I don't think that's necessarily true, I first read WH when I was 10 years old and it was my favorite book then and still is at 26. How much could I have possibly gone through at that age? I do agree with you though that the characters are us. To this day I don't think I've ever read another book where so many characters had so many flaws that were at the core of their being. For me I believe Hareton to be the only really innocent victim of every other characters selfish motives, Heathcliff especially. I once read someones description of WH, and while it was as a comparison to Jane Eyre, I still find the description fitting. WH is a book about beautiful people doing ugly things.
