Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 59 comments I just finished Room. It was an interesting read, but I think I need to let it sink in a bit more before I make a real decision. Right now I think I'm going to re-read People of the Book.

message 3202: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nkb992) | 35 comments Myriam, I read Like Water for Chocolate for my Spanish class this past semester and really enjoyed it. Glad to hear you are too!

I just started reading Beach Blondes: June Dreams, July's Promise, August Magic. I chose it because I just wasn't feeling finishing Jane Eyre for a day out tanning. It's really, really good so far. I read 300 pages in one day! No small feat for me. It's definitely a quick beach read but it's very good.

message 3203: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments I just finished The Lost Crown: A Novel of Romanov Russia and I'm sad to say it wasn't for me. I think I could have gotten as much info about them from reading the wiki page. I couldn't connect to the sisters and as each chapter switched POV, I constantly had to remind myself who was 'I' this time.
I'm gonna start Die for Me in the next few minutes, I hope I'll like it better.

message 3204: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished Sisters Red and I'm now working on The Book Thief. Both were/are fantastic!

message 3205: by Jen (last edited Jun 06, 2011 09:24AM) (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments I started The Great Gatsby a couple days ago. I want to try to read more classics this summer.

Elizabeth, I LOVED The Book Thief!

message 3206: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Love love love The Book Thief!

message 3207: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
My mom is reading it right now. She keeps mentioning some things that I don't remember so I think it may be time for a reread.

message 3208: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments I just finished The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (Twilight, #3.5) by Stephenie Meyer and am now restarting Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins .

message 3209: by Rayna (new)

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 59 comments I just got back from the library with a bunch of new books to begin reading including The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Elegance of the Hedgehog.

You know how people say a behavior/addiction is a problem once you start hiding it from people? I think I've reached that point with books. I put them all in my room so my family wouldn't see how many books I picked up from the library today!

message 3210: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Rayna, but what a great addiction to have! It doesn't hurt you or anyone else!

message 3211: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments OMG Rayna I have the exact same problem! Except my family knows about it xD. I currently have 14 books from the library, with 4 more that I need to pick up xD.

message 3212: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments LOL! I'm the same way! I never tell anyone (well, except the members of this group) when I get another book in the mail or go to B&N and pick up another book or three.

message 3213: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Yeah! On top of the library books I've won 9 giveaway books in the past 2-3 weeks, so my mom isn't happy with how many books I have in my room xD.

message 3214: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
My mom just laughs, my sisters love it because they tend to borrow them A LOT, and even my brother and one of my aunts and one of my uncles. They aren't going to complain because it means free books for them.

message 3215: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Bahaha nice :D. Now that I think about it I'm actually going to be ordering 12 books from Books-A-Million soonish. Basically books I've been wanting for a while :D.

message 3216: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments My friend calls my book collection 'her own personal library'. She lives just two blocks away from me, so basically whenever she needs a new book, she comes over.

message 3217: by Rayna (new)

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 59 comments Yeah, I guess I should say that I hide them unsuccessfully. My family know and they mock accordingly (then borrow my books).

I almost bought People of the Book yesterday. Is it good enough to spend money on? lol
I've also been dying to read Room. I think that's what I will order on my Kindle after I finish [book:I Know This Much Is True

What did you think of the Elegance of the Hedgehog? I added this to my to-read list just because i like the cover. :p

message 3220: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments I finished Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins and have now restarted The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner .

message 3221: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (norse11) I finished Abandon (Abandon Trilogy #1) by Meg Cabot and started Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater .

How did you like Abandon? I'm dying to read it!

I just stopped reading Consequences of the Heart because I couldn't get into it and am now reading Awaken. I'm about 40 pages in and I'm really enjoying it so far :)

message 3223: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished Divergent and Steinbeck's Ghost and now I'm still working on The Book Thief and Marked.

Meg (aurawn) | 44 comments Elizabeth wrote: "I just finished Divergent and Steinbeck's Ghost and now I'm still working on The Book Thief and Marked."

I also just finished Divergent. I think it was my favorite of all of the YA dystopias I've read in the past few weeks (with Matched close behind that.)

Now I'm working on Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. I can't quite get into it.

Divergent is by far one of my favourite YA books that I have ever read.

message 3226: by laut (new)

laut | 12 comments I'm currently reading Bad Science and [Book:Nocturnes|4772110]. I lovelovelove Ishiguro's writing.. so wonderfully understated. Bad Science is more like a refresher course for me than anything, but it is turning out to at least be entertaining.

message 3227: by Knarik (last edited Jun 13, 2011 12:24AM) (new)

Knarik I just started Understanding Power: The Indispensable Chomsky
IS Divergent as good as Hunger Games??

message 3228: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Over the weekend I finished Sorta Like a Rock Star by Matthew Quick. It was a giveaway I kept entering and I am so glad I did. Great book. Finished my other giveaway, and started my HP reread and am taking Kimberly's suggestion and started with book 7 first.

Knarik wrote: "I just started Understanding Power: The Indispensable Chomsky

I haven't read the hunger games yet. But Divergent is amazing so if The Hunger Games is as good (or better) it will be double amazing.

Had to read the short story of this, Tim O'Brien right? I liked what I read of it and I heard the book is even better.

message 3231: by Mandie (new)

Mandie Bloom (adhrtkrn) I've been currently reading Something Borrowed for like two months! It's a great book but I was finishing up my last semester at Rutgers and getting caught up on hbogo.com watching all five seasons of Big Love lol. Now that I've finished the entire show, I'm flying through the book. Loving it, it's so well written and I actually laugh out loud sometimes. Can't wait to get done and go see the movie!

message 3232: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I just finished Bumped, which I really enjoyed. I've read a lot of dystopia lately that I didn't care for, this one was much more interesting. I'm still reading The Name of the Wind, but I'm really stressed at work and with my online class and I find it difficult to concentrate on a book that is as long as it is. So I'm now moving on to Divergent. I've heard so many good things about it, I'm excited to read it!

message 3233: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments Summer vacation has given me lots of time to read, so I've recently finished quite a few things.

Last week, I finished The Color Purple by Alice Walker, which was absolutely incredible. I was surprised at how thoroughly readable and enjoyable it was. It deals with some tough subjects, but it never loses its tenderness or hope. And it never feels trite or pedantic either. It's just a wonderful novel, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Last night I finished Her Smoke Rose Up Forever, which is an incredibly interesting short-story anthology. The writing was excellent, but there I would recommend reading the book a story at a time rather than all at once like I tried to do. It's a little too heavy for that. I'm not sure that I liked the ideas in all of these stories, but I have rarely read a collection of stories with such consistently excellent craftsmanship.

Just a few minutes ago I finished Like Water for Chocolate. I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I loved the writing style and the magical realism. I also loved the way the recipes were incorporated right into the story. I'm not really sure I like some of the things that happened in the book. Some of the events and attitudes didn't really sit well with me. But other than that uncomfortableness, I'd say it's a fun and well written book, especially if you like folk tales, food, and true love.

Up next, I'm going to be reading The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, The Virgin in the Garden by A.S. Byatt, and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. I'm also looking forward to reading Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism with the feminist reading group I co-moderate.

message 3234: by Natanya (new)

Natanya (vraisemble) | 255 comments I finished The Help last week, which I'll be reviewing for the group blog, and I'm currently reading Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and The Blind Assassin...aka books by my FAVORITEE authors. :D

message 3235: by AB (new)

AB (a-knee-bee) I'm starting Dry Ice this week. I'll be on vacation with friends, so I won't be able to read as much as I usually do (I get the feeling my host would be disappointed if I disappeared for a few hours to read...) but I'm really looking forwards to it, as it was my second GR giveaway that I won... and the first that I actually received.

message 3236: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I just finished Like Water for Chocolate. I'm really conflicted about it. The writing style was good, but there were so many plot elements and ideas in it that I really didn't like. Here's my review, which goes into more detail. Overall, I have to say that I was really disappointed.

Omg! really? that is so cool! I would love to meet him.

message 3241: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I am almost done with "Change of Heart" by Jodi Picoult. After that I will continue reading "Handle with Care" also by Jodi Picoult. After that I will continue with The Throne of Fire by Rick Riordan.

I am waiting on some books that are by Michelle Isenhoff. When they arrive I will read and review those books for Michelle.

message 3242: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nkb992) | 35 comments I just finished Jane Eyre which I really enjoyed. I'm still reading Beach Blondes: June Dreams, July's Promise, August Magic and hopefully will start rereading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in the next couple of days.

I read that earlier this year. It's very long, but it's not too hard to read. It took a little while, but it was always enjoyable to read.

I've been wanting to read that. You'll have to let me know what you think!

message 3246: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments Read the first two chapters and so far, so good. I will definitely let you know Kimberly...probably in three months or so since this won't be a quick read! :)

message 3247: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Forbes (cornfed2316) | 25 comments going to start reading the whole Wrinkle in Time series, should take me five days, five books, one a day...and am continuing The Mortal Instruments series with book two City of Ashes

message 3248: by Kimberly (last edited Jun 20, 2011 11:05AM) (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Valerie, whatever you do, do NOT get the audiobook version of A Wrinkle in Time. It's terrible.

I just finished Divergent, which I really enjoyed. Now I'm reading The Book Thief for the second time. Love this book so much!

message 3249: by Annie (new)

Annie Hartman (anniebananie) | 242 comments Currently reading I Know This Much Is True and am really enjoying it! I was intimidated by its length but for the amount of time I DON'T have this summer, I have gotten through it rather quickly! I am also reading When Ghosts Speak: Understanding the World of Earthbound Spirits which is also extremely interesting for anyone who believes in or has had a spiritual encounter. The author is the woman the TV series 'Ghost Whisperer' with Jennifer Love Hewitt, was based on.

message 3250: by Annie (new)

Annie Hartman (anniebananie) | 242 comments My boyfriend just bought a book on the secrets of the Knights Templar and I am BEGGING him to hurry and read it! It sounds so interesting!
