The book was about the Mexican railway strike in the 50's. The author did have a tendency to go be uneven in her use of time. But since it was a historical novel, it was generally easy to follow. I enjoyed it and learned some Mexican history as well.

Lost Horizon is a wonderful book. Who wouldn't want to live in Shangri-la?

Holy cow, this book is getting real intense really fast. Gone from spooky, to scary, to downright diabolical. And I'm only 158 pages in!

In case you're interested in Mali and biography/history novels, I suggest reading any novels by Amadou Hampate Ba if you find them translated in English.

Enjoyed it so much that we decided to put it up as a free offer, in exchange for a review for our recently revamped website...
Some travel books are accounts of journeys to extraordinary places, and as such, we make allowances for the quality of the writing. Discovery Road however, was reviewed in the 'late' Independent thus: "The power comes from the excellence of the writing." And Sir Ranulph Fiennes was impressed enough to say: "Readers will be inspired to reach out and follow their own dreams."
We are extremely proud of this book and are eager for the story to reach as many people as possible. So, we are giving away - yes, free, gratis - a copy for anyone who will commit to giving it a review.

The second book by chronological or publication order?
Either way I love Narnia.
I just finished Suite Francaise... Now Im going to read The Master and Margarita.

I'm reading it right now. It is a magical fantastical trip. I'm 76% through it and I will definitely read it again.

I also have The Trigger: Hunting the Assassin Who Brought the World to War by Tim Butcher on the go as my nonfiction read, about Gavrilo Princip and political movements in the early C20th Balkans more generally. It's very accessible and has much more travelogue elements than I expected, not that that's a bad thing.

It was written by a friend of my late husband who, together with him, was working as a criminologist in the San Francisco area. Duane (the author) and Don (my late husband) believed they knew who the east area rapist was after long days and nights of research - but this person has not been detained and the crimes remain unsolved.
Terror at 3am is that story. It's a fast-paced, gripping novel about the individuals who tracked him down and the perpetrator and how he got away with these crimes.
Based on real life events, this novel is such a well written and gripping story that I couldn't put it down.
