Lina CaroB's Questions for 21-25

30. Tru seems to be looking to Mason as a role model. Do you think this is a good choice for him? At the same time, he seems angry with Ange for being such a good mother. Can you understand this emotion? I don't think he's angry at her for being a good mum, I thought it was more because he thinks she smothers Penny, and with everything that's happening, she needs to be learning to survive on her own.

31. Jenna can't seem to understand Mason's tenderness in private and his unwillingness to show emotion during times of stress. Do you think she is being unfair in her judgment of his motivation? I think she's not really doing too much to try and see where he might be coming from... having said that, he's not giving her much to go on, etiher.

32. The way the authors describe the newfound powers Jenna and Mason seem to be gaining seems very animalistic (i.e. he could smell her fear, the primal tingles they get, her heightened sense of hearing, and the way they can go out of body to connect with the creatures). Do you think this is foreshadowing of some sort? Yes, and also possibly linking it back to the father's letter, where the eight characters were likened to different animals.

33. Mason insists several times that the animals learn and adapt very quickly, and that he doesn't know how much they remember from before. Do you think they have memories from before they turned? Would that impact the way you see the creatures? I don't think they have cognitive memories, but I think there may be some semblance of the old personalities that remain.. It would impact the way I see them, but only in a very visceral sense. I'd still fight them in a them-or-me scenario.

34. No power. Do you think they made the right decision in going to the station in the first place? What do you think about the supply run they are going on now? Will we get to see what is happening back at the station? Frought with danger but obvioulsy meant to bring about some other action that will further the story.

35. Jenna's motivation seems a little clearer after we hear that she doesn't want to be like her mother. Are there some things about your parents/family's experiences that you definitely don't want to repeat? Hell yes! 'nuff said :-)

36. The relationship between Mason and Jenna is so volatile at this point. What did you think of her attack on him and the sexy scuffle that followed? Was Mason a little too rough with her? I think these two are reacting mostly on instinct with each other and that seems a bit overwhelming. Rough can be good *grin*

37. Finally some honesty between our hero and heroine! Do you think there are better days ahead for them? There better be! But they really have to learn to communicate better.

Lina CaroB's Answers for Chapters 26-30:

38. Mason actually shared? I'm all agog! You? I hadn't expected it but it was definitely needed.

39. Was Mason testing her, when he offered that they could run away and never return to the station for others? I don't think so, at least not consciously. He didn't really expect her to agree, I think he just wanted to let her know it was an option and that she is his main priority.

40. Yeesh! The howling of those beasts reminds me of the scene from Jurassic Park where the raptors communicate with each other. I think that'd send shivers down my spine.

41. I hate it that we're doled out pittances about Mitch the prophet. Can't we have been told the whole story? I agree. I really liked the prologue in this book, but I think it would've been great to have had the first chapter of backstory.

42. Huh.. So the people don't just turn into dogs or wolves. There's a whole variety of other animals.. even insects. What does this signify? Personality types? Sure, I guess we use animal characteristics to classify ourselves in lots of different ways (I'm thinking Chinese Zodiac and the American Indian totem animals) so maybe it's using that as some kind of basis.

43. So why didn't the beasts follow them into the village/town? Maybe they're more scared of what's in town... or maybe the author thought she''d let the poor characters have a break for a change.... I loved their time at the Home Improvement Centre!!

44. "Home. Oh God. Yes. But for Jenna, it was a person, not a place. It was Mason." Remember this, as you read ahead. Lol, gotcha!

45. Buying the theory about only evil people making through the transformation? What if edna could have made it and Mason never gave her the chance? I thought she did transform right before the dogs came and she'd transformed wrong, so her chances for making it were already reduced. I don't think only evil people, but I do think it's more based on instinctive behaviour, people who can adapt, not people who by their fear of the unknown would fight the change...

46. Oh, chapter 30 made me cry. What do you think will happen next? That was pretty sad, and and so unexpected coming from the chapters before! Jenna's going to change.

Heather (messybar) Heather's Answers for Chapters 26-30:

38. Mason actually shared? I'm all agog! You?

It had to happen at some point, just glad he finally wised up.

39. Was Mason testing her, when he offered that they could run away and never return to the station for others?
No, he was just desperate and wasn't thinking it all through. He has been in survival mode for so long, and it took him a lot of time to include others in that mode.

40. Yeesh! The howling of those beasts reminds me of the scene from Jurassic Park where the raptors communicate with each other. Scary, but its seems to be they communicate for sure.

41. I hate it that we're doled out pittances about Mitch the prophet. Can't we have been told the whole story?
I thought there was a lot of vagueness in this book, but I guess they all have to figure out how to live in this world and a set plan or direction may have closed them off to paths needed to travel.

42. Huh.. So the people don't just turn into dogs or wolves. There's a whole variety of other animals.. even insects. What does this signify? Personality types?
I was surprised by this while I was reading it, but looking back, I shouldn't have been. We all have different traits/tendencies.

43. So why didn't the beasts follow them into the village/town?
I think it was a comfort zone or like Jenna said about territory.

44. "Home. Oh God. Yes. But for Jenna, it was a person, not a place. It was Mason." Remember this, as you read ahead.
it was a sweet moment!

45. Buying the theory about only evil people making through the transformation? What if edna could have made it and Mason never gave her the chance?
I thought about that and I worried that she could have made it. I also thought at the time that only evil turning couldn't be true.

46. Oh, chapter 30 made me cry. What do you think will happen next?
It came out of the blue, but I thought it would have been Mason getting bit first though. Jenna has to stick around, so I think she's going to morph into something else.

~Megan~ (megadee) 38. Mason actually shared? I'm all agog! You?
I was proud of him!

39. Was Mason testing her, when he offered that they could run away and never return to the station for others?
I actually thought he was testing himself more. He put it out there knowing she'd shoot it down, and I think it kinda shocked him that he was on the same page. He's been all about survival for so long, but now he is learning to care again.

40. Yeesh! The howling of those beasts reminds me of the scene from Jurassic Park where the raptors communicate with each other. creepy!

41. I hate it that we're doled out pittances about Mitch the prophet. Can't we have been told the whole story?
I agree....wish the prologue would've had more background info on not just the world, but the characters too.

42. Huh.. So the people don't just turn into dogs or wolves. There's a whole variety of other animals.. even insects. What does this signify? Personality types?
I really do think it has something to do with personalities.

43. So why didn't the beasts follow them into the village/town?
I couldn't figure it out and really thought I'd missed something. Maybe they were thrown off by all the unsuccessful changes?

44. "Home. Oh God. Yes. But for Jenna, it was a person, not a place. It was Mason." Remember this, as you read ahead.
My favorite line from the book so far. Yes I admit it....I'm a sap and love the fluff!

45. Buying the theory about only evil people making through the transformation? What if edna could have made it and Mason never gave her the chance?
I didn't think of this until this question, but that is worrisome. I wonder if Mason knew because she languished so long? Jenna seemed to change very rapidly.

46. Oh, chapter 30 made me cry. What do you think will happen next?
So sad! I don't know but I'm reading ahead today....I have permission!!!

38. Mason actually shared? I'm all agog! You?
LOL! Yes, a little stunning.

39. Was Mason testing her, when he offered that they could run away and never return to the station for others?
Mind Meld! I wondered the same thing.

40. Yeesh! The howling of those beasts reminds me of the scene from Jurassic Park where the raptors communicate with each other.
Really!

41. I hate it that we're doled out pittances about Mitch the prophet. Can't we have been told the whole story?
True.

42. Huh.. So the people don't just turn into dogs or wolves. There's a whole variety of other animals.. even insects. What does this signify? Personality types?
I don’t know! I thought it was what they came into contact with or what bite them, but now…

43. So why didn't the beasts follow them into the village/town?
Good question!

44. "Home. Oh God. Yes. But for Jenna, it was a person, not a place. It was Mason." Remember this, as you read ahead.
All right.

45. Buying the theory about only evil people making through the transformation? What if Edna could have made it and Mason never gave her the chance?
I don’t think so. She turned inside out… but, you do raise another good question. I’ll have to go back and look to see if he waited to watch her transformation to see what would happen.

46. Oh, chapter 30 made me cry. What do you think will happen next?

#42 – Good point about the totems.

#43 – I was thinking there was something scary in the town – but I think you are right; the author gave the poor characters a much need break.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa Kay’s A’s to CaroB’s Q’s for Chapters 31-35

47. “Wrath and purpose fused into something new, harder than steel, more fluid than mercury. This new feeling transcended pain.” Do you think this passage, the purpose to save Mason, affected the results of Jenna’s change? What did you think of her mind snapping in two?
Oh, pretty good, C. Could be. I think that her desire to help Mason was a key ingredient. Interesting. Because I’ve thought of what the body would have to do when it shifts… but changing to an animal mind I never thought about.

48. Were you surprised at Mason’s reaction when he realized the wolf was Jenna?
That was pretty well written I thought. Very touching and with a sense of awe and yet loss & worry.

49. What do the cell differences between the rabid dogs and Jenna mean? How could this affect future changes /bitees? What about Dr Welsh’s resistance to magic? How will he adapt in this new world when everything needs a scientific explanation for him?
Well, the glow is a dead give-away that she is a “better” being. Interesting hypothesis; I don’t know. And, I don’t know what the upshot will be with Dr. W.

50. Any comments on how the group dynamics are changing? What do you think of the different roles everyone has to play?
I wondered if Ange & the doc where going to be an item. LMAO when Dr. W called Tru an a$$hole when he complained of being called a kid. Quite a complement, in Tru’s eyes. We are finally seeing who all of Mitch’s prophesies are turning out to be.

51. What’s significance of Penny’s first words being about the wolf, and her open friendliness to Jenna?
She likes her. I loved when she welcomed her into dinner.

47.
”Wrath and purpose fused into something new, harder than steel, more fluid than mercury. This new feeling transcended pain.”Do you think this passage, the purpose to save Mason, affected the results of Jenna’s change? What did you think of her mind snapping n two?
It was a complete transformation all based on the need for survival and for Jenna, Mason's survival means hers too.

48. Were you surprised at Mason’s reaction when he realised the wolf was Jenna?
I was and I wasn't. He has been fighting these "monsters" for so long, so to wrap his brain around her being something else was difficult to get a grasp on it. The "running" away from it surprised me though, I thought he would stand and fight it.

49. What do the cell differences between the rabid dogs and Jenna mean? How could this affect future changes /bitees? What about Dr Welsh’s resistance to magic? How will he adapt in this new world when everything needs a scientific explanation for him?
I'm not sure the cell differences means anything greatly here. It's very scientific and science doesn't seem to have much wait in this new world. I think if you're good before the changed, then a successful transformation will result in a "good" animal. Dr. Welsh will have to adapt like everyone else has up to this point. His world is a new world too.

50. Any comments on how the group dynamics are changing? What do you think of the different roles everyone has to play?
It's just interesting to see how the need for survival has brought them all to new level in themselves.

51. What’s significance of Penny’s first words being about the wolf, and her open friendliness to Jenna?
I think everyone see's Penny as the good in the group, so if she latches on to Jenna, then her being a wolf must be a good thing for them.

Yep. Later, they say that(view spoiler) Her mind thing made the shift feel more genuine.

48. Were you surprised at Mason’s reaction when he realised the wolf was Jenna?

Not really, she was the one thing keeping him sane and losing her may have made him react this way.

49. What do the cell differences between the rabid dogs and Jenna mean? How could this affect future changes /bitees? What about Dr Welsh’s resistance to magic? How will he adapt in this new world when everything needs a scientific explanation for him?

I think the author was trying to bridge the magic to a scientific explanation. Its like Heather said, if you were good, you shift into something good. Dr. Welsh will have definitely have to change if he wants to survive.

50. Any comments on how the group dynamics are changing? What do you think of the different roles everyone has to play?

Typical of any book/movie bringing people together from diverse walks of life.

51. What’s significance of Penny’s first words being about the wolf, and her open friendliness to Jenna?

Significance? That the wolf's going to be really important for their survival, maybe.

47.
”Wrath and purpose fused into something new, harder than steel, more fluid than mercury. This new feeling transcended pain.” Do you think this passage, the purpose to save Mason, affected the results of Jenna’s change? What did you think of her mind snapping n two?
I definitely think it played a role in Jenna's change. I wasn't too suprised about the two minds...I've seen similar things in other series. Especially Patricia Briggs' Alpha and Omega series...Charles is always having conversations with Brother Wolf in that one.

48. Were you surprised at Mason’s reaction when he realised the wolf was Jenna? I was a little confused by it. To be honest, I've been a little confused by both Jenna and Mason's reactions at different points in the book. I'm wondering if this has something to do with this being a joint effort between two different writers? Or is it just me who sees a little inconsistency?

49. What do the cell differences between the rabid dogs and Jenna mean? How could this affect future changes /bitees? What about Dr Welsh’s resistance to magic? How will he adapt in this new world when everything needs a scientific explanation for him?
I don't know what the cell differences mean, but I think if anyone can figure it out, it will be Chris. His book is next, so maybe we will learn more about that and also see how he learns to adapt to a new world.

50. Any comments on how the group dynamics are changing? What do you think of the different roles everyone has to play?
I don't have any specific comments, but I think this is one of the things that is so great about post-apocalyptic type stories. People think, say, and do things they never would have done before.

51. What’s significance of Penny’s first words being about the wolf, and her open friendliness to Jenna?
I think she knew it would happen all along! Has she mentioned Finn at this point? Anyone else who's finished wondering what the heck she's talking about?

Heather (messybar) Heather's Questions for Chapters 36-40

52. What did you think of Chris's reasoning/explanation for Jenna's successful shifting? Did they all second guess the judgement concerning Edna, as her must have experienced a pretty high jolt of trauma? Could she have made it?

53. What are your thoughts on this budding relationship between Ange and Chris? Do you think they are just grasping onto something to make all of this newness easier (especially with Chris's fears of being obsolete)?

54. Did you predict Mason's reactions, even after having Jenna back and apparently okay, and were they justified or was this his way of pushing away and controlling his environment?

55. What are we thinking of Jenna at this point? Is she handling the transition well? Has she fully grasped all that Mitch left behind for them to learn and build from? Is her new mental tone that Mason is the only thing of importance, at the sacrifice of the others, a lasting one?

56. I was a little put-off by this:
"He liked the distance—needed it, just as his body needed its grinding release." Thoughts on why he needed the distance if she was offering him the dominance.

57. After the beasts tried to get in, were you surprised by Chris and Ange's stance on death at her own hands rather than risking a beast attack?

58. Was Mason's reaction to close off the tunnel excessive? Also, was I the only one that felt like he was assuming too much and acting a little callous with Jenna (ex:him insisting on her acting as diversion in leaving the tunnels so he could place the bomb)?

59. Tell me I wasn't the only one shaking their head in bafflement at the role reversals right before the bomb went off between Mason and Jenna?

60. Does the theory of a traumatic episode in order to shift need tweaking after reading Chapter 40 and Jenna's delayed ability to shift?

Lina I thought Finn was a ghost, and that was why she had originally screamed and transported out of her room and into the men's... but now that I think of it, I don't know why I think that, lol.

I didn't realise it was two different authors, but it explains so much about the writing style!

52. What did you think of Chris's reasoning/explanation for Jenna's successful shifting? Did they all second guess the judgement concerning Edna, as her must have experienced a pretty high jolt of trauma? Could she have made it?
See again, you're making me feel bad because I didn't even think of poor Edna LOL! I still think she'd lingered too long to have had a successful transformation, but that may be just me trying to justify her death.

53. What are your thoughts on this budding relationship between Ange and Chris? Do you think they are just grasping onto something to make all of this newness easier (especially with Chris's fears of being obsolete)? I definitely think that. She seems older than him....am I right on that? Isn't she like 40 something? He seems young to me, but I'm not sure why.

54. Did you predict Mason's reactions, even after having Jenna back and apparently okay, and were they justified or was this his way of pushing away and controlling his environment? This is another instance where I was kind of confused. I thought he had accepted everything. With the way he was acting when he thought her dead, you would think he wouldn't hold anything back.

55. What are we thinking of Jenna at this point? Is she handling the transition well? Has she fully grasped all that Mitch left behind for them to learn and build from? Is her new mental tone that Mason is the only thing of importance, at the sacrifice of the others, a lasting one? I think "sister wolf" is messing with her brain, and she's confused about how to reconcile her humanity with her animal mind. She's definitely handling the transition better than I would. I'd be totally freaking out.

56. I was a little put-off by this: "He liked the distance—needed it, just as his body needed its grinding release." Thoughts on why he needed the distance if she was offering him the dominance. I was a little put-off by it as well. Again, this is where both of their characters feel inconsistent to me. After all they'd been through, I couldn't understand his need for distance or her allowing him to get away with it. She's never let him get away with anything before.

57. After the beasts tried to get in, were you surprised by Chris and Ange's stance on death at her own hands rather than risking a beast attack? No, I wasn't suprised....Ange is all about protecting that creepy kid LOL

58. Was Mason's reaction to close off the tunnel excessive? Also, was I the only one that felt like he was assuming too much and acting a little callous with Jenna (ex:him insisting on her acting as diversion in leaving the tunnels so he could place the bomb)? It didn't bother me overly much....closing off the tunnel seemed to be necessary, and there's no sense in both of them possibly dying down there. Isn't this what she's been asking for the whole book? Equality?

59. Tell me I wasn't the only one shaking their head in bafflement at the role reversals right before the bomb went off between Mason and Jenna? You weren't the only one....it was strange.

60. Does the theory of a traumatic episode in order to shift need tweaking after reading Chapter 40 and Jenna's delayed ability to shift? I thought the theory was that the FIRST shift had to be triggered by trauma. I think after that, they have to figure out how to do it on their own.
