I can't imagine that it will be light reading, but my community is now 10% Somali refugee and I have many Somali friends, so I think it is time for me to read about the refugee camps where many of them grew up.

message 1380: by Fem (last edited Feb 25, 2016 03:04AM) (new)

Fem (femswan) | 2 comments I'm really interested in reading IraqiGirl: Diary of a Teenage Girl in Iraq too. Since my visits to several countries in North Africa and the Middle East I've started reading (auto)biographies from those areas. It's amazing how many misconceptions arose during my time there which are only getting resolved now I'm taking the time to understand a different worldview/mindset.

Right now I'm reading Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody, set in Iran. But, unfortunately, I'm not so excited about it... :(

message 1381: by Carole (new)

Carole | 9 comments One of the books I am currently reading is "Wayfaring Stranger ", by James Lee Burke. This book travels through the American South , a world very different from the Midwest where I live. There is s stop over in France during WW2. The U.S. is so big, different regions need to be translated. This author usually sets his books in Cajun Country, Louisiana, or the American West, Montana. The descriptions in his books are so vivid, you are almost there .
I am also currently reading the newest book by Jhumpa Lahiri,"In Other Words". It is in Italian, with a dual language format in English. I can read Italian fairly well, so am really enjoy it. Lahiri fell in love with Italian and moved her family to Rome. She said she wanted to immerse herself totally in another language and culture. I have read and love all of her books, especially "The Namesake."

message 1382: by Carole (new)

Carole | 9 comments I just started reading, "The Last 6 Million Minutes", by John Burdett. It is set in Hong Kong in 1997, and the title refers to the final time period just before the transfer of Rule from England to China....the last 6 million minutes and there were 6 million inhabitants at that time, 1 minute for each. They stood in the street watching a big clock in a shop window, counting down the seconds until it hit the final 6 million seconds.
I must say the descriptions of Hong Kong are most vivid. It begins with a description of the black sky and ribbon clouds of a Typhoon about to hit while they are out at sea. Then they describe how Hong Kong streets were laid out with no plan and how crowded it is. An important aspect of the story is the anxiety the people feel about the switch from a benign dictator, England to a real dictator China. So far the plot, a triple murder is quite gory, hearing about the flies that find a body even far out at sea, etc. The detective "Charlie" Chan Siu-Kai is Eurasian, half Chinese half Irish. I have read 3 other books by this author, which I liked, but so far this is the best.

I so wanted to visit Hong Kong and was sure once it was returned to the Chinese I would never get a chance. As a result I watched the transfer avidly. I may have to try this book.

message 1388: by Moushine (new)

Moushine Zahr | 86 comments I am currently reading "the dark road" by Ma Jian (China). I am more than half way there. Like the title says, this book shows a real dark, negative, and pessimistic image of the lives of peasants immigrating to the city. It's not one of my favorite book.

Lorraine Petkus Ireland. I just finished reading Faithful Place by Tana French as a mystery it was a dud for it was easy to figure out who done it. But the depiction of a poor Irish neighborhood and the people living there was very good
