I like the quote but not enough to get into ANOTHER firestorm.

We might not allow complete poems but there is no shortage of complete poems in the quotes database. Like this one with 21000 likes

Marie (mariethea) | 20 comments Sorry, I'm not sure about changing quotes, I think this is the right place?

So I found this quote, which is apparently commonly misattributed to Lincoln, but originates from Artemus Ward but may not have come into its current form until Max Beerbohm's novel Zuleika Dobson.

Should it belong to Ward, or Beerbohm? It probably shouldn't continue to be attributed to Lincoln.

message 458: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments There are two more versions of the not-Lincoln quote, both attributed to Muriel Spark from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

vicki_girl | 2764 comments Merged the quotes in 475; Fixed 476.

Not sure what to do about attribution in 474/475. Marie, do you have sources that could be checked/reviewed? Banjomike, for that one, it is slightly different, and it is in the book. I'm not sure if we usually merge them in that case. I think I will update the Muriel Spark quote to be the actual text from the book though.

"Old" version of Muriel Spark's quote:

For people who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like.

Updated version:

"For those who like that sort of thing," said Miss Brodie in her best Edinburgh voice, "That is the sort of thing they like."

♥ Rebecca ♥ | 203 comments Can you attribute this quote to Born Wicked?

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/62725...

Attribute this to Eden?

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/57119...

And delete this one?

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/62711...

One small typo in this one.

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/59983...

“I will love you, Meena," he said fiercely, "until the end of time. I will never stop loving you. My life, before I met you, was nothing. Can you understand that? My life was nothing, meant nothing, even if I may not have known it. And then you came along, and suddening, everything I knew, or thought I knew, was turned upside down. I will never be the same again. How could I be? You have shown me what it is to love, to feel and laugh and, yes, even to feel alive again. So whether you choose to be one with me or not, I will go on loving you, Meena, even after you are a rotting corpse in the ground. But, Meena, I would like to do whatever I can to prevent you from turning into a corpse. I think I mentioned that before.”

And in this one.

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/62286...

“Who knew that you would be The One," I smile, "which I guess makes me your Trinity."

"My Amidala."

"Your Zira."

"My Sylvia."

"Your..." I scour my brain, trying to remember some other great sci-fi love interest.

"Ha! I'm your Saphira," I settle back smugly, only for Trevor to start laughing.

"Saphira is a dragon.”

I guess you dont have to delete it. I just cant remember why I added it. Its nothing special, but its no big deal. If it is staying it should be attributed to Born Wicked as well. And do you mean 'suddenly' was italicized? Possibly. I dont remember.

vicki_girl | 2764 comments Marie wrote: "Well, here's the discussion in the book The Quote Verifier: Who Said What, Where, and When according to Google's book search."

Okay, I changed the Lincoln quote to Max Beerbohm, since that wording most closely matched what was already in place. I also added a tag to note that it is commonly mis-attributed. (If there is a better way to do this let me know.)

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/16867...

Since Artemus Ward is credited for originating the witticism, I added his quote as a new item.

It's from Ulysses, not The Critical Writings. (The books to select from column was blank but somehow I chose the wrong one).

Thanks

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. :)

Could I have just this one thing fixed, too? (see below) Rhys' part should be in italics since his voice is in her head:

“Oh, my God. What was she thinking?! Sex - even superior mind-blowing sex - wasn't worth not being able to see again. Then again...
Rhys chuckled in her ear, his hand splayed across her belly. Interesting train of thought. Shit, I knew I was good, but to the point of wishing you were blind? Damn, I'm a god!

Again...thanks so much!

Gayle (goodreadscomgayle_moore-morrans) | 1 comments I have just been granted librarian status and attempted to add an ebook version to my husband Ian Moore-Morrans' book, From Poverty to Poverty: A Scotsman Encounters Canada and then combine all three versions of that book. Banjomike | 5166 comments What caused this? I know there have been discussions on the Marilyn Monroe quote "I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure..." but have we now got proof that she didn't say it?

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8630-...

I spent hours searching and got nowhere. I don't disagree with giving it to "Unknown" but I would love to know the source.

message 486: by Melody (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments If it is Unknown - then shouldn't it be deleted?

message 487: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments Melody wrote: "If it is Unknown - then shouldn't it be deleted?"

Not in my book. Some of the best quotes have no known author. I'm just wondering what tipped the balance against MM.

message 488: by Melody (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments I thought that we only allowed authors and notable people. Looked at the librarian manual and we really don't address this though. It has been discussed numerous times in this discussion thread. Why oh why would we allow Unknown when we don't allow regular people to put their quotes? Seems to me this allows ANY item unless it is wrongly attributed to a source.

Melody wrote: "If it is Unknown - then shouldn't it be deleted?"

Yes, unless it is from a specific book with an Unknown author.

message 490: by Melody (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments It was a goodreads' employee who changed the quote to unknown. Actually they changed it to unknown author and a librarian changed it to unknown. But still - that makes me uneasy about deleting it.

message 491: by Vicky (last edited Sep 21, 2012 09:02AM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments I moved it from Unknown Author to Unknown because I was working on getting rid of the redundant "Unknown Author" author. I didn't even notice that it was previously attributed to anyone else. As a side note... I find it odd that an employee moved it to "Unknown Author" instead of Unknown.

I tried to do some searching but couldn't find anything that either confirms or denies Marilyn Monroe.
