A Hunger Like No Other: (Buddy Read, start 9/30/11)

32. First line of Ch. 17 "Your brother's in Louisiana, my liege." Did you make the connection right away?
Yep, my first thought was WOW Lachlain's brother is the Lykae that helped her Aunts in the fight.
33. Do you know who her mother is now? Comments?
Helen of Troy! WOW. I had the suspicion it would be some famous name from mythology. But that one hadn't crossed my mind. It's interesting that the author chose a person from mythology/history that was not actually accredited with supernatural powers, whereas many mythological figures are.
34. Do you think Garreth and Lucia have something going on between them?
Yes, when he began fighting with them and protecting them I thought, OK they know him. But then the others wanted to know who he was, when Nix said "Ask Lucia" I thought oh man she's having an affair with a Lykae too? That ought to make things easier for Emma. But I'm not sure how progressed that relationship between Garreth and Lucia is. She obviously knows him to know his name.
35. Emma has previously declared herself as someone who avoids conflict, but is increasingly becoming more provacative and surprising herself by how bold she is. Head-butting the vampire in the fight, throwing shampoo bottles at Lachlain. Why do you think that is?
I think it is becasue she is drinking live blood, and her vampiric nature is coming out.
36. Now that Emma is seeing her memories of her Aunts in a different light, does that change your impression of them and how they've treated her?
I think I saw those things when I first read the flashbacks, the aunts wanting to protect her from the light, worrying over her not understanding the danger. I like that Emma is seeing it too, and feeling more accepted.
37. Do you think Lachlain will leave Emma to seek his revenge on the vampires?
I hope not! I hope when they finally get over everything and fall in love that he's overwhelmed enough with the relationship to be willing to give up the revenge.
38. Were you surprised that Lachlain knew her feeding from him was what was impeding his leg from healing?
Yes. I wasn't sure if he suspected that was the cause. It shows that he is willing to sacrifice his own health/well being for hers. I don't think she realizes it though.
39. One of the keys to writing is ending a chapter in a way that makes the reader want to continue on to the next. The final line of Ch. 20 " 'You bloody bitch!' a woman screamed from the gallery downstairs." Were you able to stop reading, or did you have to continue on to find out what was going on?
I couldn't stop. Had to at least read the first page of next chapter to know what was happening.

Well crud. I got the questions to copy and paste but I can't figure out how to get the cursor to the top of the screen to answer them roflol. Yes, I'm on my iPhone and being technologically ignorant :)
32. I didn't make the connection right away, but I did wonder if it was Lachalin's brother.
33. You know, I never put together that it was Helen of Troy. Even knowing emma's last name was Troy and her mom was Helen, it just didn't click until I read it all together lol
34. Yes I do think something is going on between them. Not sure what it is at this point though.
35. I think it's cause she's starting to see herself as independent and doesn't want to have to keep relying on people to take care of her.
36. Yes it gives me a new perspective. I still think they've been meaner to her because of her vamp side, but I can see their lov for her.
37. I would hope not. She's just getting used to being around him. Leaving her isn't the smartest move.
38. No I wasn't. I figured he knew that feeding emma was slowing down his recovery. It just goes to show how much he cares for her that he's willing to delay getting better so that he can be safe and fed.
39. I couldn't stop. In fact, *whispers* I finished the whole book last night. I just couldn't put it down :)

Who is doing questions tomorrow?

Great, Cheryl! Have you read the prequel? If not, I don't think it is important. I was a little f..."
I tried to read it too and gave up. I'm glad to hear that it isn't necessary to read it before this book. Thanks Lisa Kay!

Questions for ch 21-24
40. We learn that Cass is the one yelling at Emma and starts a huge fight. What did you think of Emma's reaction to Cass? What about Emma's reaction to the fight and her realizing that she had wanted Lachlain after? She even went so far as to ask for a kiss in a roundabout way. Did that surprise you?
41. Emma finally learned the truth that she's his mate. Did her response surprise you? Why or why not?
42. What do you think Cassandra really wants? She knows she's not Lachlain's mate. Does she really want him or his power? Do you think Emma will take Cass up on her offer to help her escape?
43. Bowen gave Emma some important advice. Will she listen?
44. Emma had another of her "dreams". It took hearing it, several times, and her finally putting the dreams together for it to sink in. Do you think she'll treat Lachlain differently now?
45. At the end of ch 24 he's given her a gift and she's noticed he's cut himself. Do you think he's trying to sway her? Will it work?

I was so impressed with Emma's response! After the dream/memory about Cass I figured a confrontation between them was bound to come. I thought it was awesome that Emma won the fight, I think that will really help her self confidence knowing she can hold her own. She even say to Nix later "I've got madskills" I loved that part! I think it's great that she's come to trust that Lachlain will protect her, she looked for him during the fight, and even told Bowen later that she wasn't scared of him because Lachlain wouldn't let him hurt her. I was so happy that she asked for that kiss, and more... But you were right Susan, she's pissed about being lied to and the realization of that lie ruined what could have been a really HOT moment. The lead up was great though!
41. Emma finally learned the truth that she's his mate. Did her response surprise you? Why or why not?
Part of me was hoping that she would be so wrapped up in the moment that she would simply accept it, maybe be happy or relieved by it. I know that it was bothering her that she wasn't his mate, part of her secretly wanted to be I think even though she wouldn't admit that. However I was not surprised at her anger, disappointed because I was enjoying the scene, but not surprised.
42. What do you think Cassandra really wants? She knows she's not Lachlain's mate. Does she really want him or his power? Do you think Emma will take Cass up on her offer to help her escape?
I think Cass wants Lachlain. I think she's attracted to him and since neither had found a mate before she was hoping to start up a relationship with him. I don't think Emma trusts or likes Cass enough to take her up on her offer. As much as she's unsure about whether she wants to be Lachlain's mate, she definitely doesn't want Cass to have him either. She knows Cass is just trying to get rid of her to get to Lachlain and isn't genuinely trying to help her.
43. Bowen gave Emma some important advice. Will she listen?
I wish Bowen would have told Emma more about his mate, especially that she was Fey. I think it would help Emma to know that it does happen for mates to be of another species, and to know what happened to Bowen's mate and see how it's affected him. She does care for Lachlain at this point and wouldn't want him to end up like Bowen.
44. Emma had another of her "dreams". It took hearing it, several times, and her finally putting the dreams together for it to sink in. Do you think she'll treat Lachlain differently now?
I think the dreams will help Emma understand where Lachlain is coming from better. Maybe it will help her believe how sure he is about her. I hope so :)
45. At the end of ch 24 he's given her a gift and she's noticed he's cut himself. Do you think he's trying to sway her? Will it work?
He knows how she reacts when she feeds. I think he cut his neck on purpose so she couldn't resist feeding from him. He's trying to show her how much she wants him.

Lisa Kay, are you feeling better?
And lastly, the answers to my own questions...
40. I was super proud of Emma for standing up to Cass. And it shocked me that she asked for a kiss. I also like that Emma was proud if herself for standing her ground and winning.
41. I'm with you Tracey, I wish she had been so caught up in the moment that she would have overlOoked the lie until after. But honestly, I knew she'd be furious about him lying.
42. I think Cass is after the power that being Lachlain's mate would bring. She's known all along that she wasn't it and that he's wanted to find her, yet She'skept after him. She may want him, but I see her wanting the title queen.
43. I think she may listen. I also wish Bowen would have explained about his mate to Emma. It would have made things a little more clear to her.
44. I think the dreams will solidify her thoughts on te whole mate thing. She now knows the longing he's felt for her all these years.
45. Oh yeah. He's out to seduce her. Let's hope it works ;)

32. First line of Ch. 17 "Your brother's in Louisiana, my liege." Did you make the connection right away? Yes! The plot thickens!
33. Do you know who her mother is now? Comments? Yes, I found it interesting that Helen of Troy would’ve been included in the warrior women. Now waiting for Joan of Arc to show up somewhere in the Valkyrie ranks.
34. Do you think Garreth and Lucia have something going on between them? I think this may be a set-up for a later book.
35. Emma has previously declared herself as someone who avoids conflict, but is increasingly becoming more provacative and surprising herself by how bold she is. Head-butting the vampire in the fight, throwing shampoo bottles at Lachlain. Why do you think that is? I think she’s been taken well out of her comfort zone and is finding the freedom to be herself, without worrying about her aunts expectations of her. I’m wondering if her drinking the Lykaen’s blood “from the source” may also be making her stronger?
36. Now that Emma is seeing her memories of her Aunts in a different light, does that change your impression of them and how they've treated her? A little bit. I think they’ve really tried their best to look out for her in their way, it’s just that they are so different. I found it interesting that she related so well to the aunt who couldn’t touch because they both felt disconnected from the coven.
37. Do you think Lachlain will leave Emma to seek his revenge on the vampires? I think it’s something he has to do for himself. If she tries to stop him, he’d resent her.
38. Were you surprised that Lachlain knew her feeding from him was what was impeding his leg from healing? Yes. Shows a sacrifice on his part, he’s weakened because of her.
39. One of the keys to writing is ending a chapter in a way that makes the reader want to continue on to the next. The final line of Ch. 20 " 'You bloody bitch!' a woman screamed from the gallery downstairs." Were you able to stop reading, or did you have to continue on to find out what was going on? I had to keep going!

33. Helen of Troy wasn't considered a warrior though, was she? Just a stunningly beautiful woman who fell in love with the prince of Troy?
34. I'd missed that she knew his name, will have to go back and re-read that part! This is one of the things I love about buddy-reads, other people catch the things I skimmed past... I thought he'd come out of nowhere because he'd smelled her as his mate like Lachlain smelled Emma above the catacombs.
39. It's a very readable book, isn't it?!
@Susan re:post 103
LOL! I've not tried answering a set of questions from my phone, more kudos to you!
35. You're right! She is becoming more independant, it's great to see.
39. LOL!! You got hooked in! That's a good thing. Will you go straight to the next book, d'ye think, or will you wait a little while before reading the next one?
You ladies crack me up! My daughter sneaks into the bathroom with a book when I've nagged her to do some chores. What do you do when your kids do something you yourself used to do when you were little?

As for what I do when my children do things I use to, I usually have to go in the other room and laugh. On occasion, I have called my mom to apologize ;)

The whole surprised me in a good way. Emma is coming into her own, and her growing confidence in herself and in Lachlain is wonderful to see.
41. Emma finally learned the truth that she's his mate. Did her response surprise you? Why or why not? I knew she was going to be pissed that he lied, and I actually liked that they started talking about the practicalities of their being mates. Makes a nice difference to the sighing HEA that usually come after such declarations in my readings.
42. What do you think Cassandra really wants? She knows she's not Lachlain's mate. Does she really want him or his power? Do you think Emma will take Cass up on her offer to help her escape? I think she really wanted Lachlain. She’s attracted to him and still hasn’t found her mate.
43. Bowen gave Emma some important advice. Will she listen? Yes. I think she will once she’s thought about it.
44. Emma had another of her "dreams". It took hearing it, several times, and her finally putting the dreams together for it to sink in. Do you think she'll treat Lachlain differently now? Well she should, she’s got to empathise with him now when she’s seeing things from his point of view.
45. At the end of ch 24 he's given her a gift and she's noticed he's cut himself. Do you think he's trying to sway her? Will it work? I think he wants things to settle down between them. I think he cares for her and doesn’t like the constant discord. As he said, he needs her to “cleave” to him and he’ll do whatever he needs to, to make that happen.

@CaroB, totally can relate to the unexpected company! Have a brother-in-law staying at my house. A mother-in-law at a hotel (thank goodness...hehehe) and a sister-in-law with niece and nephew also at hotel. Plus a husband home all week. My house is much more crowded than I'm used to right now!
Helen of Troy was "the face that launched 1000 ships" she was a beautiful woman, possibly a princess? That was kidnapped and therefore started a war because 1000 ships were sent after her. She was not a warrior but supposed to be very beautiful. However never given any "magical powers" in any stories involving her, so I liked the intersting twist the author put on her. But now that you mention it I could totally see Joan of Arc as a Valkyrie! LOL
35. I think simply drinking "live blood" is bringing out her vamp strengths, and drinking Lykae blood is making her that much more stronger.
My 9 year old son has recently found a book series he loves and it's so great to see him learning how to love reading! He even chooses his books over his Nintendo DS *gasp* and has said he's saving up his allowance money to buy the box set rather than the video game he wanted. I'm so proud!
As for when they do things I used to do, I'm with Susan, I do my best not to laugh and encourage them :)

32. First line of Ch. 17 "Your brother's in Louisiana, my liege." Did you make the connection right away?
When I first read the book? No, I don’t think I did.
33. Do you know who her mother is now? Comments?
Yes. But this took me a long time -- considering that her name is on the back of the book synopsis.
34. Do you think Garreth and Lucia have something going on between them?
Yup.
35. Emma has previously declared herself as someone who avoids conflict, but is increasingly becoming more provocative and surprising herself by how bold she is. Head-butting the vampire in the fight, throwing shampoo bottles at Lachlain. Why do you think that is?
I think some of it is she’s on her own, discovering herself and becoming more independent. I think her standing up to Lachlain is imperative. Also, there is the fact she’s drinking his blood.
36. Now that Emma is seeing her memories of her Aunts in a different light, does that change your impression of them and how they've treated her?
A little.
37. Do you think Lachlain will leave Emma to seek his revenge on the vampires?
I’m keeping my lip zipped.
38. Were you surprised that Lachlain knew her feeding from him was what was impeding his leg from healing?
Nope. He is putting her first; I gotta love a man like that.
39. One of the keys to writing is ending a chapter in a way that makes the reader want to continue on to the next. The final line of Ch. 20 " 'You bloody bitch!' a woman screamed from the gallery downstairs." Were you able to stop reading, or did you have to continue on to find out what was going on?
Yes! What a place for us to take a break, LOL!
Susan’s Questions for Chapters 21-24
Her aunts would be proud of her, yes? Some of their training rubbed off. It is so neat to see Emma come into her own. I LOVE that she asked for “retaliation.”
41. Emma finally learned the truth that she's his mate. Did her response surprise you? Why or why not?
Ah. Lachlain! Yes, the truth is out. In some ways she took it better than I thought she would.
42. What do you think Cassandra really wants? She knows she's not Lachlain's mate. Does she really want him or his power? Do you think Emma will take Cass up on her offer to help her escape?
I think she figures, after waiting almost 1200 years, he’ll take her as a substitute. I think it is a little of both. I’m keeping my lip zipped again.
43. Bowen gave Emma some important advice. Will she listen?
I hope so. It will be good for them both to deal with their feelings honestly.
44. Emma had another of her "dreams". It took hearing it, several times, and her finally putting the dreams together for it to sink in. Do you think she'll treat Lachlain differently now?
Hmmmm. I think each time she has one of her “dreams” she becomes more understanding of Lachlain and how long he has longed for her.
45. At the end of ch 24 he's given her a gift and she's noticed he's cut himself. Do you think he's trying to sway her? Will it work?
Oh yeah. He is being very devious. And …maybe, LOL!

I'll respond to your posts later tonight or tomorrow. Sorry. Thanks for worrying about me.

#40 – It was HOT! And a great lead up.
#41 – I think you are right, Tracey, I think she was bother that she wasn’t his mate too. I think that is part of the reason for her anger when she does find out.
#42 – I agree; she doesn’t trust Cass much.
#43 – Bowen has his own story coming up. I think book #4, Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night, and it is really a wonderful love story. Cole takes one of my Romancelandia Don’ts, turns it on its ear, and makes me cheer for the outcome.

#41 – You and Tracey, LOL! You both wanted that action to keep going. Me too!
#42 – I think Cass wants the power, but I think she is also attracted to him. I mean, what’s not to like? LOL! But she doesn’t really care for him, or she’d want him to find his true mate.
#44 – Mind Meld!
#45 – LOL!

#33 – Joan of Arc? LOL!
#34 – I think you are right about a set up for Garreth & Lucia.
#35 – I think drinking from the source is making her stronger too; especially since it is her mate.
#36 – Her aunt Daniela? Yes she is part ice fey.
#39 – I totally understand why you had to keep reading!

#45 – I think he wants to “deflower” her before the full moon! He is afraid he’ll hurt her with his uncontrolled passion.

46. At this stage, do you think Emma is resisting Lachlain for herself, as a power play, or because she doesn’t want to disappoint her aunts ?
47. Were you surprised at Emma’s boldness and the lengths (pun intended!) she’d go to, to escape?
48. At the beginning of chapter 26, Emma starts hearing voices in her head. What did you think that was?
49. OMG, was that scene in the forest HOT or too rough? Was this how you thought it would first happen?
50. They’re finally talking! About family, and histories and revenge and living together. For me, this adds as much intimacy to the budding relationship as the scene in the forest, if not more. What about you?
51. Why has Emma still not told Lachlain about her seeing his memories?

I think she's geniunely torn, not playing "hard-to-get" :)
47. Were you surprised at Emma’s boldness and the lengths (pun intended!) she’d go to, to escape?
I was definitely shocked that a virgin would be so inventive. However she had earlier in the book admitted to watching late-night Cinemax which I'm sure can be very educating even to the unexperienced. I was disappointed that she was trying to get away, but so glad when that whole scenario shifted to something entirely.
48. At the beginning of chapter 26, Emma starts hearing voices in her head. What did you think that was?
I think it was the "Instint" guiding her.
49. OMG, was that scene in the forest HOT or too rough? Was this how you thought it would first happen?
HOT!!!! I expected it to be rough, he's a Lykae afterall. I loved that she loved it! As long as it's consensual rough is great :D
50. They’re finally talking! About family, and histories and revenge and living together. For me, this adds as much intimacy to the budding relationship as the scene in the forest, if not more. What about you?
I loved the whole domestic bliss angle. Watching movies together and bonding. Definitely added to the overall view of their relationship being more than just physical.
51. Why has Emma still not told Lachlain about her seeing his memories?
Perhaps it is related to how she often feels like a "freak" and doesn't want to admit to another oddity about herself.

Here's my answers :)
46. At this stage, do you think Emma is resisting Lachlain for herself, as a power play, or because she doesn’t want to disappoint her aunts ? I think she's resisting so she doesn't disappoint her aunts. I get the impression she's felt like a disappointment to them her whole life because she's half vampire and she's considered weak by her own standards and theirs. By her accepting Lachlain, it's just another check in the "not like us" column.
47. Were you surprised at Emma’s boldness and the lengths (pun intended!) she’d go to, to escape? Very surprised! She's not as innocent as she claimed to be LOL
48. At the beginning of chapter 26, Emma starts hearing voices in her head. What did you think that was? I think it was some sort of connection to Lachlain that was guiding her. Definitely instinct, maybe something his blood imparted to her?
49. OMG, was that scene in the forest HOT or too rough? Was this how you thought it would first happen? *whispers* I was hoping it would happen like that. Seriously, I thought it was HOT. And like Tracey said, as long as it's consensual, it's all good. Tracey and I had a big discussion about another book with a wolf chasing a virgin into the forest when she ran and when he caught her it wasn't consensual and I was totally disgusted with it. This was very different.
50. They’re finally talking! About family, and histories and revenge and living together. For me, this adds as much intimacy to the budding relationship as the scene in the forest, if not more. What about you? I also think this adds to the intimacy in their relationship. It's not to see that it's not just physical. Lachlain has waited for his mate, and now he's got her to share EVERYTHING with.
51. Why has Emma still not told Lachlain about her seeing his memories? I'm not sure. Maybe she wants to keep them to herself. She's worried about seeing him with another woman and maybe she's afraid that he'd worry about her seeing that too.

49. Couldn't have put it better myself!
51. I hadn't thought of that! It makes sense she woudln't want to give him another reason to think of her as something to be disgusted with.
@ Susan re:post#147
46. I got that vibe too.
49. Which book is that?

Scent of Darkness by Christina Dodd is the book I was talking about. When that happened, I almost put it down and didn't finish. I kept thinking, "this just can't be the way I read it". But it was.
