Gabrielle Yetter (grichard) | 2 comments I have just finished reading Terror at 3am (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...) which is an incredible page turner and great murder mystery book.

It was written by a friend of my late husband who, together with him, was working as a criminologist in the San Francisco area. Duane (the author) and Don (my late husband) believed they knew who the east area rapist was after long days and nights of research - but this person has not been detained and the crimes remain unsolved.

Terror at 3am is that story. It's a fast-paced, gripping novel about the individuals who tracked him down and the perpetrator and how he got away with these crimes.

Based on real life events, this novel is such a well written and gripping story that I couldn't put it down.

Patrick Murphy (patrickmm) | 3 comments I am reading "Florence and Me" by Elaine Bertolotti. She is an American who has lived in Italy for many years. It's a fun little book, easy and pleasant, with a lot of usable information and a genuine, respectful tone... I'm a male of 59 years, and find it a great read to share with children as well.

How are you liking Elena Poniatowska? I read Leonora by Elena Poniatowska Leonora by her, and it was really hard to follow. She did a good job incorporating surrealist writing into it, since she was describing a surrealist painter, but it made the story really hard to follow. I wonder what her style is like in other books.

The book was about the Mexican railway strike in the 50's. The author did have a tendency to go be uneven in her use of time. But since it was a historical novel, it was generally easy to follow. I enjoyed it and learned some Mexican history as well.

Eye Books (eye-books) | 7 comments Recently I re-read Discovery Road
Enjoyed it so much that we decided to put it up as a free offer, in exchange for a review for our recently revamped website...

Some travel books are accounts of journeys to extraordinary places, and as such, we make allowances for the quality of the writing. Discovery Road however, was reviewed in the 'late' Independent thus: "The power comes from the excellence of the writing." And Sir Ranulph Fiennes was impressed enough to say: "Readers will be inspired to reach out and follow their own dreams."
We are extremely proud of this book and are eager for the story to reach as many people as possible. So, we are giving away - yes, free, gratis - a copy for anyone who will commit to giving it a review.
Please get in touch and become a friend of Eye Books...

message 1439: by Jazz • Min (new)

Jazz • Min (wordsmin) | 2 comments I'm reading My Beautiful Friend by Elena Ferrante! This is the first book that I've read by her and I'm only about 100 pages in but I'm enjoying it enough that I think I'll pick up the other books in her Neapolitan series as well. I stumbled upon this book by chance, just a week after watching a glowing video review which introduced me to the author, when someone in my building left a pristine copy in the 'free' area of our front lobby. A great find! I think this may be the first book that I've read by an Italian author.

message 1441: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 2 comments Currently reading Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter and loving it. I've read some of her short stories but never finished a novel by her.

I also have The Trigger: Hunting the Assassin Who Brought the World to War by Tim Butcher on the go as my nonfiction read, about Gavrilo Princip and political movements in the early C20th Balkans more generally. It's very accessible and has much more travelogue elements than I expected, not that that's a bad thing.
