competition, that would be a bonus. Personally, I think Australia is fascinating. Your story sounds very cool. If I wanted to read about those other "trendy" topics you named, I could watch the news. Blecch! Give me a 19th-century Australian bush thriller ANY day.
Nicely done Terri, immersion is oft the way through a difficult time, gives us less time to sit n ponder i find. Hope the reading compy goes well & you get a pleasant surprise but that the Aussies get stuffed 4/0 (one being A-A due to rain of course!! lols)
Thanks for the positive vibes guys. :-)And thanks Betsy! Yeah, I'm with you. I'll take an Aussie bush thriller set in the 1800s over those trendy topics too. Its why we like the books we talk about in this group, I'd say, because its fun escapism form the politics, feminism and refugee traumas. I also read the newspapers to stay abreast of latest topics, I don't want them in my fiction.
Just catching up with this thread... yea, Terri!!! How incredible that you would put yourself out there! Wishing you the best!!!
I don't know the reason for this, but there have been something like 4 car fires reported on the freeways around here in the last month. Before this year I rarely heard of one. We've also had the freeway buckle twice from the heat. Also the bldg. I work in has been threatened by fire twice (one grass fire that came with in about 5 yrds and a welding fire on the inside of the bldg.that was quickly contained. Wild summer!Actually it has been a fairly cool summer this year. It didn't reach the 100s till this past week.

Some wild weather around the world. Guess we better get used to it. I'm afraid we went and ruined our one little planet.
Just finished watching a new mini-series, Lambs of God. Gack! Awful! I doubt it will air in the US but it will likely air in the UK at some stage. It was based on a book. Lambs of God Which must have been better than the tv adaptation in order to get the big budget.
If anybody reads the book, let me know if it is bad. The tv series had a plot so riddled with holes that its hard to believe the book wouldn't be too. Book is not something I would ever read. I'm just curious if it is equally bad.
Have taped LoG but not watched it yet...and your review does not fill me with hope. There has been a lot of hype and the visuals looked amazing in the ads, but I can't help but feel that, after seeing the ads, I already know the whole story.
Andy wrote: "c'mon....... not like Aussies to be shy...... lols"I already made my call... You cant spell smashes without ASHES. Barring weather, I predict a whitewash.
Ha Ha...... I predict England need a new test captain, too slapdash & reminds me a lot of Gower in his day as a failing batsman easily tempted to play a rash shot..... and he has Roy, Buttler & Bairstow in the same mould. Ali is shot in confidence & should never have been picked & whoever passed Anderson fit to play needs to be signing on this week..... complete shambles is the Test team. Needs a change in attitude as much as personnel & I would start with the captain if the rot continues.
As for the Aussies they rest Starc & hazelwood...... how fired up will they be to play the next match
Funny how it runs in cycles. England were unbeatable not so long ago - mind you, Australia were 8 - 122 in the first innings until Smith stood up. It could have gone either way.
Root alluded to how different it could all have been if they took those final 2 wickets quickly.... but not once did he talk of the poor batting, too insular for me..... it's also a team that is great when it's winning but stand up to them and they jus crumble unlike the odi team which has backbone and an inspirational captain..... the test team goes from the sublime to the ridiculous and needs an overhaul in personnel after being found out
Steve Smith sure has a point to prove. Very focused on his comeback. What that other goose is doing in the Australian team is beyond me. He is total rubbish but selectors keep thinking he's better than he is!? Whatevs.I can't belive we nabbed that first test.

Was excited for it. It was not what I expected. It was ok in first ep and downhill after that.
Have to say you've turned me off it a bit. I'll get to it but am approaching it with a sense of futility.
Sigh...I watched the first hour of Lambs of God and felt no inclination to watch the second hour. I simply have no interest in any of the characters, although I may persist a little longer until John Bell comes into the story.
It certainly isn't what the ads made it out to be, is it. I'd watched the show's trailer again. :) That was good. The mini series...blerk.
Well then, cricket fans, that second Ashes test did not go too well at the end (depending on which side you're on)... 1-1 now.
How is/was everyone's weekend? Get up to anything? Not much for me. A bit of farmwork and a bit of birdwatching. Not in that order.I'm sure someone, somewhere in our book group was doing something more exciting??
Cleaned a few drawers earlier this weekend. Found a gift certificate!! Just got back from a wonderful dinner!!! Thanks, Kids!!Meanwhile, Reading Bernard Cornwall’s VAGABOND, the Grail trilogy. Loving it!
I tore the muscle in between the ribs from front allllll the way around to the back on my right side, three weeks ago. Doc said that area could take a month or more to heal. Yippee! Was finally feeling better and then I had my 6 month old niece all Friday night and all Saturday. I had to lug her in her car seat and all her stuff up to my second floor apartment both days and back down again. Plus, she’s a little diva and wants to constantly be picked up and held so every time I set her down, she’d scream her little boujee head off and Auntie would have to bend down and pick her up again. Threw her into her stroller (which I also carried up and down my stairs) and walked the mile and a half to our little downtown area so at least she’d be in that all day and not me holding her. Smart in theory but not in execution. Walking uses all your core muscles. Needless to say, I could barely move today after finally feeling better after 3 weeks of pain (it felt like my abdomen and rib cage were being squeezed in a vise). I stayed in bed, stiff as a board, reading. Just took a shower so I can sleep in a bit tomorrow before work and I feel like someone kicked me in my side with pointy stiletto heels, onto a rocky highway, where I was run down by a Mac truck.
I need a weekend to recuperate from my weekend :(

Yum! That’s always a nice surprise when you find gift certificates you forgot about :)
Allie, I hurt just reading about your battered body. I truly hope you have something more than a hot shower to help ease the pain!!

Terri wrote: "Well then, cricket fans, that second Ashes test did not go too well at the end (depending on which side you're on)... 1-1 now.":) Exciting finish though..... near catches on the boundary jus dropping over for SIX!..... missed run-outs..... dropped catches...... having no referrals left when he's PLUMB LBW!!...... last man batting only facing like 17 balls & scoring 1 run in like a 70+ partnership....... fantastic nail biting ending after all the dross that had gone on before. Stokes & Archer are the only two deserving of a place in the 4th test.
The test reminded me a lot of 1981 Where Botham saved the match with his innings so that BIG BOB could skittle the Aussies with 8/43.... still remember it as a kid crowded around a small tranny radio with a few mates at school bunking after lunch & missing our first afternoon lesson :) our PE teacher was bunking with us lols

Get thee a girdle (or whatever the modern day equivalent is :) ) Allie to hold it all in place so you don't go straining it over n again, right orrible niggling injuries they can be :(

In a car accident Thursday evening. No one was hurt, thank goodness, but I'm still waiting on the insurance company and hoping to rent a car. I'm still shaken up mentally and will be until this whole thing is sorted out about my car.

Thank you. I hardly drive it and its been at least 7 years since a fender-bender. I hope I never have to go through these hoops again. All those companies do is tell you how much you can save on your premiums; they don't tell you about the hassle with claims.

Sorry to hear this Jane! It is a real pain dealing with the whole process of car accident repairs.

And cripes, Jane! What happened? They were at fault I guess or your insurance would be saying no way.
