well MAYBE God made it where earth was a MOTHER...maybe he wanted things to seem even between Males AND Females.

i totally agree with you, riley. yes, god is portrayed as a father figure, but what about the holy spirit? and isn't god supposed to be everywhere, in everything? and besides, anyone can believe in god, and anyone can tell people that. god is a loving, forgiving, all-inclusive guy, isn't he? i don't think he would want us to discriminate.

jesus was a man and jesus is god! men are to be in the image of god and jesus and preach, they have nuns to show the image of mary!
But John, that is just your opinion. Why is god man? Why is this society so stuck on the idea that men run everything and that women are only here to bear their children? people used to bury female babies at birth because the males could work. Who say's women cant work?!??

no its not my opinion its the truth......and jesus is a form of god..god appears in 3 forms, father,son,and holy spirit. I have nothing against woman at all!!!! i belive woman can do anything except be ordained as a priest.....priests r 2 b men that are to be in the image of the father the son and the holy spirit!
But my question is why are women always in the backseat? The woman that carried jesus for 9 months in her womb, cant she be an image of god?

Im sorry that was harsh, i take it back. But pretty much every scientific fact regarding pregnancy says that you cannot get pregnant without having sex, and having semen attach itself to an egg. Graphic and gross i know, but true.
Anyway, i still want to know why god is a man according to christians? In islam god is not man or woman. God does not have the shape of a human. And even though i dont believe in god, that makes sense to me.

that is ridiculous there are planty or female rapists, both men and women can be raped. thats totally ridiculous. and plus, that in no way relates to women preaching or not.

and what gender is the holy spirit? god is referred to as the father because jesus called him that. i can buy that. but many people today say that he is referred to that in the bible, and that is not an excuse. we are not all knowing. neither are the people who wrote the bible. GOD IS. so, this wonderful all forgiving dude should not discriminate, and neither should we.

my view on this is that everyone believes in their own form of god. god can be male to some, female to some, some weird whole-foods shopping monk-ish ashram dweller, or an unpicturable divine. God can be whatever the worshipper pictures. So to some people God is not male and women should be allowed to preach. But to those who take the bible literally, meaning many christians, it explicitly says that God is male. So I think that since priests and many worshippers take the bible literally, in some faiths it is perfectly justifiable for preachers to be men. However, if a member of the congregation does not believe in that same literal form of God, that poses a problem. So I personally believe that God is no gender, it is too divine to be humanlike. But I am Catholic and I agree with the Catholic church on most fronts, so I'll just suck it up, worship my own form of God, and understand that no church can match my beliefs exactly. Though I do think that maybe in another hundred years we will have moved forward so much that womens rights will be more equal to mens and in the catholic church there might be female priests.
I think probably some churches are just stuck on their traditional beliefs that justify all sorts of things regarding one gender having more rights.
i see where you are coming from, liz. i agree with you about churches being stuck on their own beliefs. i think it's going to take a long time for them to catch up with society- it always has:)

actually, at my church we say god is the holy PARENT. any way, why does it matter? women make great pastors, as long as they have faith, kindness, and other virtues. which men need too.
my church balances tradition with new age. =D

Who said mens lives were perfect? From what i've, statically women have harder times. And im NOT generalizing. Women are biologically more emotional, which makes them more prone to depression. Women have to give birth! They have to shove living things out of their youknowhere!
And im sure fathering is very hard in men as well, but all through history women have just been stepped on and pushed over!!
Im going to make a whole new debate about womens rights, but right now were talking about god.
Women should be able to preach whatever they believe. I dont care if you think that god is a man and women should not preach his word, that is discrimination!!
well but about the descrimination, it is what john believes. i think he is perfectly entitled to his opinion and views and im sure he isn't an antifeminist or anything. he just has a more traditional, literal-bible-taking way of thinking.

Yes, God is a different image to everyone. Basically God is thought of as that entity that created the universe. So to some people, he may be male, to others female, and to some a bunch of atoms crashing together.
And John, I think you're making this a little to personal. The question is, "Should women be allowed to preach in front of a congregration/be ordained?" Not, "Do boys have harder lives than girls?"
I personally think that women are equal to men in every way because God is an IT. So yeah. End of debate for me. At least until someone challenges it. ><

Chandani; I'm going to be annoying and point out a technicality here; yes, women can PREACH, anyone can preach, you mean women should be allowed to be priests.I can kind of understand the Catholic church and their view. They basically say; we believe in the bible which says god is a man. a priest needs to be male, like god, because men do things very differently than women and god is a man so only men are meant to be priests. And they say it doesn't matter what women want because its god's will. So even if a woman wants to be ordained, it is not god's will and she can be a nun or just a holy person in general.
I don't think women are equal to men. They are very different with different traits and chemical chromosomes. I do think they should have equal RIGHTS though.
well yeah i HOPE we aren't the same because that would be incredibly awkward...i will agree with you on that, though men have been proven to have more strength than women (i.e., weight lifting, carrying stuff yeah you get the point) and women have been proven to have more endurance than men, (i.e., childbirth, er, stuff leading up to childbirth) but that has nothing to do with preaching.
i would have to disagree Riley im sorry but i dont want ot be friends with somebody who critasizes evrything i say. and yes i know that was like four or five posts ago and i know some words are spelt wrong and dont you dare say anything about it Emma the Dork. cause im sick and grumpy.
