I second an opinion on Larson. Thinking of adding it.

LOL! Then maybe Hugo isn't the best choice to start...you're brave, Marina!

Simona, I still have as a goal to read someday #3 or 4 of Elio Spazziano in Italian...

Asterix in Britain back to historical fiction for me after a bout of fantasy reading.... WHATTTTTT? :D
Just started
The Curse of Chalion / Lois McMaster Bujold. I think I'm really going to like this fantasy if the rest is as good as the first three chapters. Reads like it's set in a thinly disguised medieval Spain to me.
Red Land, Black Land: Daily Life in Ancient Egypt. In truth, I am giving it the grad student skin, but large parts of it are interesting enough to draw me in. It takes me to the Historian level on the History 2014 Challenge, so I am determined to finish, no matter what. But don't get me wrong: it's a good book, just a bit heavy for a Friday night.
I startedIn the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin last night - so far so good - about 50 pages in
started another Pliny the Younger mystery:
The Blood of Caesar: A Second Case from the Notebooks of Pliny the Younger / Albert A. Bell Jr.
Jesse is reading a good book. It took me several days after I finished to really appreciate the book.
I think it would be a spoiler. The book was not easy to read because I do not understand warfare. The author showed that both sides are human. Keep reading. THE NIGHT I DANCED WITH ROMMEL (no author/book feature) I would recommend. I don't have 'thing' for Rommel, but those two books showed the measure of the man.
I'll have to check it out. I believe it should run rather smooth for me as my favorite titles deal with warfare as a main theme a lot of the time. I am also partial to Pressfield regardless of the topic. Thank you for the heads up though. I'll make sure to let you know my review of it.

In the interest of fessing up, I have finished Wedding Night by Sophie Kinsella & The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever by Julia QuinnI've also finished
1984,
The Mormon People: The Making of an American Faith,
Cold Fire and
The City.I'm currently reading The Proud Tower: A Portrait of the World Before the War 1890-1914 by Barbara W. Tuchman and Lark Rise to Candleford by Flora Thompson
And then I'm thinking of reading
and a whole lot of others.... :)
Dawn, is the book on the Mormons the one you said gives a balanced presentation? I'd like to read a balanced book on the. Mormons.
Yep, that's the one. Most of the book was very good at being impartial. The history from the 1950's forward was a bit rah rah but that was a pretty small part of the book. Very informative. I'm very partial to this religious history stuff. I am trying to decide on another "newish" religion to read up on.
How bout Scientology? Is that a religion?
My definition of religion would include it. Though I think more on the cultish side of things. That is a very interesting idea. Now if you just find a good book for me Derek??
Definitely cultish. It's so bizarre, it interests me. Haven't read it yet, but there's this Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief
I've seen their headquarters in Hollywood. The whole damn thing is a cult of the personality or L. Ron Hubbard.
Hahaha! No doubt about that!
My local library even has that book, I'm going there tomorrow. So I'll have to look and see how difficult it is!
Of Battles Past by Bryn Hammond, 12th Century Mongolia. I was lucky to hear about it here when she offered it for free on Amazon. It's an interesting read.

Can't wait to start reading books with my boys when the material is deeper than green eggs n ham!
1356 by Bernard Cornwell. Also 500 pages on The Whooper Swan (I am seriously impressed that GR has an entry for this book). The possibility of a person who can write 500 pages on a single bird species is rather alarming—even to me, a career academic—but I certainly am glad that such a person exists.
I picked up
Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief from the library (thanks to Derek for the rec). I have started and finished it within 24 hours. Really good, quick read & very interesting.
