Twilight-haters: Why So Vicious?

Okay, so Twilight is no _________________ (enter your favorite classic YA fiction here).

But I don't understand all the criticism. It is bordering on the obsession-like behavior that you so callously attribute to the Twilight-Lovers.

So, she isn't the best author, and her books have typos, grammatical errors, run-on sentences, etc.

Well, I never noticed too many. I was too busy alternating between hating Bella's stubborness, or crying (let's just say I'm hormonal), because of the heart-wrenching emotion the books evoke.

Also, what is all this business about her books NOT having a plot? They have a plot, a story goal, a story idea, conflict, resolution, colorfully-detailed characters, and a climax. She is no J.K. Rowling (who I believe to be a genius), but come on, her first novel was written and published within 6 MONTHS.

The plot is very evident to me: Bella falls in love with Edward and is willing to sacrifice everything in her life to be with him for eternity, even if that means she has to die (become a vampire, immortal).

I just don't understand how Bella is a bad role model, either. She is a virgin at 18, in this day and age, that is a miracle in itself, and she doesn't have sex until AFTER marriage. (I couldn't stand Bella's ridiculous attitude about receiving gifts, etc from Edward, and found myself slamming the book down a few times exclaiming, "what a self-indulgent BRAT!" or "Bella is the WORST girlfriend in the world. She does NOT deserve Edward. Edward needs someone more like....me." ;)) Other than her attitude sucking, she is like most young girls who fall in love fast and hard, BUT she doesn't go from guy to guy like most teen girls, and even admitted in the books that she was using Jacob to get over Edward, which he KNEW and accepted, by the way.

She also planned to go to elite colleges to finish her education, being that this was the way Carlisle's family avoided suspection, so we know that she was going to college, stay married to the same man forever, live as a "vegetarian", so we know she didn't plan to murder her food.

Is it just the (feminist) idea that women aren't supposed to NEED a man to be happy? Isn't that what SOME of you find distasteful? Well, I don't need my husband to be happy, but I am happier being married to a man I love. He brightens my existence with companionship, laughter, love, romance, and, yes, sex.

I can't have all that with a woman or by myself....

Anyway, I liked the Twilight series well enough, and fell in love with Edward, (He tended to get on my nerves for putting up with Bella's mood swings and childishness so patiently, though). I miss the chivalry of men from the days of old. Holding open your car door, helping you put on your sweater, being sensitive to your needs, etc. They just don't make them like that anymore.

You are lucky if you get to ride in the front seat the morning after you have just given your virginity to some unworthy immature jerk who, for weeks, told you he loved you, and woo-ed (played) you for the fool you are. But I digress...

As for Breaking Dawn, I hated both names for the baby (ugh... Carlie would have been so much sweeter, since Bella lived with her Dad, who loved her beyond words, who she took after, and who we, the reader, came to know more intimately than her flighty mother, Renee) and was extremely disappointed in all of the drama-queenish behavior (by Edward, especially) in the previous books over Bella becoming a vampire, if, according to BD, it was just the best thing since sliced-bread (cliche, so-sue-me).

Just like someone else wrote Bella became a "Supermodel-like Goddess" with superpowers and was happier than she had ever been, which just makes all the angst and twisted emotion in the 3 previous books seem like a huge waste of energy, emotion, tears, time, etc.

Needless to say, I wasn't happy with the way SM ended the series. It had so much potential to be great, typos, run-on sentences, grammatical errors, and all.

I was in love with Twilight and Edward Cullen once...I had much difficulty when I read New Moon and Eclipse because they didn't have GREAT stories in them, to be honest, they were boring.

But what happened in Breaking Dawn, it was really too much to take in. It made the whole series look stupid.

SM presented Volturi (I'm sorry I've forgotten if it's the actual spelling) as something super-dangerous and we got the image as they-will-come-and-rip-your-head-off-your-body-if-you-don't-obey-them. But SM literally made a fool of them in BD. Decisions that were taken by them were said to be 'irreversible', yet they swallowed whatever bullshit the Cullens had to offer. All they did was talk and comment and the Volturi did what? "CHANGED THEIR MIND"...so easily? If so, why couldn't the Cullens save Bree Tanner? They culd just have another meeting and save that poor girl.

I would like 'Twilght' if the movies hadn't come out, the first one was actually good, if you put Robert Pattinson and his 'Constipated look' AND Kristen's awkward stuttering. It felt like they only started acting and need to be taught much more. I never understood why they acted like that, they seemed very good in Goblet of Fire/Zathura.

I wouldn't dislike 'Twilight' so much if I hadn't read 'The Vampire Diaries' recently. I was so angry at SM!
1. 4 books in the series
2. 'Vegetarian' vampires
3. Love story
4. Love triangle
5. A werewolf named Jacob
6. Revenge of Victoria (read VD book 3: The Fury to understand this point)
WHAT ARE ALL THESE? CO-INCIDENCE?

Ok, now let's suppose we all like vampires and therefore we like 'Twilight'. But I'd like to remind that trying to change tradition doesn't help always.

1. We fell in love with Edward because he was a vampire and had all the superpowers that a man needs to have to save her lady. Lets suppose Edward is NOT a vampire and think how Twilight would be.
Edward could be great of course, but I'd never like to have someone like him in my life, no definitely not. What the girls are seeing is that he's a vampire n he's got superpowers n all those stuff. but honestly if any girl ever happens to come across a guy who's Edward Cullen and a normal guy, girls would call him creepy. All he does is care about Bella n tailing her about everywhere like people don't have anything else to do in their life. If something like that happened to me in my real life I'd probably think that my bf's suspecting that I'm cheating on him n so he's keeping an eye on me...so I'd definitely say that the book's been written perfectly with all those things put together, but Edward is not sufficient and he's not perfect. He'd make an awful boyfriend!

2. And talking about werewolves, is Jacob even a real werewolf? Werewolves are said to lose control over themselves when they see the moon...they can't shift on their own accord.

3. 'Vampires' without fangs...goes against the tradition again...makes me say that these vampires are not man enough! The only time I've heard of those fangs is when Bella is about to give birth to her child and Edward gets his fangs out for the delivery...but throughout the rest of the stories...BLANK!

4. OK lets suppose they have teeth and those are venomous too! And this is just a fantasy story and they are imaginary. BUT, fangs are what make a vampire different from all other species, or 'complete', to be more appropriate. Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' or shows like 'True Blood' or 'Underworld Trilogy' movie shows what actual vampires are like. That's how we've always known vampires as, dangerous and ferocious.

5. Lets suppose the Cullens are like this is because this is the 'nice' part of the cullens! They are mostly human. That's why people like them even though they are vampires.
BUT when someone says 'Bull', we expect to see a bull, if the guy brings a 'Cow' and put extra horns and does some implantation to make it look like a bull, then we're supposed to point that out. we shouldn't go liking it just because it's tame and it won't come hurling towards us. And I don't see a reason why this matter shouldn't be laughed at, or pitied. Vampires that SPARKLE and don't have fangs. HILARIOUS!

6. Lets suppose vampire has always been an imaginary thing. Those other vampires that we read stories of were also made up by someone. So SM has a right to create her own type of vampires. That's why people liked it because it's different.
OK FINE! Vampires are imaginary...BUT why break the tradition? You see 'phoenix' is also myth, but if I make them belch 'ice cubes' instead of 'fire', that wouldn't be nice, would it???
Vampires have been in consideration even before our birth, maybe centuries ago, and the lot are same, well it's only Meyer who made it look like some sort of stupid joke.

These are some of the few reasons I dislike Twilight for. Just because SM showed us how TAME and GENTLE vampires can be doesn't make us forget what we've learnt about vampires since our childhood. If there were any real vampire in the world and had read Twilight Saga, s/he'd probably committed suicide.

We don't want sparkling or stalker vampires. A bold, evil and traditional vampire is just fine with us. We want to breathe, not get trapped with our freakish vampire boyfriend. Don't forget that Damon from Vampire Diaries was no less than a Devil himself. He stole, cheated, killed innocents and fought his own brother. Still all these couldn't stop us from falling in love with him. Whereas Edward only irritated us!

It's alright if some people don't like twilight, but they need to debate in a nice way, like an agree to disagree kind of thing. For example, I don't like Glee, but I don't go around saying "Glee sucks, I hate Glee" or any of that. There's a way to stand up for what you like while still being respectful.

I think we get vicious because every other book that we find great has to be compared to Twilight or be belittled by it. It seems like Twlight has copyrighted everything young adult now. I don't hate Twilight, but I do get irritated with the fact that it pops up everywhere I go. And I've read all of the Twilight books and after having read them I came up with the conclusion that I didn't think it was very good.

Personally I loved the series, I know everyone has different opinions but the twilight haters are so harsh. We understand you don't like it, but why do you feel like you have to bring everyone down with your negative attitude. It gets really annoying...I hate it when people complain..okay I am kind of hypocritical because I complain sometimes but some twilight haters go a little to far... I feel that if I like twilight I'm going to get jumped or something. So to all you haters out there: BACK OFF.

I don't hate twilight. I have read the books many times and genuinely enjoyed them. I hated the first movie, though. For obvious reasons.
No, Twilight is not a classic. I like Harry potter much better than i do twilight.
Twilight has good and bad things about it.
For example:
I like the intense emotion
I like how relatable Bella is

I don't think there is anything wrong with the fact that the vamps go against tradition. It takes some imagination to create a different character like that.
The writing isn't the best but the story IS engaging enough to make people want to continue reading the series to see what happens.

The first movie did ruin it a bit for me.
When I read the first book, it was long before the movie happened, and before it got such a huge fanbase. When people got all obsessed with it, it did make me drift away from it. But as the hype has decreased, my interest has returned some.

Everyone has their own opinion on the matter obviously. There is nothing wrong with loving it, and there is nothing wrong with hating it. Just as long as people understand that we all have different views and opinions.
For me, personally, as much as I do enjoy the twilight books, they don't come even CLOSE to the awesomeness that is harry potter. But thats just my opinion.

The only thing about the characters that annoyed me, was:
-Edwards possessiveness
-Bella's refusal to accept gifts (WTF was with that? I thought it was mean for the people who care for her)
-How Bella isn't really a good girlfriend
-How she led Jacob on so damn much

Thats about it. Well, that's the only thing that really annoyed me about the books.

The thing is, I dont think people are very mature about this. We like what we like. If you dont like it, don't judge the people that do.

Ok Twilight sucks because its so WRONG I mean Edward and Bella have a baby. . .VAMPIRES DON'T NEED TO REPRODUCE THEY'RE DEAD!!!! Who wouldn't want to "make love" to a corpse? And even if they needed more vampires they would just need to bite someones neck and thats it. Plus the writing is TERRIBLE I couldn't get past the first book because it was that bad!!! Argue with me if I am wrong but Twilight SUCKS!

HEY! We can all have our own opinions!

BTW i loved the series.

It shouldn't be about trash tallking or annoying people, these are supposed to be discussions where people write their views and listen to others. I started the feminist thread because it another interesting way to look at it, not to put people down who do or do not like the book. It is not fair to simply say something is 'just a book', 'stop taking it seriously', it's just another way of seeing things. If you only take books for their surface value then they become boring! People are allowed to disagree with you! So long as they can write a coherent reason why, and aren't just a troll stirring things.

I have read all the books and seen all the films- I hate Twilight because it is not well written, anti-feminist and is very shallow.
It has NO strong female characters whatsoever:
1. None of the women have jobs
2. All of the women want nothing more then to have children
3. Bella is content to lie around and wait for Edward to save her (there was the pepperspray, but it was a short-lived failure)
4. All Esme wants to do is cook for and look after everyone
It is also so shallow- Bella and Edwards 'love' was all about appearance, all Bella said about him was 'his eyes were dazzling' or 'his bronze hair glittered with raindrops' or 'he looked like a statue of Adonis!'
What about his great sense of humor or how friendly he was? Apparently to Bella he was nothing but a gorgeous man with the personality of the statue he looked like!
In four books, we get as much character depth as the cartoons in the newspaper!
This is why I don't like Twilight.

I don't like when people are ridiculed for liking something. Everyone has different opinions on everything and they are entitled to that opinion, just don't be nasty and belittle someone whose opinion differs to yours. Think about it...it's a book series! It's not like you're a fan of the KKK or something! It's a teenage book series...chill!! If you don't like the books then go and comment on a book you DO like and save your energy on chatting about that.

On the other hand, I do find fans of these kinds of popular series (Harry Potter, The Hunger Games , but in particular Twilight) can take things a bit too seriously. I'm not saying all fans but the obsessive fans. I am an absolutely avid fan of Harry Potter but I don't attack someone just because they don't like the series. I love Twilight as well but I do find for some reason that Twihards in particular seem to get vicious about defending this series. It's a book, it's not the end of the world if somebosy doesn't like it.

I just didn't like the characters or the overall plot. SM can write very gracefully though. I just wish she'd put a little more planning into the books instead of coming up with stuff on the spot.

because they are so sick and tired of hearing people run their mouths about something that really isn't all that. it gets out of hand. plus, you guys are REALLY scary. the things you say about the characters as if they are real. and you treat them like real people. you scare people away from this awesome series.

Because Twilight sucks

I am one of the haters, and I hate it passionately. But this is not just because of the books I have friends who are obsessed with it and think it is flawless, the hype and fan adoration that goes along with the series is annoying plus I also studied the series at university so the more you dissect these books eg, the characters, language, structure, themes and values the more you realise about it, for me that equalled realising how terrible it was.

On the upside they got kids reading so thats always a plus

I'm an English teacher and have read a lot of books. I know the writing isn't literary and won't be a classic, but the story kept me interested and drawn in. Each book was a page-turner - I was able to read both BD and Eclipse in one sitting. If the story was so horrible, I would have stopped reading as I have with many books. Every book has grammatical errors left in - that's more the fault of the copy editor rather than the author. Some of you seem to forget that fact. Any typos and grammar errors don't belong to SM alone - editors and copy editors dropped the ball too. People just want to hate because SM got a "fairy tale." Jealousy maybe? There are way way more "starving" writers than writers like SM who became multi-millionares in a matter of years and 5-6 books.

Haidi Hooray for someone finally bringing up the point that grammatical errors and typos are not SM fault alone if at all. Well said.

We don't hate the books so much as the creepy obsession of the fans. And then when we read the books to see what all the buzz is about, we're like, "wtf, this isn't even that good. Actually, it's kind of terrible, because of x, y, and z..." Cue more annoyance with obsessed fans. I read Twilight before it was popular, liked it, and then basically forgot about it before it became a huge deal. It was kind of a fluff book, you know? All that angst. All those adjectives...gah...

I was never a Hater, more of just "Wow, that kid stuff sure is making that author rich." I simply wasn't interested until a year or so ago a co-worker pushed the first one on me... she being the opposite of a tween scream fan I decided to give it a try. I actually liked it (much more so than the movies, I ended up giving those a try as well), and finished with breaking dawn a month or two ago. Nothing super awesome, but good reads for sure!!

I loved all the books -Eclipse was my favourite one though- they're all so good. I'm only 14 so I can't really claim that I know that much about life. But these books are some of my favourites. I love Edward, Bella does get on my nerves when she moans about gifts. And Jacob is annoying when he's trying to make Bella fall for him. But needless to say I was sad when she realised she did have feelings for him. Each of the characters are different and together they anrich the books. SM is a new author so there are going to be mistakes. But I'd love to see the haters write books with such passion and have it published without any gramatical errors. Some of my friends hate this story with a passion, but I brush aside there snide comments (Because lets face it, NOT everyone is going to like the same books.) and just get on with my life. When I mention them they try to follow what I'm on about, sweet really. But they suck it up when I beg them to come to see the films with me. I hope they stick to BD strictly, they don't shange to much. :D

I think it could be because, even though I don't like to admit it, hating things can be really, really fun. It's actually quite entertaining to rage at something, especially a something that a lot of people like a little too much. Twilight's just an easy target, because, whatever your opinion of the series, there is quite an amount to hate about it, and a lot of things in it that get some people angry.
The books contain what many people, myself included, would think of as terrible messages that are being sent to young people. It's easy to get annoyed about things that you think are negatively influencing others and changing them to go against what you think is right.
And some people just feel compelled to hate whatever's popular at that moment. It's slightly silly, but there are plenty who do it. Other's just follow the people who said it was bad in the first place because they don't want to look unintelligent, or like they have bad taste, or whatever else. Liking Twilight doesn't mean that, of course, but there are some generally angry and bitter people out there who think it does.

Basically, hate is kind of a strong emotion, and if somebody feels it about a work of fiction, or the influence that it may be having on others, they're going to talk about it. Probably a lot.

That, and angry fans are funny.

Easy to answer, people have nothing better to do than trash other people's work. If I don't like a certain book, I will just give a review stating why I didn't like said book and move on. Sometimes I rant, because there is nothing worst than having high expectations for a book you end up hating.
It has also to do with jealousy because she made so much money and that bothers people.
I enjoyed Twilight, read more than once, but I've moved on. It's not a master piece, but nobody ever claimed it to be. I just wished people stop comparing everything single YA novel out there to it. There was one instance where I had given a bad review to a book and someone commented that at least it wasn't as bad as Twilight. WTF!

I am hugh fan of the books and have re-read them many times, if it hadn't been for Rob I probably wouldn't have watched them....but come on, it would be rude not to :D I have my tickets for Breaking Dawn Pt1 already!! Seriously people need to remember that this book is a work of fiction. Whilst Stephanie Meyes is by no means Shakespeare she sold us a love story, with a happy ending.....isn't that what we all want?! And sometime love isn't all fluffy it is dark, possessive people get over protective and jealous and it tends to make us act foolishly.
After reading the books I was at a loss for weeks of what to read next because of I just couldn't get into anything, the way Edward and Bella felt about each other was all consuming. I am not saying I would turn into a Vampire for my husabnd (if that were even possible) but I would do whatever I had to do to keep him safe even forsake my own life. Isn't that not what both characters are doing?

Quite frankly the amount of haters out there astound me, like I said earlier it is just a book. If you don't like it don't read it?! But allow people to have their own opinions xD Rant over xD

I love this! I seriously don't get it either. They all need to calm down. Why hate Twilight? What did Twilight ever do to anyone. If you don't like it don't read/watch it! The same goes for Justin Bieber. I'm 26 and yes I like some of his songs. They're catchy... I don't wanna go find him or kidnap him or anything. Once wrong with thinking he's a cool singer. Who's the best singer/rapper ever is relative. Everyone is different. Everyone likes what they like. If haters don't like it, don't give it power!

I for one scream every time I see the previews for Twilight BD part 1. I can't wait to see it. I love Robert Pattz / Edward! And the rest of the Cullens! Who else is excited?

You saying all this for the Twilight fans is just what we needed. People love to hate Twilight. Why, I have no idea. The characters seem so real in so many ways. I think the Harry Potter "nerds" :p love it all the same. They just don't want to admit it. I'm looking forward to see what all people have to say about this. I feel some good arguments are sure on the way.

I think because it is so in the main stream and especially since the awful movies came out. I used to really be in love with twilight but after reading more PNR series and the better authors out there i saw all the flaws and holes that I didnt notice before.

Like you said the last book was so anti-climatic it was just sad. Of course she could do more with the series even write novella or full length books about some of the other characters. But the author is overrated and I do not think she is that good to be able to do that.

I hate Twilight because it is an offensive, delusional work that really sends a cruel and hypocritical message to its audience. Bella and Edward are mutually abusive to each other, and the explanation for why have been put more eloquently by other writers far more skilled and overwhelmed with loathing than I am.

Aside from the fact that the whole series could be condensed into one or two volumes and be the better for it, the book series is filled with anti-climaxes. After all, many of the struggles are settled with simple talks that don't really have much tension to them. There are no twists, nothing unexpected happens. It's entirely by-the-books, filled with what amounts to pre-teen porn (let's face it: they don't have sex until the fourth volume, but all that scandalous face-touching is CLEARLY far too much contact for its innocent audience).

However, more so than that, books like THIS are overwhelmingly more popular than series like The hunger Games (though the gap is shortening), and at least a dozen other far superior novels for young adults. I originally read the first Twilight book around the time it first came out, alongside Holly Black's Tithe. I approached it without any preconceived notions or what have you, and, even then, I thought it was okay at best, painfully slow at worst.

Then the fanbase ruined it. I dislike Twilight most of all for you, the fans, and you, the anti-fans, for making this book literally unavoidable. This book should've died silently years ago, where no one would ever have to write essays about how awesome or how awful it is--myself included!

...to be fair, I'm probably over exaggerating when I say I hate the book. That would imply I care enough about it to write a giant post on a forum for the book--wait a second...
