Hounded is a good one. How about Ready Player One Ready Player One by Ernest Cline The Cuckoo's Calling The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith or The Martian The Martian by Andy Weir

message 852: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments What about Feed (Newsflesh Trilogy, #1) by Mira Grant which is a political mystery with zombies as an element. Also maybe Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1) by Pierce Brown is a pretty good one.

Lyzzibug ~Still Breathing~ (lyzzibug) | 197 comments His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire #1) by Naomi Novik is one boyfriend loves. He is 30.

We actually need more information about your brother. Finance is his job, but what are his likes and hobbies? How much of a guys guy is he?

message 855: by [deleted user] (new)

he is pretty much a guys guy.
Loves his car, and is interested in all the financey dramas (i.e wolf of wall street).

I know he has read LOTR and a few of the classic fantasys

he is the least geeky in my family of geeks but still has interest
I was thinking of ready player one, as I gave it to my other brother and he loved it

he wants me to find him something new, so much pressure hah

Crime? Mystery? Magic? The Dresden Files. Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher
Dresden is kinda wimpy in the beginning. Get to books 3+ and it gets really good.

Has he read the King Killer Chronicles? You get a little bit of everything with that series. The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss

message 858: by [deleted user] (new)

So I ended up going with
Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher seemed like a good bet
American Gods (American Gods, #1) by Neil Gaiman one of my favs
Finders Keepers by Stephen King something that just grabed my eye in the store....now I want to read it haha.

Thanks everyone for help. If he likes aby of these, ill have others I can gift him next time :)

Jessica | 5 comments I am looking for a book I really like fiction, I just finished the kricket series and King's Hall and I loved the adventure in them, but I want a fantasy like them but with a romance plot that doesn't break my heart? Got any suggestions?

message 860: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments I am unfamiliar with either of the books you listed. As far as fantasy goes I love the Lumatere Chronicles book 2 & 3 were even better than 1. Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles, #1) by Melina Marchetta I also loved Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore and Sabriel (Abhorsen, #1) by Garth Nix

I loved all of those books!!! I feel like I have run out of books to read! Thanks for the suggestions

message 862: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments If you feel like you have run out of books try The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan I love the Magic and world building in this series - they are hefty books and it is quite a long series so it will keep you busy for awhile. Also The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson is a great fantasy series you might want to check out. A more contempary fantasy I liked was The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater and Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1) by Pierce Brown was pretty good as a sci fi book.

message 864: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Man, both Diane and Hillary have named amazing books, lol. Raven Boys, Red Rising, Lumatere, and Seven Realms are all my favorites and I loved Wheel of Time and really liked Mistborn, lmao.

I wouldn't even bother trying to list more.

I also noticed you read at least book one in the Chronicles of Elantra: Cast in Shadow (Chronicles of Elantra, #1) by Michelle Sagara You might like to continue if you haven't. It's a long series (11th is coming out later next month) but it is decent over all. The romance aspect isn't so in your face, it's subtle and keeps you wondering about it.

Casey Anderson | 637 comments Can you guys see when I added books to my to read list? I want a book that qualifies for our current challenge, that's on my list, that is not sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal or dystopia. Something about real people. It could be contemporary or historical.

I just have read a lot of stuff that is one of those 4 I listed lately. Any tips?

The Book Thief or Fangirl????

message 871: by Hillary (new)

Fiction without woo woo or the leftover mess of a huge KABOOM. I think I stopped in the middle of things you added in 2014.

Kelley (ksceccato) | 20 comments The last YA fantasy I read was Mechanica, which I enjoyed quite a bit. Could you guys help me find a few other books like it in the following crucial ways:
1) it's alternate-world or historical fantasy (no contemporary stuff); and
2) the major female characters like each other.

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) Has anyone read the various series by Jessica Sorensen? I've read The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden and wanted to know if the series was worth finishing? Also, was curious about the Ella and Micha series as well...

message 878: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (ksceccato) | 20 comments Steampunk works for me. Anything second-world works for me. I just don't care much for urban fantasy, and I'm a little cold on dystopian.

Have you read Graceling?

message 880: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (ksceccato) | 20 comments I've read Graceling and I enjoyed it. It's been a while, though. I seem to remember Bitterblue played a substantial role in it, but I'm cloudy on how much Katsa did or didn't come to care about her. Still, I believe it would qualify.

My request post sprang from my frustration at the number of YA fantasy novels, both contemporary and second-world, that feature female leads who are "not like other girls," and that depict all other female characters as nuisances at best, enemies at worst. This sort of thing has cropped up even in novels I've otherwise enjoyed. Leviathan -- female lead is not like other girls, dislikes the only other female character around. The Final Empire, The Magicians' Guild -- female lead befriends only male characters, almost never interacts with other girls. The Naming, The Cry of the Icemark -- female lead has no particular animosity toward other girls/women and even gets along with some of them, but still, her only important relationships are with male characters. You get the idea.

I welcome stories like Cinder, Cold Magic, Spindle's End, The Wizard of London, and Uprooted, in which a heroine's friendship with another female character is depicted as at least nearly as important as her relationship with a love interest.

message 881: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie @Kelley Cinder was the first thing that came to mind when you mentioned Mechanica. Another steampunk author I've been enjoying is Gail Carriger -- I've only read the Finishing School series so far, but I'm looking forward to the Parasol Protectorate and the Custard Protocol series.

message 882: by Kelley (last edited Nov 23, 2015 02:31PM) (new)

Kelley (ksceccato) | 20 comments Be warned about Soulless -- the heroine, Alexia, is the only, and I do mean the ONLY, female character with a working moral compass and two brain cells to rub against one another. All other women are shrews (her stepfamily) or drooling idiots (her "best friend"). It's a good book and well worth a read; just don't go into it expecting female cameraderie (which the series title "Parasol Protectorate" might suggest one would find).

Are there decent friendships between girls in the Finishing School series?

message 883: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I found the Finishing School girls surprisingly interesting, Sophronia (MC) was a bit of a MarySue and Dimity (the bff) wasn't necessarily the sharpest, but I did like Sidheagh (supporting bff) and Monique ("villain").

message 884: by Heidi (new)

Heidi All my favorite girl friendships are in non fantasy books. Sorry!

message 885: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie For lady friendships, I like the Tortall books by Tamora Pierce :)

message 886: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (ksceccato) | 20 comments I've been dipping my toes in the water of those. I've read the first of the "Keladry" series (First Test), but I don't remember Keladry having/finding any female friends in that one. Now, in the "Wild Magic" series, Daine does have one staunch and loyal female friend; she may not be human, but for me, Kitten still qualifies. I haven't read the "Alanna" or "Beka Cooper" books yet, so I don't know about those. I would welcome some details.

message 887: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I always recommend reading them chronologically, because Alanna goes through knight training first before she shows up again in the Daine and Kel books (I love it when old characters resurface). I think the Beka books may be my favorite though; she has great friends at her apartment and a fantastic mentor on the police force. And the Trickster duology follows Alanna's daughter Aly as she becomes a spy and befriends the Balitang sisters.

It's MG but have you looked into The School for Good and Evil (The School for Good and Evil, #1) by Soman Chainani I actually really liked it and female friendship is kind of the basis of the whole story.

Yeah that is why I didn't recommend Alanna - I can't remember female friendships.

message 892: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (ksceccato) | 20 comments Smoke and Bone is great, with Zuzana a significant character (and fun to read about). I haven't read the others yet but they are high on my radar. Thanks for the heads-up!

Ashley Marie Jenny wrote: "Have you tried Stormdancer (The Lotus War, #1) by Jay Kristoff Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor series?"

Definitely recommend DOSB, but I wasn't a fan of Throne of Glass -- I found it predictable and boring. I want to read the Lotus War series so bad!

message 894: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I don't read a lot of romance, but I did like the romance aspect of Maggie Stiefvater's Wolves of Mercy Falls books -- Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater is the first book.

If you haven't read Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor and Park, I highly recommend you reading it! Not typical at all, in my own humble opinion. Although it is pretty popular so you've probably heard of it. The Scarlet trilogy by AC Gaughen Scarlet (Scarlet, #1) by A.C. Gaughen has a very romantic adventurous tone to it. I haven't come across a lot of people who know about it.

My friend says there's a book and the cover has a woman with a Victorian dress on and the title is metallic and the first word is in a small square and it's centered on the front cover. The premise is she is a normal girl and all the girls get taken away and the wealthy men choose who they want to stay in their house and whoever they don't pick something happens to them? she's going crazy trying to think of this book, and I figured if anyone knew it would be someone here!
