You could convince her to read ebooks so she doesn't notice the length? lol"

Enclave is a good series but the first book is kind of weak in comparison to the final 2, IMO at least.

Not sure what the length cut-off is for your niece? Maybe she needs a kindle or something where you can't tell how big the book is by it's size.

Here are some choices, all of which have leading female characters:
The Selection (The Selection, #1) by Kiera Cass A Shimmer of Angels (Angel Sight, #1) by Lisa M. Basso Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth The Pledge (The Pledge, #1) by Kimberly Derting Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls, #1) by C.C. Hunter

message 753: by Brittney (new)

Brittney I highly recommend The Violet Eden series. The series isn't hugely popular, but it is really good.

Kdbrand | 353 comments Anyone know of some good YA books set in the Middle East? Thanks!

message 755: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I haven't read it yet, but I've heard it's good and I think it's set in the middle east... Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson

Wait, the synopsis says 'Middle Eastern state', so yeah, lol.

message 756: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Wait, now that i looked I don't see that anyone classified it as YA. I don't know why I thought that, so scratch that.

message 757: by Shelby (new)

Shelby | 9 comments If you're still looking I've read some good PR and UF,

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Are you looking specifically for amnesia books?

message 760: by Violeta (new)

Violeta (elemenestra) | 2 comments I just read Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1) by Pierce Brown and I would love to read something similar to it

Katie (asimplewish) Stacia (queen of double standards) wrote: "Are you looking specifically for amnesia books?"

Yup!

message 762: by Katie (new)

Katie (kater07) I am currently looking for a book that shows the Japanese perspective during WWII - not an American in Japan.

Genre: WWII Nonfiction, Fiction, Memoir
Setting: WWII Japan or WWII Japanese Internment Camp
Characters: Japanese child, Japanese adult

It needs to be YA appropriate because I'll be pairing my final choice with A Separate Peace for my 9th grade (14-16 year olds) students in the August.

Thanks,
Katie

message 763: by Christie (new)

Christie (cereale) Two books I would recommend are:

The Journal of Ben Uchida Citizen 13559 Mirror Lake Internment Camp (My Name Is America) by Barry Denenberg I haven't read this particular My Name is America title but I have enjoyed others I have read. It may be a bit on the young side for your students.

A nonfiction selection which has been very popular with schools in my area is Imprisoned The Betrayal of Japanese Americans during World War II by Martin W. Sandler . It won this years YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) Award for Excellence in Nonfiction.

message 764: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 560 comments I remember reading Snow Falling on Cedars when I was in high school but I can't remember if I liked it very much, lol.

This is a memoir I've assigned to my college students, mostly freshmen. Might be worth looking into as well! Nisei Daughter

One of my favorite YA series is

message 777: by Heidi (new)

Heidi The first Kate Daniels book is just not good. I will admit it and a lot of my GR friends also said the same thing. The rest of the series is really good though :)

message 778: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Nicola if you like audio books I HIGHLY recommend White Cat on audio book. The actor Jesse Eisenberg narrates it and does a fantastic job.

message 779: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Oh also I would recommend Cinder Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer and Hold Me Closer, Necromancer Hold Me Closer, Necromancer (Necromancer, #1) by Lish McBride

I think I was the only person I know who liked the first book. I gave it 4 stars. Mostly for the unique world.

Ok so i just need to plough through the first kate daniels, as i've heard such good things about the series as a hole ill give it another try least till i get to 2nd book to make a better judgement :)

Haha it looks like you got a lot of different book recs and should be set for a little while.

message 785: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (dollpartsx3) Honestly I want to find authors as good as jenny han, as king, and melina marchetta. These authors just have it. And I need more like them. Ive read all of john green and rainbow rowell. Ive tried stephanie perkins and did not like one bit. I already like sarah ockler. Anybody else? Doesnt even need to be contemporary authors. Just want some wow worthy YA fiction with awesome prose.

message 786: by Heidi (last edited Sep 09, 2014 12:35PM) (new)

Heidi As a huge Melina Marchetta fan myself I also find it hard to match her writing. Have you read anything by Cath Crowley? A Little Wanting Song by Cath Crowley or Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley ?? Or how about Past the Shallows by Favel Parrett ?? Both are also Aussie authors and have the same way of writing as Melina IMO. Speaking of Aussie authors - have you read I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak ??? I love Markus! Wish he had more books out. And yet another Aussie book I loved was Raw Blue by Kirsty Eagar . Can you tell I am obsessed with the Aussies?? hahaha

message 787: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'm a pretty big Aussie fan too, lol.

But even with the Aussie authors I have yet to find anyone as amazing as Marchetta. I've just read others that are really good.

I would say try something by Patrick Ness. He's the other author that I like nearly as much as Melina. (And John Green, but you said you already tried him.)

message 788: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Oh yes. I agree. Patrick Ness is actually on my top 5 writers list :)

message 789: by Casey (new)

Casey Anderson | 637 comments So I want to read something from my "to read" list...that's different from what I have been reading...
I'm thinking something Adult, realistic (aka not fantasy/vampire/fairy etc)...that's not really a romance and also not a dystopia or apocalypse type thing.
It can be modern times or historical...as long as it's realistic.
Any recs?

Hi Casey, other than Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon (yes, you must) have you tried The Bronze Horseman (The Bronze Horseman, #1) by Paullina Simons ?

OMG... Wendy, I cannot believe you did not add: Friday Brown by Vikki Wakefield / All I Ever Wanted by Vikki Wakefield Those books had me feeling aaalllll the feels. :)

@ Catherine, give these books a go. (I'd start with Friday Brown though.)

message 793: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Casey - I looked though your tbr pile and would recommend any of the following Graceling Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore (listed as YA but I consider it mature YA), Fangirl Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (college aged read), or Hounded Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne (adult read).

message 794: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie @Casey I agree with Heidi's recommendations, and I would also recommend The Sight (Sight, #1) by David Clement-Davies and Fire Bringer by David Clement-Davies . Animal stories, realistic for the most part, with a light touch of fantasy.

Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon is something I want to read...but it's appealing to me right now for some reason. I'll check out the other though. Thanks you 2.

message 796: by Casey (new)

Casey Anderson | 637 comments Thanks! Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell sounds great actually. I've never read Rainbow Rowell have been wanting too. I will see if my library has it.
If not, I might go with The Sight (Sight, #1) by David Clement-Davies as I have it in paper back.

Those both would be my recommendations. Both are Kind of Romance (I know they fit in other genre's also) I also really liked The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and was just discussing this with somebody the other day. I know it has been around a while but worth a read

The Devouring (The Devouring, #1) by Simon Holt is well and truly creepy!!! I don't scare easily either, but that series is one of the most terrifying I've ever read!
