I second an opinion on Larson. Thinking of adding it.

Dawn (caveatlector) Oh, defeintiely move Larson close to the top of the TBR!! It's a great book!

Jane | 3480 comments Just started The Curse of Chalion (Chalion, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold The Curse of Chalion / Lois McMaster Bujold. I think I'm really going to like this fantasy if the rest is as good as the first three chapters. Reads like it's set in a thinly disguised medieval Spain to me.

C.P. Lesley (cplesley) | 564 comments Red Land, Black Land: Daily Life in Ancient Egypt.

In truth, I am giving it the grad student skin, but large parts of it are interesting enough to draw me in. It takes me to the Historian level on the History 2014 Challenge, so I am determined to finish, no matter what. But don't get me wrong: it's a good book, just a bit heavy for a Friday night.

Jesse Killing RommelStarting this today after finishing The Judas Strain by James Rollins last night

message 4320: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Jesse is reading a good book. It took me several days after I finished to really appreciate the book.

message 4321: by Jesse (new)

Jesse Uh oh, Why did it take you a few days to appreciate it? Or will that answer be a spoiler?

message 4322: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I think it would be a spoiler. The book was not easy to read because I do not understand warfare. The author showed that both sides are human. Keep reading. THE NIGHT I DANCED WITH ROMMEL (no author/book feature) I would recommend. I don't have 'thing' for Rommel, but those two books showed the measure of the man.

message 4323: by Jesse (new)

Jesse I'll have to check it out. I believe it should run rather smooth for me as my favorite titles deal with warfare as a main theme a lot of the time. I am also partial to Pressfield regardless of the topic. Thank you for the heads up though. I'll make sure to let you know my review of it.

message 4330: by Portia (new)

Portia Dawn, is the book on the Mormons the one you said gives a balanced presentation? I'd like to read a balanced book on the. Mormons.

message 4331: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Yep, that's the one. Most of the book was very good at being impartial. The history from the 1950's forward was a bit rah rah but that was a pretty small part of the book. Very informative.

I'm very partial to this religious history stuff. I am trying to decide on another "newish" religion to read up on.

message 4332: by [deleted user] (new)

How bout Scientology? Is that a religion?

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Derek wrote: "How bout Scientology? Is that a religion?"

Not in my world view. :p

message 4334: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) My definition of religion would include it. Though I think more on the cultish side of things.

That is a very interesting idea. Now if you just find a good book for me Derek??

message 4335: by [deleted user] (new)

Definitely cultish. It's so bizarre, it interests me. Haven't read it yet, but there's this Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief

Portia I have that brick, Derek! I am expecting it to be a quick read despite its gazillions of pages

Dawn (caveatlector) My local library even has that book, I'm going there tomorrow. So I'll have to look and see how difficult it is!

Betty (betty30554) Of Battles Past by Bryn Hammond, 12th Century Mongolia. I was lucky to hear about it here when she offered it for free on Amazon. It's an interesting read.

message 4348: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Lesley (cplesley) | 564 comments 1356 by Bernard Cornwell. Also 500 pages on The Whooper Swan (I am seriously impressed that GR has an entry for this book).

The possibility of a person who can write 500 pages on a single bird species is rather alarming—even to me, a career academic—but I certainly am glad that such a person exists.

message 4349: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I picked up Going Clear Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief by Lawrence Wright Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief from the library (thanks to Derek for the rec). I have started and finished it within 24 hours. Really good, quick read & very interesting.
