I finished Carry the One, started and finished Ciao and started The Invisible Ones over the weekend. I am really enjoying The Invisible Ones so far, and a little over half way through.

Got to catch up on my giveaway wins to get to my Christmas presents. :)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Lori, how is the Audrey Hepburn book?

message 3453: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Kimberly, It's pretty good. It has some narrative by the author, but the bulk of it is Audrey's own words on various topics, like family, dancing, love, friendship, eating healthy and so on. Lots of lovely pictures too.

message 3454: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Oh, that sounds like something I'd love. I adore Audrey Hepburn. I'll definitely have to check it out.

message 3455: by Rayna (new)

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 59 comments I found How To Be Lovely in some random store (not a bookstore) a year or so ago and loved it. I pick it up every once in a while when I need some wisdom from Audrey :)

message 3456: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Kimberly, It was pretty good. I finished reading it just today.

message 3457: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I'm working on finishing The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. It's taken me forever to read, but I do enjoy it. Sometimes, I just like having a slower read.

message 3458: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Jess, I don't think there's anything wrong with taking a long time to read a book, especially if it is very long itself or very challenging. Congrats on your upcoming accomplishment.

message 3459: by Sara (new)

Sara I just finished Secrets and Shadows by Shannon Delany and started Angel Time by Anne Rice yesterday :)

Thanks, Lori! I feel like so many times anymore, people get caught up in how many books they can read and how fast. While I like a good challenge myself, sometimes I just like to kick back and take it slower, y'know?

message 3461: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Jess, I've noticed that too. What's the point of rushing through something if you're not even going to remember what happened. I just bought the book How to Read and Why, which I think will help me read more critically and truly savor what I'm reading.

I have the opposite reaction/expectation. I think really, I read that many? It never seems like that many. I usually remember all the books I read, at least a little bit, but I tend to "forget" those I didn't enjoy easier than the ones I did.

But, I will be first to admit, I am a hermit. I don't like to go out and do things. I much rather stay home and read. :) So I do have a lot more time than "normal" people to read.

That's interesting, Lori. You'll have to let me know how it works for you. I have a tendency to forget most of the details of the books I've read, which is sometimes nice when I go to re-read, but other times, I wish I remembered more.

Nothing wrong with being a hermit! I tend to hermit a lot. I do go out every so often, but I'm a homebody at heart.

Sara Jess wrote: "Tami wrote: "I have the opposite reaction/expectation. I think really, I read that many? It never seems like that many. I usually remember all the books I read, at least a little bit, but I tend to..."

I'm the same way. I will forget large parts of a book I read but I know I loved it. I am a total hermit and I embrace it, especially in the winter. I do go out ocasionally or have people come over but I love peace and quiet :)

message 3466: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 61 comments I just finished reading Emma and I've moved on to Sunday's at Tiffany by James Patterson. It seems like a super light read so I figured it would be a nice break from intense text books.

Anna, I'm doing the exact same thing. I've got so many books piled up that I haven't read it. It's such a waste so I'm just reading those right now.

message 3467: by Jessie Marie (new)

Jessie Marie (jessiemreads) Anna wrote: "2012 begins with a new resolution- I am not buying any books this year. I am going to concentrate on reading the many, many books that I have bought but not read..."

That's really great. I wish I had your willpower. I CANNOT prevent myself from buying every now and again. I can slow down my splurges though, I think. ;)

----

Just finished Divergent by Veronica Roth. I'm still working on Grave Situation by Alex Maclean if my Kindle will cooperate. Sometimes, I think that thing has a mind of it's own. In the meantime, if it's not working, I'm reading John Adams by David McCullough.

Wow Anna! Good for you! You have more willpower than I ever will! I've slowed down my book buying a lot, but I don't think I could go a whole year--good luck! :)

message 3469: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Anna, I'm impressed (like everyone else). I know I won't be able to cut out book buying altogether, so I resolved to just buy fewer books this year. My plan is to get through books by reading for half an hour each night. I started back to school/work on Monday and am still trying to find a schedule that works for me, so hopefully the reading will soon be integrated. I read about five pages last night before falling asleep.

I'm currently reading Sanctuary by Faulkner and War and Peace by Tolstoy. I'm giving myself all year to read the Tolstoy.

message 3470: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished Middlemarch by George Eliot. Now I'm reading Quo Vadis. I can't say I like it much, but since I started, I want to finish it.
Lori, good luck with War and Peace. One of the most difficult books I've read.

message 3471: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 61 comments I finished Sundays at Tiffany's. It was pretty much what I expected, super light. I'm now reading The Solitude of Prime Numbers by Paolo Giordano, no idea what to expect there.

message 3472: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments Ashley - I really enjoyed The Solitude of Prime Numbers! It's probably not for everyone though. Hope you enjoy!

message 3473: by Kayla (new)

Kayla (krs209) | 8 comments Im reading Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

message 3474: by Ana (new)

Ana | 65 comments I recently finished The Bride Collector by Ted Dekker and I really enjoyed it, I did a review on it if anyone is interested in seeing that. I'm currently reading Wuthering Heights for the first time, just started it so no comments yet. I'm also still working on The Vampire Lestat, which is good so far. I have this thing where I have one book that I read at night before bed and one that I read (usually on my nook) throughout the day, so that's why I'm reading two books at once.

message 3475: by Kayla (new)

Kayla (krs209) | 8 comments I'm reading The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins and also I'll Walk Alone by Mary Higgins Clark

message 3476: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm starting up my promiscuous reading habits again, moving from book to book without making a commitment. Right now, I'm focusing on Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?: The Carter Family & Their Legacy in American Music. I would like to find a non-fiction book. I think for my thesis, I'm going to have to read books I'm not terribly familiar with by Twain, Hemingway, and Kerouac. I'll probably start with The Dharma Bums because I KNOW I'm going to have to use it in my thesis.

message 3477: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 61 comments Daisy, I'm just a couple of chapters in, but I'm enjoying the Solitude of Prime Numbers so far. I've put it off to the side for now only because a ton of school reading came up, so I'm onto Song of the Revolution for class.

message 3478: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I started The Borrowers by Mary Norton for fun, and I also started The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara because I've been meaning to read it forever.

message 3479: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments I finished The Crown Conspiracy and started Avempartha. I'm liking this series, though The Crown Conspiracy started off reallly slow and I'm sad to say Avempartha is doing the same...

message 3480: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'm reading A Discovery of Witches. Just started it, but I think I'm going to really enjoy it.

message 3481: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookworm1987) Almost done with Anna and the French Kiss then going to read The White Queen

message 3482: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 604 comments I recently finished Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie and I loved it! It's been a while since I really enjoyed a contemporary romance. I'm going to have to check out more of her books.

I am currently reading Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber, but I'm not liking it very much. I don't really care for the main character, Raven. She comes across as selfish and kind of ditzy. I may not even finish it despite it being a short book. However, I'm also reading Switched by Amanda Hocking and it's really good so far.

message 3483: by Beks (new)

Beks (bekster15) I just finished reading the book A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar: A Novel. It was a nice one to read after all of the fluff I have recently been reading for fun. I can't wait to buy it.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I just finished A Discovery of Witches. I didn't like it as much as I wanted to.

I am now going to reread The Hobbit.

:( I bought A Discovery of Witches a month ago, sad you didn't like it so much!

message 3487: by C (new)

C (silvermoon76) I just finished The Virgin Suicidesand The Great Gatsbyover the weekend. Loved both.

I'm starting on Life Is Elsewhere, which I think I'm going to have a hard time with. I always find translated books a little more challenging.

message 3488: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nkb992) | 35 comments I've recently finished 3 books/plays for school (already! this semester is going to have lots of reading!):
Whatever Happened to Good and Evil?
El Gran Teatro Del Mundo (The Great Theater of the World)
Fuenteovejuna (Fuenteovejuna is the name of a village)

Currently reading for school:
Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics
One Hundred Years of Solitude
Born in Blood and Fire
La vida es sueño (Life is a Dream)

And my pleasure reading whenever I finally get around to it is The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

message 3489: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I started reading The Thorn Birds to get some fiction. I'm still keeping Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?: The Carter Family & Their Legacy in American Music close to me though. They're both nice breaks from my thesis research, which I'm already enjoying immensely.

message 3490: by Ana (new)

Ana | 65 comments I just finished A Girl's Guide to Dating a Geek (an early Valentine's Day gift from my boyfriend) and loved it! SO funny. I'm currently reading Wuthering Heights and The Vampire Lestat

My suitemate just read that book a couple months ago and she really enjoyed it. I put in on my TBR list as soon as she recommended it to me. I don't know when I'll get to it, though.
