Okay, so I have tried reading Wuthering Heights at least 5 times and can never make it past the early intoductions in the book. I am wondering if those of you who love this book have had the same problem and I just need to power through it or if I should be in love with it from the beginning.

Please try again and read the whole book. From when I first read it I have never found another book that compares. The sheer brutality that will make you cringe and the depth of love through life and death that will touch your heart and give you hope of eternal love is well worth it. The fact that this book has surpassed time must beckon you to read it.

Don't hate a book because it's challenging. God help us if EVERY book was shovelled to us in easy peasy pieces because that would be so fricking tedious. (See Carlos Fuentes' "Terra Nostra", a labyrinthine and occasionally baffling 900-page slab which more than justifies a bit of patience because it's stunning if you can hack it!) Finish the damn thing and then hate it if you must, fair enough, but no points are awarded for having a view when you walk out before the lights go up.

Wuthering Heights is a wonderful book. The first part may be hard to get through because EB is setting up the telling of the story through the housekeeper Nellie. She has to have someone to tell the story to, so we have the tenant who gets stranded at the Heights. I think the big mistake that some people make with this book is trying to make Heathcliff the hero. He isn't. He is an anti-hero, too damaged by his early childhood to be capable of empathy. The true hero is Hareton whose childhood mirrors Heathcliff's but he is saved by Cathy's daughter's faith in him. The contrast between the two generations is the main point of the book.

The first part is a bit difficult to read, because the book has a rather complex story which forms the framework for the actual plot. Moreover, when English is not your native language, it can be hard to understand.

Nevertheless, this book is awesome! I never really liked any of the characters, but I loved them for the insight they gave me into human nature. I loved them for their dynamics and their passions and for their liveliness. They were not made to be liked, they were made to make you think. This book is not a comfortable read, but let's be honest, comfortable reads seldom make you grow.

At first, i found it quite tough to read it , because i have never read any YA/ Classic like Wuthering Heights. Getting past the introduction was a challenge of its own , i dare say. But as the story started to proceed, so as my understanding of it more and more with a clear perspective. Emily Bronte has created a different world, something we can never expect. When i first heard about it (through Twilight) , i was under the impression of it being some cheesy love story with happy ending or perhaps, miserable? But , Gosh, the story something out of 'Unexpected Box.' The way everything turned out, by the end of the book, left me breathless and utterly shocked. You know, 'A book is awesome when it makes u pause just to say, "OH MY GOD"!!' and that happened with me innumerable times.

Some people may not like it. Everyone thinks differently and I'm not judging anyone. But if given a try and some thought to this lovely writing of Emily Bronte, then they r sure going to be surprised.

For those who find the book difficult to read, I have a suggestion: go to your library and take out an audio version (be sure to get one that's unabridged). I recently listened to the one narrated by Janet McTeer (a brilliant actress) and David Timson, and couldn't put it down.

I have to say that the very beginning is very difficult, particularly when we see Catherine's ghost, but the rest is much easier. Two pieces of advice: 1. Force yourself through that part and enjoy the rest. 2. If it's especially hard, consider Sparknotes. I do NOT mean reading those instead of the book, but rather as a guide through the confusing parts. Read it as you read the difficult parts so you know what's going on.

I loved WH only at the end. I found it challenging and I agree with Amber. Vampire Queen, it does take a lot of concentration. It did take me a while, but I think - not only because its a classic - that is worth reading.

Nevertheless, the story is a bit hard to follow certain times, and some passages are not really necessary. But I still think that the ending is worth the whole book. A simple, but satisfying ending.

i like classic literature but this book pissed me off. not because of the huge moral character flaws of almost every character. no thats my favorite thing about it, but i had to skip whole pages because i could not for the life of me understand what that guy was saying (i think his name was jacob or something. its been a while since i read it.)i don't think that was even english. it was like he was speaking ancient greek while having a seizure.

I love this book. Read it in my college days, since then I've read many books...... but nothing stands anywhere closer to it. A masterpiece.........I was absolutely fascinated to read what made Heathcliff feel comforted in Cathy's grave.
The lines "Nelly... I'm Heathcliff..." still haunt me.
Still exploring the depths and intensity of that raw and wild love story.

It is very challenging, but it's soooooo worth it!!!

Funny story. I bought mum the movie for mother's day a few years back because I knew she liked Jane Austen and stuff. She said she'd never read the book, but it was on the shelf. So I figured I might as well read it. I. HATED. IT. Almost every second was close to tortue, but 'm kinda stubborn so I persisted. It's hard to explain why, but when I finally finished and got over my little victory dance, I thought "I can actually see why it isa classic".
So, my conclusion: a very good book to have read. A horrible book to actually read. Go figure :D

I recently finished reading it on the third try; I had to draw diagrams on post-its to figure out who married whom. .... Did anyone have trouble with the names?

It took me 3 years to finally finish this book- I had to force myself to finish it to be honest. It was beautifully written and I loved the darkness of it by the end, but it was so hard for me to get in to.

I didn't find it a tough read. I absolutely love this book. It'll be worth it if you push yourself to read it.

This is my favorite book. I always find that people love it or hate it. There seems to be no in-between. Other than Joseph's dialect, I don't find it difficult to read. I can't even say why I love it so much, I have always been very drawn to it, and I think Bronte is just an incredible writer. I think I have always liked the fact the characters seem very human and not perfect and well, actually, pretty screwed up... Makes them kind of easier to relate to... but for whatever reason, I just love this book to death, and no other could ever replace it in my opinion. I think alot of people also don't like the characters, but you don't have to like them to appreciate the book and grow from reading it. Stick with it and hopefully you will get something out of it. Gotta give it a chance :)

not really i love it. but it does get kinda confusing with the way the timings are, like how they skip around.

For a while before reading this book, the literarily technique of starting a story and then doubling back and starting the 'real' story through a narrator, had been a pet peeve. This made Wuthering Heights a tough read for me as well. I think i was on the third or fourth chapter before I started to realize I was in love with it, and fascinated with each character, and every event pulled at my heart strings. Now this book is one of my favorites, and I've come to appreciate the structure more now, that I am re-reading it for the third time.

I truly think you must have gone through enough crap in life to understand the fundamentally flawed exaggerated nature of the characters. I've read WH at least half a dozen times since I was 12. Sometimes I put it down midway through, vowing never to pick it up again. Ultimately, I'm so glad it keeps sucking me in to its despairing vortex of passionate hate. The characters are us, complete with love, hate, bad choices, conceit, innocence, stupidity, judgment.

Pick it up again later in life and it will reveal itself to you. I'm 45 now and just beginning to understand.

My favourite book and I own over 15 copies of it. One is from 1901 and I have it in 6 languages as everywhere I go I bring home a new copy as a souvenir. This book is amazing and I never, ever thought i'd like it.

To be honest, I think I have only actually read anything Joseph says about twice because the dialect is so difficult for me to engage with. When I picked this up it took me around 8 hours to read in the end and I was in tears most of the way through. Lockwood is extremely pompous and anoying, but push through, the naration by Nelly Dean is wonderful so once you get there yo'll be fine.

Minority Opinion:

The beginning is basically the same as the rest of the book. (Awesome, imho!) If you don't like the start, then save yourself the time and just put the book down.

I began the book not expecting much because I generally hate classic literature with a burning passion. It's true, the beginning is boring and it's insanely hard to understand. But then I Wikipediaed the plot and read it again, and it turned out to be an amazing book that was much easier to understand. I personally believe it's one of those books that you have to relate to at least a little to appreciate, but once you do, it gives a whole new level of insight that I would never find anywhere else.

I read this book and hated it. I could not see what all the hype was all about. And didn't understand why some of the characters had the same name. I think it was a waste of time but I decided to finish it anyway.

Honestly, if there's a book that I really want to read, but can't make it past a difficult beginning, I read a synopsis of it. That way, I have a roadmap to follow.

I love Wuthering Heights, and its the creepy beginning. It's true, however, that the story really gets going once you start to read about the relationship between all the children, and Heathcliff subsequent "adoption".

An overrated snoozefest.

I loved this book. Yes, it is difficult to get through at times but I feel it is the story of Emily Bronte's own life and love struggles.

I've loved Wuthering Heights since I read it in the 5th grade and it's my favorite book of any that I've ever read, but there are times when I read it and want to throw it across the room and then light it on fire. It's just the kind of book that you either love it, hate it. If you can't get through the intro then just skip to the text, the first couple times I read it, my copy didn't have any introductions and then later I got a copy that had one and I found that it was a nice addition to the text and it lent it a different perspective, but wasn't completely necessary.
If it's a book you really want to read but can't seem to get into, maybe pick up a copy of Cliff's Notes or find an abridged version.

It took me forever to read.
I never finished it properly until I had to study it for a literature class I took at college.

I think you just have to persevere and get through all the boring stuff at the start. It gets better.

This is one of those books that I love to hate.

I loved this book, it took about 3 hours to read. If it's not catching your interest just put it down and read something else. There's no pont in torturing yourself.

This book was a tough read, but one that I read. and am glad that I finished it. Some parts are brutally honest and frank and raw, but that is what makes the book so hard to read.

I read Wuthering Heights in my teens 40 plus years ago and consider it the finest book ever written. It haunts me still after all these years. Stick with it.

I was unsure about the book the whole time I was reading it. I felt like I was wasting my time. But as the book progresses I feel like it gets more interesting and I started caring for the characters more. When I finished it I was glad that I stuck with it. But the beginning was incredibly boring!

i never found it hard, it was a stupendous story of nasty bastards being brutal to each other. brilliant dark fun

I don't remember finding it difficult to read, but it certainly was a dark story. Not my usual cup of tea but glad I read it though.

I hadnt really a hard time reading the book.
The only one I had a hard time understanding was Joseph XD
But I really loved the book <3

To be honest...I don't recall. I read it in high school and just loved it ever since. But if you love the idea of nasty people being horrible to themselves for no reason then push on.

A challenge indeed. I didn't think it was very good - I was expecting the moor to play a bigger part in the narrative, but I never really got a sense of the unforgiving landscape, just that it was a bit windswept and foggy sometimes...! The characters are not only unlikeable (though I know that's probably the idea) but badly drawn and more like caricatures. The narration is bizarre (am I reading a narrative by Nelly or a narrative of a narrative by the tenant?!) which makes the book even more heavy-going. I did feel that there was good pathos in the chapter where Linton is taken to live with Heathcliff, but that was the only bit which stood out for me.

I read the book and it confused me in agood way ..
I was convinced that love and hate are on the same line but the go in opposite directions but still the same line when u love someone so much the only equivalent passion is to hate him with the same passion ...
I loved the book it's creepy but it's part of it's charm the Bronte sisters are amazing

I wasn't in love with the book, but I actually enjoyed the beginning the most. If you're really intent on reading this, perhaps you should just push through it. Honestly, the beginning is important to understanding all the drama later.

Gah this book was hard to read. It takes SO much concentration it's confusing. You can't think while you read it or you'll miss things. Took me a bit to actually read it and then watched the movie and should've just watched the movie.
