It is just a hold-over from the war. For the most part, it is a tease, as if they (Northerners) are some how lacking in gentility, since the South was so well known for its culture, manners and charm (if you can call slavery charming). In actuality, the South was nearly destroyed in the Civil War and left families (both black and white) destitute for decades and decades.

I'm in southern hemisphere (Australia ) and only reading my second book that happens down here. Mateship With Birds
Midu, have you read anything by Isabel Allende? She has several that are set in South America, which would definitely fit your southern hemisphere requirement. As for March 9, that is the BEST DAY IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!! I may be biased cause it's my birthday ;)
There are a lot of Harlequins set in Australia if you're interested in something relatively short and contemporary. I haven't read any in awhile, but I enjoyed a lot of Emma Darcy's books. And March suits me fine for Caressed By Ice.
Thanks, Susan but I just wanted to fit a book I had already read in that category..not happening! hehe
Okay, that's enough of a consensus for me. Then I'll update the "buddy read" calendar. I'm off to take a friend to the hospital, but I should be around tomorrow.
