You're right, you aren't the only one who enjoyed it and that's great. I wish I loved it. But my problem was the ending. And also the fact that they revealed the biggest spoiler before it was supposed to. And Magnus didn't at all do well. I don't feel he's a good Magnus in the first place. I've seen mixed reviews all over fb. Thankfully I'm not alone in my disappointment. It's mixed, and the critics hate it too, which they hat everything. But this was the first time I agreed with them. I'll just stick with the books and my imagination that can't be ruined.

Annie Brewer (anniebrewer) | 2351 comments So they changed minor scenes...

No Rapheal, the Vamp who lets them into Hotel Dumort to find Simon
He doesn't change into a rat, instead he gets kidnapped...WTF! Also he gets bit, but that doesn't happen until book 2.
Clary kills the demon in her house, but instead Jace does it in the movie...seriously?
Simon saves the gang from the demon that is Madame Dorthea, it's his "moment" but instead, one of the others does it because he's not even there. That was wrong. The wolf pack goes into the institute and fights....they're NOT allowed in the institute. Are you effing serious? Hodge takes the cup and gives it to Valentine, which in the book he flees the place because he's finally free. And he's a traitor. In the movie, he is made to be the hero and he stays and fights with them. Ummmmm hell to the no. Valentine is supposed to kidnap Jace and leave the institute, instead he stays and fights him. In which the whole brother and sister thing is ruined, when Hodge tells him they're not really related. That's a huge no no...they don't find out until book 3. But V wants to hurt them and keep them apart and tell them they're bro and sis. OMG I can go on. The action sucked, the acting was weak, the frickin portal looked stupid. Ah! It was such crap! I'm not even going to see the rest.

Annie Brewer (anniebrewer) | 2351 comments Sorry I suck at the spoiler tags or whatever so unless you reallllllly wanna know, then don't read. And if you do, my bad. You'll thank me later though, for saving you a trip since quite a few of you don't like the series that much. But die hard fans like me hating the movie is pretty irritating. Oh well, you can't like 'em all. :/

Well, I am glad they changed the ending. Thats the main reason why I cant love the books. They saved it for me. I didnt really notice any other changes worth mentioning, except for making all the characters more likable (except for Magnus, his acting was kinda bad). The movie probably would have been more successful if no one had read the books.

Exactly! I feel that movie adaptations can't live up to the books most times, if ever. I didn't enjoy the Twilight books, but I liked the movies. But then again, even some that hadn't read the books were having trouble following the plot because they didn't explain anything. The scenes were jumbled and they jumped around and didn't give any backstory. So really, it's just mixed with this movie. I hate that they gave the twist away. That should've happened later. It was a huge let down.

I was actually trying to make an opposite point. I have always been easily able to separate source material and adaptation in my mind. I even loved the Eragon movie which butchered one of my most favourite book series of all time. Its still a great movie which I have seen countless time. I feel like readers usually have unrealistic expectations.

And I feel like if they had not given the ending away ppl would have been rather turned off by it. The purpose of making an adaptation is to reach a larger audience, and I dont think the general public would have been as accepting of an incestuous relationship as the more niche readers. Even if that is not true, it makes sense for the producers to not want to risk it.

Although, I am ok with agreeing to disagree.

Wow, between you and Laura, I'm feeling like such a horrible book fanatic. I can't remember a lot of specific details about even my ABSOLUTE favorite books, but the two of you are like book encyclopedias!! It's shameful, but I'm finally at the point where the books are all starting to meld a bit, or at least the more technical stories with a lot of plot twists.

Now see, I couldn't really get into this series because the characters didn't do much for me, and I didn't like how the first book ended. So as much as it may get me yelled at (sorry, Annie, don't hate me hun!!), I may end up liking the movie more! Not for attention to detail, of course. =)

I only remember details about TMI and TID. I've read both series numerous times (TMI more times though), so don't feel bad. I normally don't pay attention to detail really. But I can't but take in everything about this world. I just love it to pieces. That's why I don't think I can watch the movies anymore. They'll always be different from how I see it and I'd like to keep the images the way it's intended. lol. Otherwise, I don't remember much other series. Maybe the Covenant series I remember some. Oh and of course my favorite contemp books. You can ask me about Forbidden and I remember every detail. Love that book so hard. I'm just a proud nerd in some ways ;)

Dispite the changes, I actually really enjoyed it...I can understand why that would annoy others, but they had to change it for the audience, because it's a big book and some of the things (like the brother and sister thing) would put the audience off, so they had to make it less...weird? And the Simon thing...yeah, i'm not really sure why he wasn't a rat, but I don't think it really mattered, it didn't change much at all. But I definately understand why they changed the brother/sister thing.

message 30168: by Annie (new)

Annie Brewer (anniebrewer) | 2351 comments I was just naming the rat thing as an example. It was a minor thing. And I figured the bro/sis thing would happen before I saw it, I just hate being right. It was more a lot of different things that disappointed me, not just one thing. There were more things different that I didn't include but I'm too tired to think or care anymore. lol.

Glad you enjoyed it. I guess I shouldn't have had high expectations or recently re-read the book, I probably wouldn't have been so perturbed.

They probably just changed the rat thing to condense the story and make it more easily filmable.
