I just started Outlander. . .in my defense I didn't know that it was historical ROMANCE! But I have to admit I'm hooked, even if I do have to hide it from my mom :-)

I understand your shame. I read it recently and LOVED it, even though I really didn't want to. :P

Out of the books I've read recently, Divergent really stands out. Hands down one of the most amazing books I've read.

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments The other day I started reading Suite Française. It feels like it's been on my to-read list forever! This morning I just started reading Crank.

message 3254: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I'm reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett and I'm a ball of emotions. My heart is breaking, my temper is flaring, I'm disgusted by the prejudice and hypocrisy, and crossing my fingers for the main characters.

~*I love Tea*~ | 124 comments I read the help earlier this year, it's a really good read. It's really insightful about the day to day going ons in that time. I can't wait for the movie to come out.

I LOVED that book! I felt the same way! It's a roller coaster! I hope you enjoy it though!

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I just started and finished The Lover's Dictionary. I have to say, it was exactly what I expected it to be. It was sweet, novel, a tiny bit heartbreaking, and relatively realistic. It was not exactly breathtaking or memorable, but it was an enjoyable quick read, even if it was self-consciously artsy every now and then. If you're in the mood for something light but not silly, I'd recommend it.

I just started The Eyre Affair. I'm only 30 pages in, so I don't really know what to expect yet. I'm not usually a fan of mysteries, but since this is mixed with science fiction and literature, I figured I should give it a try. Besides, I just read Jane Eyre recently, so it seemed fitting.

I am still in the middle of The Virgin in the Garden. It is a pretty slow-moving book so far, but since it's one of her first I think I can forgive her for that and try to enjoy it anyway. It does have some of her better qualities as well, like good characters and an extremely convincing setting. Still, I'm hoping I can make myself get through it within the next month or so before I have to go back home.

I am still in the very beginning of Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism. It's a good book so far, and very enlightening, but I'm just a bit weighed down right now, so I'm not really up for too many heavy reads at the moment. Hopefully I'll have a good day where I can just jump in and make some serious progress.

Up next: Dune by Frank Herbert, Bloodchild and Other Stories by Octavia Butler, The Four Quartets by T.S. Eliot, A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me edited by Kate Bernheimer, and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.

message 3258: by Annie (new)

Annie Hartman (anniebananie) | 242 comments I started This Common Secret: My Journey as an Abortion Doctor last night. Seems like it should be an interesting read. I love that it provides facts and statistics at the beginning of each chapter.

I have a bad habit of not being able to stick to a book after I finish one I really loved and I was really into I Know This Much Is True. So we shall see!

message 3259: by Tanja (new)

Tanja (_tanja) I just started reading The White Road, it's the fifth in Nightrunners series.
And I'm still trying to finish The A-List.

message 3260: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 01, 2011 11:57AM) (new)

I just finished The Book Thief and I'm now working on Marked.

message 3261: by Jennifer (last edited Jul 02, 2011 02:52PM) (new)

Jennifer (jennifer_b) I'm reading The Thirteenth Tale which means I'm a couple years behind the rest of the reading world. It's pretty good. I was in love with the first one hundred pages, but as I keep reading, it gets closer and closer to mediocre.

I've been dying to see this movie but I hate seeing movies before reading the book- is it worth the read?

Ya... I guess that after she wrote that, she got really into butchering meats and stuff like that. My mom isn't a vegetarian but she was grossed out by her later book.

message 3264: by Jenni (new)

Jenni (jentoyi) I'v just finished Dash & Lily's Book of Dares and getting right on to the last book of the Hunger Games serie: Mockingjay which I finally got to read now and not sooner because of my student-exchange programme in Shanghai^^

message 3265: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'm working on my usual reread of all of the Harry Potter books. I got a late start, so hopefully I'll have enough time to read them all.

Max Just got finished with Middlesex which I loved, and I'm onto American Pastoral now. I'm about 70% done with it, and I'm pretty much just forcing myself to finish it right now because I've read so much of it. Can't say I'm a fan.

Let me know what you think of that, I've picked it up several times but never actually initiated anything.

message 3274: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 604 comments I just finished one of my first-reads wins, The Time It Snowed in Puerto Rico. The author sent some island treats (coconut bars, sesame seed bars, coconut water) as well as printed recipes of meals mentioned in the book and a C.D. of Spanish Children's Songs. It put me in a good mood for the book, which I'm sure was the author's intention :)

I thought it was a really good coming-of-age novel, and I loved the descriptions of Puerto Rico. It made a great beach read.

Today I started Between Shades of Gray. I'm only 30 pages in so I can't say much about it, but so far I'm liking it.

message 3275: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished Flowers for Algernon which is filled with sadness that never lets up; I enjoyed reading it anyhow.

Just started Neverwhere. It is quite a visual read. So far I like the concept but feel like Gaiman doesn't do much with it - kind of like Stardust.

message 3276: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I felt the same way about Stardust. It's one of those rare times where I like the movie better.

message 3277: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Forbes (cornfed2316) | 25 comments just started the horribly depressing Flowers in the Attic Flowers in the Attic (Dollanganger, #1) by V.C. Andrews I want to read the whole series

message 3278: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Valerie, my mom just bought books 1-4 at Costco. She said she wanted to reread them. I don't think I have ever read them, so I will start when she finishes.

Over the weekend, I finished Goblet of Fire, started and finished Prisoner of Azkaban and started Chamber of Secrets. I am loving the whole read the series backwards thing.

I also like the fact that the first 2 books are smaller, because some of my giveaway wins came this weekend, and I really want to get started. :)

message 3279: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished "Handle with Care" by Jodi Picoult. I am now going to read Colors of Freedom by Michelle Isenhoff and 2 other of her books. I also need to continue with "Throne of Fire" by Rick Riordan

message 3280: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jennifer_b) I finished The Thirteenth Tale the other day. I loved the beginning and liked the end. The middle was just eh.

I just started The Handmaid's Tale, and I was assigned Daisy Miller for an American literature survey class.

message 3281: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nkb992) | 35 comments Jennifer, I just finished The Handmaid's Tale a few days ago and it was AMAZING. It's one of my new favorites. I hope you like it as much as I did!

message 3282: by Jennifer (last edited Jul 11, 2011 09:16PM) (new)

Jennifer (jennifer_b) That's really good to hear! I'm excited to read it. I looked for this book at four different libraries and finally found it at the fourth. I didn't think it would be a hard one to find, but I use small libraries.

message 3283: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Just finished An Abundance of Katherines by John Green and I really enjoyed it. It was funny and well written. I'm about to start Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) by Beth Revis .

message 3284: by Myriam (new)

Myriam Chevalier | 7 comments I just finished Shadowfever and The Road. I loved both of them, although they are VERY different. I just began reading Dead and Gone, The Gargoyle and The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection From the Living Dead.

What did you think of The Peach Keeper? I've been wanting to read that for some time.

message 3288: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Myriam, I love the Gargoyle. Just make sure you give it at least 4 or 5 chapters before giving up. I have some friends that I told that too, and it was the only reason they finished the book.

I am on the last Harry Potter, or the first, since I started with book 7. Then on to the giveaways that I have won that have started coming in.

message 3289: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I finally finished a book! I read Graham Greene's Our Man in Havana. It was really good and funny. I can't wait to read more by him.

message 3290: by Myriam (new)

Myriam Chevalier | 7 comments Tami, don't worry, I usually go through the whole book even if I don't get caught in the first chapters! Sometimes, I discover great books, like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I had a hard time going through the first half on the book, but it ended up being one of my favorite books ever.
Thanks for the tip, however! ^^

I only have about 20 more pages. It is good. I was expecting it to be a bit more sinister, but again, I haven't completely finished.

Will finish today and plan to start An African Affair: A Novel by Nina Darnton. The next in line in my wins I have received.

I finished Envy during lunch. It was good. Not near as predictable as ya usually is, and I enjoyed the differences of its characters than normal ya fare too.

Started An African Affair: A Novel but am only about 30 pages in.

Jennifer (jennifer_b) I've started Alias Grace. I still plan to read The Handmaid's Tale, but I'm gonna read Grace first. I've wanted to read both forever! I'm also reading The Yellow Wallpaper for class, just the short story. I'm pretty excited to write about it because I've read it several times. There's something about writing that makes me think on a deeper level; I really like that. I don't think like that if I don't have to write about a book.

I finished all my giveaways wins that I have received, so I started The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom last night. I am not that far into it, but so far I both like the book and hate a few characters and themes. :) Wierd!
