I think Hillary's rec has a character who reminds me of Dimitri, and there's a forbidden love element. It reads slightly younger than VA, but Mythos is the rec I would have given too for giving me some of that same feeling.

Justin (justin_941) | 1 comments Been browsing through this thread a little today, so many books I haven't had the chance to read yet that sound really good. I really want to start reading some more High Fantasy again, it's been awhile since I have read one.

Think the last ones I read were Melina Marchetta's series (Finnikin of the Rock/Froi of the Exiles) and I am anxiously waiting on the third book to come out in the US.

Angie Elle (angieelle) Jenny wrote: "How did you feel when you read VA? And maybe...what made you feel that way? The characters? The world? The mythology? The development of the story?"

It was so long ago, I don't remember exactly. But I was hoping someone would have a series that made them feel the way they felt when reading VA, and the same thing might happen to me. I was shooting for the moon, Jenny. LOL

Angie Elle (angieelle) Christina wrote: "Have you read the Hex Hall books? You might like those! YA Paranormal with action, magic and some romance but not super-heavy reads?

I'd steer clear of the House of Night books, personally."

I haven't. I'll check them out. Thank you!

message 355: by Angie Elle (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) Thanks for the suggestions. Are the Mythos Academy books the ones that were written almost identically to the VA books? I remember there was a series that was, but I can't recall it off the top of my head, and I want to make sure I don't read that one. LOL

message 356: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Nope, the almost identical series was Covenant.

message 357: by Christina (new)

Christina (alinastarkov) lol, thanks Stacia. I wouldn't want to read those either.

(I did finally get Angelfall though, aren't you excited?)

message 359: by Rektok (new)

Rektok Ross | 9 comments Hi everyone! Thought I'd send in some suggestions for what I've recently seen requested (YA romance) and (YA paranormal) for some recommendations from the group on any survival/adventure books.
For YA romance, I LOVED On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta and Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins , For YA Paranormal, I am obsessed with the LUX series by Jennifer Armentrout (about aliens) Onyx (Lux, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout , and I think the Covenant series is very enjoyable. In the begining it definitely reminds you a lot of VA, but then it changes a lot and comes into its own later on. Though it is MUCH more adult, the Karen Mornings Fever Series is AMAZE Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning . There are some old school books too that are getting reissued that are fantastic -- really, anything by LJ Smith (The Forbidden Game Series, the Night World Series, esp. book 2). Hope that is helpful. Now, PLEASE, does anyone know some good survival/adventure stories for YA? I can find nothing. Everything is old (like Hatchet, Island of Blue Dolphins) etc. Beauty Queens doesnt really count because it is satire, and I want real survival/adventure.

Since I buy books for my brother's classroom I'm always trying to find a couple of adventure type books for the boys to balance out all the PNR I tend to send. Not that I think there is a gender bias or anything, but I have to think the Fallen series has more 6th grade girl appeal than 6th grade boy appeal...

One book I have on my "to-buy" list is Peak by Roland Smith . I haven't read it yet but I think I found it on a list of books to buy for middle school boys. Is that the type of thing you're looking for?

message 361: by Jenny (last edited Feb 03, 2013 08:50AM) (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments Here you go:
The Raft by S.A. Bodeen Survive by Alex Morel Nation by Terry Pratchett

All I can think of off the top of my head that aren't apocalyptic type stories. I got the impression you wanted more straight-up survival without the apocalypse, like the two you mentioned. These days, most of those survival stories are set in an apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic setting, though.

If you are interested in apocalyptic survival, I'd recommend This is Not a Test and Dark Inside.

message 362: by Rektok (new)

Rektok Ross | 9 comments Rachel -- thanks so much! Yes thats exactly what Im looking for. I read "Trapped" and it was decent but middle grade (actually, the 6th grade boys might enjoy so you might consider picking up). There is a ton of adult nonfiction (like Touching the Void, Alive, Miracle on the Andes, Into the Wild, Into Thin Air, all of which are excellent) but just no YA fiction. I have heard about a book called "Life as we Know it" but its writen diary-style (sorry, unless its Anne Frank, I have difficulty getting into those types of books). Also heard of a book called "Ashfall" -not sure if good? Ugh I need help! LOL.

message 363: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments Ashfall is another apocalyptic one - set in the U.S. if the supervolcano under Yellowstone were to erupt.

message 364: by Christina (new)

Christina (alinastarkov) Seconding This is Not a Test, that was a great one.

message 365: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (ofdustandstarlight) Christina, you got Angelfall? I got it in paperback recently as well, let me know if you feel like starting that!

message 366: by Rektok (new)

Rektok Ross | 9 comments Thanks Jenny and Christina! I will check those out too! End of world books would be okay if realistic (ie natural disaster or war) but not really looking for supernatural (ie zombie) or futuristic (ie hunger games) right now. Don't get me wrong, I like those too, but I've read them all and am craving something a little more realistic right now. Contemporary disaster LOL

I liked the Behind the Gates (Tomorrow Girls, #1) by Eva Gray books. It's kinda futuristic but not many years in the future. There are 4 books in the series. Each from a different person's point of view. Not Diary like though.

It's also more contemporary, not supernatural, there is a world war, and America seems to be on the losing side. It's about 4 girls trying to survive with the effects of that.

message 368: by Christina (new)

Christina (alinastarkov) There are zombies in TiNaT, but you never really see them? It focuses more on the interpersonal relationships and survival skills of the kids who wind up barricading themselves in the high school. That's part of the reason why I liked it so much, it was different from all the other YA zombie things out at the time.

Elaine: I did! I want to start it after I finish Madman's Daughter, I think??

message 369: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 560 comments Another book I loved when I was younger was Tomorrow, When the War Began (Tomorrow, #1) by John Marsden It's kind of a realistic dystopia (if that makes sense) set in Australia. It first came out in the '90s but they recently re-released it.

Agreed I was just about to put this, then I saw you did :)

Possibly one of my all time Fav series!

LOL. I am juggling a hell lot of books now but whatever, I'll join you if you decide to.

message 372: by Christina (new)

Christina (alinastarkov) I'm juggling about three or four, I just can't seem to finish anything! Starting is clearly not an issue, though.

message 373: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (ofdustandstarlight) Oh lordy, I'm in the same situation as you Christina. I keep starting on books but not finishing them, this is really bad. I think I'm holding on to 8 unfinished books now...

Anyhow, has anyone read any good books on cults? Some examples would be Heaven's Gate and Jonestown. I'm searching for documentaries now, but books would be really good too.

message 374: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Regina just read one on Jonestown not too long ago. If she doesn't see this, I might check her shelf later.

Are you looking for fiction or real life accounts? Helter Skelter was a popular book about Manson's hold on people but I haven't read it.

I love watching cult documentaries. The book I'm working on now is about a girl who falls for a cult leader.

message 375: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments Like nonfiction? Or fiction involving cults, too?

message 376: by Rektok (new)

Rektok Ross | 9 comments Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! Elaine-- you could try Under the Banner of Heaven if you are interested in nonfiction.Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith

message 377: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh if we are hitting documentaries let me have them!

haha I have been trying to find some goods ones lately

message 378: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Usually, I just watch the documentaries that are on t.v. as I see them. We have a few channels that always have some sort of cult documentaries on them here and there.

I hope Regina won't mind me stalking her shelves but I know that she gave 4 stars to A Thousand Lives The Untold Story of Hope, Deception, and Survival at Jonestown by Julia Scheeres

message 379: by Elaine (last edited Feb 09, 2013 11:04AM) (new)

Elaine (ofdustandstarlight) Whoops, didn't specify clearly enough. But I'm looking more into non-fiction.

Ooooh, thanks Stacia for doing the stalking on my behalf, hah. That book seems to be exactly what I'm looking for! I've heard of Helter Skelter and was recently rec-ed another Manson book that is supposedly better than the popular Helter Skelter. Must read these soon.

@Rektok Thanks for the rec, I've never heard of that book before.
Will be checking it out too (:

@Melanie I watched one of Heaven's Gate on youtube!
I think it's pretty easily searched for, let me know if you need a url.

Cristal (Professional Book Procrastinator) | 65 comments I'm not sure what book to read at the moment. I feel like I am in such a reading funk. I don't know what I feel like reading. I started Shadowlands (Shadowlands, #1) by Kate Brian but set it aside to read Turning Point (Kathleen Turner, #3) by Tiffany A. Snow and Pivot Point (Pivot Point, #1) by Kasie West which I finished..nothing else is holding my interest. Any ideas?

Maybe try some short stories? When I have reading blockade I'm reaching for some short free reads, who knows - you might find something you'll like? And if not - there's no loss ;)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Jenny is the list queen.

Another fun/suspenseful book is Unraveling (Unraveling, #1) by Elizabeth Norris

It's a little younger, but the Percy Jackson series is a lot of adventurous fun.
