That's what the *intense* folks don't get and constantly leaves me shaking my head. It's a different opinion on a book...not a personal attack.

Mostly I think it's cool how two people with similar interests and who love a lot of the same books, can diverge so drastically on others.

Katy | 478 comments So many series I haven't gotten to yet! Too many good books out there haha. I wish I had more reading time!

Regina (reginar) I am afraid to read it -- the wait has already been painful!

I'm having the same problem. My to-read shelf is getting insane and I want to read all of them NEXT!

In addition to the ones already recommended I'd add these (first one in series):

Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock, #1) by Faith Hunter Disappearing Nightly (Esther Diamond, #1) by Laura Resnick Blue Diablo (Corine Solomon, #1) by Ann Aguirre Among the Living (PsyCop, #1) by Jordan Castillo Price Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher Sandman Slim (Sandman Slim, #1) by Richard Kadrey Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1) by Richelle Mead Mind Games (The Disillusionists Trilogy, #1) by Carolyn Crane The Renfield Syndrome (Rhiannon's Law, #2) by J.A. message 208: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) LOL!! That wait is killing me!

Also, perhaps because it's M/M and I know that's not for everyone... though it is an AMAZING series!

You had me at M/M - I've put the first PsyCop on my TBR list.

message 210: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Oh yeah, if you like M/M it's DEFINITE read. The first few are shorts, but they get longer and longer.

message 211: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I would say the first two are about 3.5 stars, #3++ are 4-5 stars.

She has other books and series I like too (she being the author):

Zero Hour by Jordan Castillo Price Mnevermind by Jordan Castillo Price

message 212: by [deleted user] (new)

Elaina | 20 comments Hey guys, I'm unsure if this is the place to ask this but I need a recommendation for my kiddies. It's a group of 4 girls in 5th grade they are English as a second language students and I want to read a cute book with them. In looking for something like American girls and house on mango street. Any ideas?

message 215: by N.B. (new)

N.B. Dixon Has anyone read Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi? I'm trying to decide if I should read it. I really liked the sample I listened to, but I've heard it's really violent in places and I don't like books that go into really graphic detail. What did readers think? Normally I hate spoilers, but in this case, they might help me make up my mind.

Wow, I wish I could help out but most of my favorite books from childhood were at a slightly lower reading/grade level, and the youngest I've read lately is more middle grade type of stuff. Are you specifically wanting historical books?

How about things like The Bridge to Tarabithia, Tuck Everlasting and The Chronicles of Narnia. Of course they may be difficult if these students reading level is low due to language decoding. Also I love Letters to Riffka Letters from Rifka by Karen Hesse it might be something they can relate to because it deals with a young Russian girls struggles with immigration.

message 219: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments What about the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson stuff? The kids I know around that age like this kind of stuff:

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #1) by Jeff Kinney Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan The Ruins of Gorlan (Ranger's Apprentice, #1) by John Flanagan The Emerald Atlas (The Books of Beginning, #1) by John Stephens The Maze of Bones (The 39 Clues, #1) by Rick Riordan The Strange Case of Origami Yoda (Origami Yoda #1) by Tom Angleberger Coraline by Neil Gaiman The Alchemyst (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #1) by Michael Scott

All of the kids that I know around age 10 are boys. Some of these will appeal to girls as well, but if there are some more 'girly' series that 10 year olds are into these days, I'm not aware of them.

You could try older stuff like this:
Alanna The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness, #1) by Tamora Pierce The Book of Three (The Chronicles of Prydain, #1) by Lloyd Alexander Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare The Giver (The Giver, #1) by Lois Lowry Holes (Holes, #1) by Louis Sachar

message 220: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 178 comments Elaina, Diane and Jenny's recs are wonderful reads and great places to start.

You could also do some Roald Dahl like James And The Giant Peach (Puffin Audio Book & Tape Packs) by Roald Dahl . Or Beverly Cleary like The Mouse and the Motorcycle (Ralph S. Mouse, #1) by Beverly Cleary .

R.A. Desilets | 375 comments I have a question about Hushed by Kelley York . Is it 1. good 2. worth reading 3. a good depiction of a main character who you shouldn't root for but want to anyway?

I've read the synopsis, and I'm looking for a book with this tone.

If you don't recommend Hushed, are there other books with this same dark feel with a bit of romance from a male perspective that you would recommend?

Thanks :)

message 224: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (last edited Nov 10, 2012 10:25PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I really liked Hushed. It has an extremely annoying female lead character who I wanted to strangle, but I loved the actual story and how this guy was running around doing bad things with no real conscience about it.

The romance is not the prominent part of the story but it does develop into a sweet m/m romance toward the end.

I had similar feelings about The Storyteller as I did Hushed, except Storyteller adds a bit of a fairy tale element to the book, whereas Hushed is just a straight contemporary with a dark side.

Are you specifically looking for contemporary books or is it mainly the anti-hero/potential villain type of lead you're looking to read about?

message 225: by R.A. (new)

R.A. Desilets | 375 comments I'm looking specifically for dark YA male voices that are done well and are a semi-villain. Or at least someone who starts out with "man, I really hate him, but want to know why he acts that way" and becomes "he's the best person ever"

While I would prefer contemporary, I'm okay with whatever fits that description as long as it's not high fantasy or historical fiction.

I'm writing a contemporary YA for NaNo with this feel to it. I want to read a few books prior to editing the manuscript so that I can make sure that mine hits the mark I'm aiming for. ^_^

Because I just realized that I have never read an anti-hero story with a male MC voice, and I probably should, considering.

I'll probably add both Hushed and The Storyteller to my list, since I really need to explore different voices... But any other recommendations will definitely get added too!

Try Rotters by Daniel Kraus. Rotters by Daniel Kraus It's actually more the opposite, in that the main character doesn't start out as a "villian" but his transformation is interesting and there are some really creep supporting (adult) characters. And it's very well written.

Here's the link to my review if it will help determine if this is along the lines of what you are looking for. Don't be put off by me givig it only 3 stars; quality wise, this is much higher.

I also found the Male Protags thread on here, so I'll be picking up a bunch of recommendations that way too :)

Thanks for the input!

Casey Anderson | 637 comments Ok so I'm looking for a new YA series that is not a dystopia and not paranormal. And preferable not only a love story. I mean, I know nearly all books have a romance but I don't want that to be the primary plot.
Paranormal and dystopia are usually my favorites, I'm just tired of them and want something totally different by a whole new author.
Any suggestions?

Katy | 478 comments hi guys!

I've been trying this new thing where I start reading books outside my usual YA tendancy. I'm getting better at finding Adult UF and PNR (though I haven't gotten around to reading many of them yet haha) and I'm working on reading more of the classics.

However I'm looking for a good non YA Contemprary/Romance. I like thought provoking books as well as tear jerkers. Whenever I try to find something at the book store I get so overwhelmed that I give up because I have no idea what to look for :P

I liked books like The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and Dear John by Nicholas Sparks (though I'm trying to stay away from anymore Sparks.

Also, I wouldn't mind any horror or thrillers, as I haven't really ventured outside Stephen King and James Patterson haha.

Thanks!

I'm late to the party here- but once I got into it I really enjoyed The Luxe series. Its basically historical young adult fiction. There is definitely romance in there, but lots of other stuff worth reading. The trick to this series, though, is that you have to read past the first book. The Luxe (Luxe, #1) by Anna Godbersen

message 250: by Anna (new)

Anna (novelaureate) Ok YA fans- I need some help! I am kind of requesting help all over the place (hope no one gets ticked off) but I am struggling.

I just finished Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth and realized that the next installment is not due out until late 2013--- I am DYING of anticipation here!!!

The problem is that I keep reading unfinished series. Note to self: must stop doing that!

I do not at all have the patience to find out what is going to happen to Kate and Daemon in the Lux series, or Tris in the Divergence series, or to find out what will happen next in Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee or in Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices, #3) by Cassandra Clare ... I am screwed..

description

Someone tell me what to do next!

The emotions are overwhelming me!

Basically this is me right now:

description

Can someone suggest a solid YA series that is completed that I can read while I wait for the shocking conclusions to these nail biters!?

Also- worth noting that I've read the vampire academy series already.

Thank you fellow bookworms!!!
